Analyst predicts PS3 price cut, again

A Lazard Capital Markets analyst says given Sony's recent financial statements, we are likely to see a price cut for the PlayStation 3 in the near future. The "significant price cut," in the range of $100, could come sometime between E3 and the end of the summer, says analyst Colin Sebastian.

Sebastian says that as Sony is able to reduce PS3 costs, and as it projects a 30 percent increase in sales for fiscal year 2010, this summer is likely the best time for a price cut. The next 12 months are crucial for Sony to retain market share, especially with Nintendo losing ground, and Microsoft likely introducing a "gesture-based user interface," he says.

The standard 80GB PS3 retails for $399 and is currently the most expensive console. It is still one of the most affordable Blu-ray players, however.

I bought my PS3 the first day it was released in the US. I was lucky to get myself on a pre order list...and it was $600 before tax, plus a game. Blah...it's all good though. I don't regret it. Go Sony!!

     @-Raven

Same here I remember after taxes it was like 700+ dollars, but completely worth it. Later on I upgraded the 60gb hd to 320gb and it's only gotten better.

Yeah I hear ya! Plus I forgot to mention that I bought the extended warranty for an additional $65 or something. It was pretty crazy...but the feeling of having something that everyone else wanted but couldn't have was priceless!!!

i payed more than £550 for mine at launch, which was $1100+ at the time. Seems a lot but it was totally worth it, haven't regretted it for one minute.

And if they release this slim model i will buy that day one too. Looks smexy

They have said this every year since the PS3 launched....why dont all these so called 'analysts' just shhhh and wait for sony to release a statement, or cut the price themselves.

what on earth are they waiting for ?
the profitability is probably sky high at the moment and will remain so even with a price cut. Reducing the price is only going to create far more revenue.

I like how analysts constantly "predict" events that are inevitable.  Guess hat, consoles always drop in price after they've been out for a while.  I could post on my blog once a month for a year saying "this is when the PS3 will have a price cut" too.  I'm bound to be right sooner than later.

299.99 i could almost get a 2nd system  but, i would rather keep my ps3 60 gb.mine is worth the price i bought it for, i bought it in 2007 ,november . i love MGS 4 and it's the reason i bought a ps3, and i also have a fugly 360.  it's not wrong to want to have more than one console, just not a wii!!!!!!

@1 i dont regret it either but geese could they cut the price here in australia i dont think its gone down since i got mine altho i spose 1 yr mightnt bring a price cut, and i would recomend one before christmas time for well kind of obvious reasons and in japan do like  a not small one before final fantasy 13 release, and maybe before gt5 release in rest of world

Apparently you can preidct stuff all the time, always be wrong and still have a job. Sounds easy.

i started thinking about this from a business stand point and if sony cuts the ps3 price, it will be cheaper than most of their stand alone blu-ray players...it would help ps3 sales but its gonna steal some of their market share in other areas

probably not going to happen but...

I think a $50 drop would be generous.  I'd personally pay another $400 for another PS3 but I don't need another one right now.

I'm sure this won't happen. Ah well, I paid $500 exactly for my 80gb Motorstorm bundle (Wal-Mart discount card) and I loved it even back when the games weren't that great.

I would love to see more people get Playstations and a price cut, but it ain't happening.

    @ 17

But maybe  they get lousy pay, so cant afford a PS3 ... so they do this "predict price cuts" to try provoke  public outcry which will then pressure the supplier into lowering the price  ?

Hmmm so here goes ...... From my analysis I predict  90% price cuts for Audi R8's (pllllllease) !

People want blue-ray but movies are expensive than HD DVDs, so they jusy stick with ordinary DVD players

No way give this bloke a medal, he really must earn every penny he makes with predictions like this.

Its not a case of if, its a case of when! Its a consumer electrical product, and as with all consumer goods in this catagory they ALL eventually drop in price, so why the specualtion of "will it happen"?

And yeah $100 or £70 is about right, im predicting the UK price will be £229.99

I'm glad I bought my PS3 at launch date, especially when Since the 60gb launch PS3 has everything, 4 USB slots, memory card reader and it plays almost every PS1 & PS2 GAMES, but they do need to do a price cut. I have so many friends who are sick & tired of there 360 breaking down that they want to buy a  PS3, but cant see themself spending that much money with the economy the way it is right now.

If I could afford a PS3, I'd definitely buy one. As it is, most of the games I want to play are cross platform. If the price was £200, I'd buy one today.

I predict a price cut too... considering there hasn't been one in a year and would be a good time to introduce it considering all the heavy exclusives coming our way more people may pay Attention to the PS3
