Analyst: Sony has "most to lose" this generation

DFC Intelligence has been chatting to Gamasutra about PlayStation's prospects this hardware generation, and like the filthy hounds of controversy we are, we've been listening in.

The group's President and Senior Technology Analyst Wanda Meloni thinks Sony is unlikely to make all its money back on the PlayStation 3, citing high production costs per unit as a primary factor.

"Sony has the most to lose with this current generation," Meloni declared.

Despite being couched in the rhetoric of doom and gloom, the rest of the analyst's predictions are slightly more upbeat. DFS thinks Sony's 67 per cent home format market share with the PlayStation 2 will shrink to 40-50 per cent by the end of PS3's lifetime (presumably they're taking into consideration both PS2 and PS3). Not a terrible situation to be in, even if you're losing money on each unit produced.

IMO, I can't say that I agree with the analyst as for that Sony has the most to lose this gen. I thin developing the cell was a daunting task and Sony knew this going into R&D the thing. However what most didn't expect was the economy to fall through the tank and that to me has played a bigger role in the situation. The plus side of all this is that Sony doesn't have to do much, if any R&D for the next system other than maybe what gpu to go with and how much more ram to put in it. my 2...

sony have lost already, did anyone see the profit/loss accounts released today ???????????? That will teach them to faff about when a few simple changes could have shot the ps3 into orbit, instead they waited and waited and now there in the middle of a m$ and nintendo s.ex sandwich and there taking dp

Sony is stepping up there game right now with some sweet exclusives but as for the future who knows.....Id like for Sony to spread out there exclusives more there going to be like MS after Killzone 2 comes out (a video game drout)

I'm so glad I got rid of my delaystaton3. It' really sad and pathetic watching sony fail this generation but there's just no way they can keep up with xbox or the wii due to prices. The xbox specializes to the hardcore while the wii specializes to the casual gamer. The delaystation3 doesn't really specialize in anything. Bye Bye Sony.

This is all fooey ... PS3 will be console king ... but like all good things a little patience is required before we see it reach full throttle ... people make ridiculously premature comments about its success but probably don't understand the underlying architecture or where sony are trying to take it.

MS have done a good job in blinding people with fat brown envelopes to 3rd party devs.  Despite this, PS3 is now more likely to be a lead platform for x-over titles now and as soon as MS slip up, Sony will sucker-punch them.  Don't forget these guys have been in this game for a long time ... MS are too predictable ... and play dirty ... Sony are a coiled cobra ... waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

@6 ... you fool ... you obviously bought all the wrong titles if you can't see that PS3 is the better choice!!!

    This analyst says:

"Sony has the most to lose with this current generation,"

Effing Einstein. Of course they have the most to loose this gen. '

Previously there was nothing else than Playstation2. Sony owned the whole F****ing market.

Being in the top and staying in the top are two different things and staying in the top is more difficult that making your way up there.

So if Sony had lost just a fragment of the market they had previously, they would still loose the most of all since nintendo and xbox had nothing to loose in the previous gen.

Gods, do you actually have to study and become an analyst to predict the obvious?

I am happy the way things came this Gen. There are enough games for me to play and competition between these companies can only result in better things for us.

@ SOLWAY Quit being a hater. Do you think M$ or Nintendo could've launched with a system at $599.99 and survived half as long as Sony has, yup you guessed it, uuum... NO! @ Ryan I highly doubt you ever owned a PS3, talking like that. Since your Xbox is sooooo “hardcore” then go to an Xbox site and discuss it there. Other than that quit trolling as the PS3 has the best games out AND coming out.

    Slow clap for Wanda Melonhead!

Feck me, these analysts are geniuses, aren't they?! Totally agree with MjW - it doesn't take much to predict that the market leader for the previous 2 generations, the company with the largest market share, has the most to lose.

Same applies regarding the costs. Sony are the only one of the 3 companies that bothered to put any real R&D time for this generation. Nintendo basically went with the same hardware as the Gamecube, and Microsoft... well, they used PC components and crammed them into an inadequately ventilated box, and spent practically zero time testing for faults and reliability. So yes, of course Sony spent more money on development - since they actually developed something.

What's your number, Wanda? I'll give you a ring next time I need the obvious stating.

well said. it seems that i've read this "article" at least 15 times this year. some hotshot analyst "predicts" sony has everything to lose, and is paid big bucks to state the obvious. i don't know what is more annoying: analysts repeating the same bull or websites publishing it.....

sony are making a massive investment that`s all.the cell and blu ray is all brand new.the ps4 will be using the cell so will tv`s etc etc, so the cell is ere to stay, bluray is just taking off in pc`s nowand is ere to stay.sony just brought out very modern tech and thats expensive but its all ere to stay which is way i dont understand why devs say its too hard or lazy to make games for the ps3.all pc`s r going multicore and using bluray now so they gotta get use to it at some point.     @6 oh yeh cause still using dvds and no hdd is real hard core hahaha.hard core on ur wallet for all the times u gotta fix the rrod and pay to play online mugs, while ps3 owners are playing away for free.

I owned a 360 and it died on me 3 times in less than 3 years I sold it and got a PS3 and I love it! I think Sony has created a great console but will lose money this time around because they put a lot more effort than what I think was needed into the PS3. Still though what I learned by researching sony's previous consoles is that they are always looking to the future by creating consoles that last and adding things that may seem unnesscesary now but are vital to the survival of their brand in video games and the future of the industry!

WTF man? is THIS what counts as gaming new now a days? I'm not faulting PSU they're just delivering what other people have said but do we seriously need to hear the most obvious crap stated aloud? The PS2 decimated, DECIMATED everyone that challanged it last generation, how could they NOT have the most to potentially lose in a new generation?! WHO DOSEN'T UNDERSTAND THAT???
