Ben Heck continues to impress

Posted on April 11th, 2008 at 14:14 EDT

While some of us may have spent the last year and a half gaming, getting an education, working a dull 9-5 job or even just relaxing unemployed, Ben Heck was spending his off-and-on time developing one of the greatest console modifications known to man.  You may recognize his name from his past creations that do involve a laptop created from the XBOX 360 and the Nintendo Wii; so it shouldn't come as any shock to know that he's been working hard on delivering to the world a portable version of our beloved PlayStation 3.

That's right, Heck has finally delivered with his polished version of the PlayStation 3 Laptop Edition.  We've included a photo of this modification below for you to enjoy:

The official specs for the laptop are as follows:

  • Original backwards compatible 60GB model
  • 17-inch LCD HDTV screen: 720p
  • HDMI-DVI connection (same as last Xbox 360 laptop)
  • Built-in keyboard, USB ports, stereo speakers, headphone jack
  • Size: 17 x 13.75 x 3-inches
  • Weight: 16 pounds

We're well aware that you're probably looking to get your hands on this bad boy and fortunately, if you're willing to pay a hefty price for it, you can. The laptop will be auctioned off on eBay for charity and we'll let you know when the auction becomes available.  Until then, we can't wait to see what else Ben Heck has in store for the gaming world.

Clever as it may be, it looks... tacky. I wouldn't want it.

Being as old as I am, I remember when Commodore released a 'portable' C64. It was in a big box with a handle on it, and a review said it was "more 'luggable' than portable." Same applies here, I reckon!

That thing is way too big, but it would be cool to see him design a slim PS3.

That "portable" PS3 laptop is 16 pounds and it weighs more than the non-portable PS3 right now.

If I had money for it, I'd totally buy it. I dont care what anybody else thinks, I'd love to play my PS3 at school.

Say what you want... but I bet 99% of us here couldn't even attempt to build something like that.  Very creative!

Its certainly a bit big and bulky, but I'd still love to have a portable PS3 I could take on the road with me. Ultra Cool!!!!

I also think it is sexy as heII Sure, it's big, but it's pretty darn small for a PS3 + keyboard + battery + 17 inch HDTV + stereo speakers. Actually, it's even small for just a PS3. I'm actually impressed. Is it heavy? Sure, but it's not like you hold it in the air while you're using it.  It's just going to be sitting on your lap or on a table. I'm not uncomfortable with a person in my lap so I think I'd survive with 16 lbs. There aren't a whole lot of people that would really need this, but I can think of people who would. This would be really sweet on a plane. Now if only it had a wireless broadband card so you could play online anywhere in the world.

Awesome. I like how it looks, doesn't look as sleek as the PS3, but I like the quirkiness.

Despite of what some of you think I personally think this would be cool to take to work or if your away on business or even if you were a college student PS3 is like the ultimate media hub from movies, music, pictures, OS Linux. The keyword here is that it's portable.

A 16 pound laptop? AYFKM? I agree the heat from that would burn a hole through a human body.... Also I notice he lost a USB port, by adding the keyboard presumably, But cant you just add a hub or a pssthrough port to keep it?

This would be very awesome to have. It saves you money from going out and buying an HD tv for your ps3, and it has a built in keyboard so you dont have to go out and buy one. Wish they sold these at stores!
