BioShock Eyes-on

2K Games had an impressive media room setup with bright lights, modern furniture, free Red Bull, and a preview look into the world of Rapture on the PlayStation 3. While the Red Bull was more than enough to impress me after an exhausting day, what I was preparing to see was nothing short of extravagant. Taking the stage for 2K Games was Melissa, one of the Senior Producers for BioShock, who was going to walk us through some of the exclusive content coming to the PS3 iteration of the title.

I’d like to first mention that I did own and beat BioShock on the 360 almost a year ago, so I feel as though I am educated enough on the game to form the opinions that I have. One of the very first things you’ll notice within BioShock is that all anti-aliasing issues are now gone. There were absolutely no edging issues or jaggedness to any portions of what was displayed on screen for us in the room. If I’m being bluntly honest, the game looks exponentially better on the PlayStation 3 than it does on the 360. I understand it has a year of wiggle room to have made the adjustments, but I almost felt like I was staring at a redesigned title. The fiery blaze at the start of the game just felt more realistic and truly gave off the impression of a fuel-engaged fire over the top of the ocean.

As for the details while moving within the city of Rapture, they’re greatly improved as well. I couldn’t believe my own eyes at the clarity and crispness that BioShock on the PS3 was displaying on screen. I think the 360 version looked absolutely spectacular, but this version almost makes the 360’s version look a tad underachieving. Do not take this as an opportunity to flame, as an extra year in development can and will make differences like that.

Moving onto the new content, small 'mini-levels' manifest themselves outside of the game's story. They don't serve any true purpose other than to add a bit more playability to the game, however they are a nice touch in the already award-winning title. The idea of these mini-levels is to meet certain objectives like saving little sisters. In the demo provided, a little sister was trapped atop of a broken Ferris Wheel. In order to save her, you had to find ways of producing electricity in order to cause the wheel to rotate and bring her down to safety.

There are several ways to go about the challenges and each one is a tad more difficult than the one before it, but the puzzle aspect of it certainly adds to the experience. Also, there is a mini-carnival section within this portion of the game that is filled with carnival games. Each game is interactive and will reward you for playing them. Of course, beating these carni-games are a cinch in comparison to their real-life counterparts that are nothing but full of shenanigans.

Overall though, BioShock on the PS3 is looking to be a completely stunning title that will warrant a purchase from people like myself, those who have already completed the title on a different platform. 2K Games has done a marvelous job in bringing together a team of worthy studios and improving an already astounding title.

Hmm. I have it for the PC and wonder if I'll see a difference if I get it on my PS3. I run it pretty much at full, with the ocassional frame drop but nothing too bad. I'm assuming the PS3 ver will have a solid frame rate?

lol, exactly as I thought, stupid "mini levels" that dont add anything to the main plot, more like a mini game to justify buying this one-year-too-late title at the same price. F**k 2k, learn to not take moneyhat from MS and release content on same day b*tches.

um wat is bioshock actually ABOUT?, wats the story?....or doesant it have one?...

  26. Stickemup

    • 1:37pm BST - July 22nd, 2008

2k games just said that they are striving to make Bioshock on the PS3 look on par with the 360 version.

"We're looking to match the quality of the original version. We want to make sure that the water is just as great, and I think you can see from the demonstration, that it looks no different from the 360 version."

This was said at their E3 presentation.

    Dave I think you're lying!

  27. Dave

    • 2:28pm BST - July 22nd, 2008

What did I lie about? What do you want them to say? "We're looking to make it better than the 360 release!" ? Seriously? They're not going to say something like that. I have the entire audio recorded from the BioShock eyes-on, lol. The moment the game turns on, you can hear me say "wow", lol. Why? Because it DOES look better, IMO.

To further elaborate...How many companies do you see say things like "The 360 version looks better than the PS3 version!" ? None? Maybe Rockstar on GTAIV (PS3 better than 360). anybody else? Not really. They're not going to downplay their product on another console regardless of when it came out. It's just business and how that operates.

Did you see EA come out and say The Orange Box was ported poorly to the PS3 before release? Lol No. I've played both games, I loved it on the 360, but the PS3 version honestly does look crisper. I wasn't the only one who felt this way. A couple of journalist around me agreed as well when I was talking with them about it.

    • 3:24pm BST - July 22nd, 2008

What's with the PSU staff being so defensive?  He was just pointing out an official statement given by 2k reps.  Honestly, I don't think this issue matters, whether this game looks better than the 360 version or not, because the 360 version looked great!  Anyways, I would imagine that if a company was bringing out a port a whole year later, they WOULD want to advertise this version as the BIGGER, BETTER version because it would make previous buyers look into repurchasing the product.  So why WOULDN'T they advertise this as the better looking game?

  29. Dave

    • 3:55pm BST - July 22nd, 2008

Because they're not selling it to the same market. They're not trying to get people to "repurchase" it. This is aimed towards PS3 owners, not 360 owners and very few of those are multi-console owners. Thus it makes no sense and would make it look like "We gave you an inferior product 360 owners...PS3 owners rejoice."

    That is bad business.

  30. Stickemup

    • 4:02pm BST - July 22nd, 2008

@Dave - I didn't mean to sound like I really thought you were lying. I was kidding of course, but I dunno if I came across like it. If I did, I apologize.

Is it really that much better looking though? Because to me, a "Wow" means, it's expontentially better. I don't think people give wows when they see anti aliasing problems resolved, so I'm guessing it is THAT much better looking.

  31. Girugamesh | Shidousha

    • 4:38pm BST - July 22nd, 2008

    @Stickemup

The point may be that the "wow" was because it was so much better looking than he had originally thought.

Like you said, the 2k developers said it would be the same, so no one was expecting something this much better on the PS3.

That's where the "wow" came from. It was a surprise that it looked that much better.

  32. Dave

    • 5:50pm BST - July 22nd, 2008

Giru has it right. I went in expecting to see what I saw on the 360, but the improvements they made visually like fixing the anti-aliasing threw me for a loop. I didn't expect it at all and it honestly made everything look a lot more polished and refined.

  33. DTurkin

    • 7:53pm BST - July 22nd, 2008

The problem, Dave, is that you wrote "If I’m being bluntly honest, the game looks exponentially better on the PlayStation 3 than it does on the 360." Now I don't want to get all mathematical, but exponentially better implies a HUGE improvement. Even reading between the lines, the 2k developers said the graphics would be the same as on the Xbox360, therefore I am more prepared to think that the graphics are only a little bit better.

Bioshock PS3 FTW. Played it and beat it twice on 360, but I might just dive back into Rapture for the PS3!

  35. Dave

    • 8:28pm BST - July 22nd, 2008

DTurk, just wait until you actually see it in person in HD. Not on GT or IGN, etc...but live in person, so you can make a true comparison.

this was probably the only game I really wanted to try from 360 camp and I will buy it on day one, never played it so it's so brand new to me lol, but this game really killed the awards last year, and I this after a year of being out it would look a year better than the 360 version, that just sounds like common sense.
