Pete Hines, Bethesda’s Vice President of Marketing, has revealed that the upcoming post-apocalyptic outing Fallout 3 will feature a smaller game world than that of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
Speaking to Australian website Gameplayer, Hines commented, "The world is much smaller than Oblivion, but packed with stuff to do. We've never bothered to walk across the world, but it's between 50 to 80 per cent of the size of Oblivion.”
"One thing we did well in Oblivion was the relative distance between you and things to do in the world. Drop a ball on the map and there's stuff to do within a certain distance. A world of endless space and meaningless walking is just not fun."
Fallout 3 takes place in a post-apocalyptic United States, ravaged by the onslaught of nuclear war. Players are cast in the shoes of a survivor living in the relative safety of Vault 101; a fallout shelter representing Washington D.C.
According to the developers, the game will feature a main quest of 20 hours long, with additional gameplay hours unlocked by completing various side quests and other miscellaneous tasks.
Fallout 3 is due out on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC later this year.

This info was in OPM (UK) about 3 months ago!
it's true that walking hour's on end with nothing to do isn't exciting but having great towns to explore more interresting and realistic, even if you do often get lost, 50% of oblivion seems a bit too small to me, hope it's more like 80% than i'll be happy with the free roaming place
Poor old news. lol
They should make it bigger with all the money made off Oblivion.
I cant wiat for this game!!!
This game excites me...
even if it's between 50 - 80% that is still pretty damn big. can't wait to play this game.
So by september then? I am kinda out of the loop as far as this game is concerned. My guess on the physical size of the plain it would be around perhaps 67per cent of that of Oblivian if thats what they deduced.
that's awful. half the fun in FO 1 and 2 was getting ambushed treking the wastes. BOOOO. bring Interplay back! lol
Yeah, I think psu had info on this same topic along time ago
very smart. I hate walking miles to do stuff. I'm looking at you FF12.
I seriously want this
Thats fine with me, Oblivion had a lot of open space with nothing in it what so ever.
YES IT IS FUN!!! THAT WAS THE GREATEST PART OF OBLIVION GETTING LOST!!! iit wasnt even BIG anuff!!! wtf wtf wtf!!!!
the beauty it simplistic like reality is what drew me in.. so your going to cram a buncha crap in a tiny area?? ooookkkkk
art is being lost to the lazy that are afriad to experiance somthing realistic/beautiful/ and creativly spritual
FU ( K modernvideo game desigh... im sick of it... EVERONES NEW FEAR IS FU**ING DIFICULTY AND ARTISTIC FREEDOM......
thats why i cant WAIT to change the world of how you all experiance videogames and the true essesnce and beauty of art
hehe and im doing that with "little" games you will later no as "**Destiny**" ,"The Suit", "String", "Vincent Veemer", "Deep Grass" and "Claus"
just wait ha... as you can tell im sick of videogames just being considered videogames
psn id: gingo.... i doubt any game will come close to the sheer size and magnitude of oblivion it is MASSIVE and that is one of the reasons why i dont like it, its just far too big
its not the size but how you use it lol :P but really oblivion was humongous i played the game through like 5 times and its just ridiculous how big it is...as long as theyre actually using all the space is what matters
good. i would rather have a smaller world with more interesting theme rather than a big world with a cliche' medieval one.
