As the latest Electronic Gaming Montly hits subscribers, details on the upcoming PS3 exclusive Killzone 2 are leaking onto the net. A few facts include Guerrilla's use of the Cell processor as well as background updates on a few of the returning characters from the Killzone universe.
According to the 12 page preview in EGM, Killzone 2 will be utilizing a whopping four and a half of the six cores in the Cell processor. For technically a first generation title (it's Guerrilla's first PS3 game), that's quite remarkable.

“Sony basically has an international forum for sharing character technology, animation tools and graphics shaders." said Guerrilla Games’ Technical Directer Michiel van der Leeuw. "We’ve even taken a few tricks directly from the Resistance guys at Insomniac, and we’ve even been talking directly to the God of War guys in Santa Monica."
Other details from the magazine preview:
- There will be more than just the Arc Cannon when it comes to Helgast weather-controlling weapons
- Don't expect all the levels to appear the same, some levels will highlight the "natural beauty" of Helghan
- Templar is now a Colonel and commands a Cruiser called New Sun

I'm not usually the one to scream 'old', but this is about 4 days late.
Anyways, I can't wait for more info on this game. Hopefully we'll see a new level at E3.

@MAX PAYNE
Actually, they talk about it in nearly every interview. They said that they've made the AI quite impressive.

this will not be another haze....and 4.5 cores means its almost out of processing room....I believe you can only use 5 out of six at 1 time.....

O M G This game will be stunning, probably the most technically and graphically stunning FPS there is. Seriously, GG's first game uses 4 out of 6 of the Cell processors.. I seriously can't wait for this game.

no you can use six cores out of 8 (1 of them is a failsafe and another is reserved for the OS) its technically using 75% power then but its probably less than that because theres more optimation techniques to be discovered im sure

This game will be tight! 4.5 cores is a huge start for a dev companys first PS3 title. I can't wait and see, what utilizing all 6 cores will do! Whats even cooler, is that KZII will be using only 40-50% of the PS3s power. Too bad that they can't use the other 2 cores on the cell chip. PSN ID-Demented007

@tanner1
The PS3 has sixth SPE (Synergestic Processing Elements) and one PPE (Power Processing Element). There is a seventh SPE which is dedicated to security and the operativ system (XMB). There is also the last and eight SPE which is disabled and cannot be used by anything (due to production yields).

I love how sharp and clean the game looks already, with a smooth framerate to boot. They just need to sort out those little loading hitches when moving through to the next area.

Ok guys, KZII will not be like Haze. Remember, Haze was published by Ubisoft, made by Free Radical. For one, Ubisoft sucks, especially when it comes to PS3. Ubisoft is in love with MS! Free Radical was only funded so much $ to make it, and it sucked. Sony is funding KZII, with a $60m mark, with 4yrs+ development behind it, BIG DIFFERENCE!!!! PSN ID-Demented007

This just makes me want this game more and more. Only Sony's developers can better utilise the ps3 at the moment. I really don't believe Kojima san utilised the ps3 to its maximum as he claims for MGS4. I am glad the KZ2 is looking awesome even though it utilises only 4.5 of the cell's processors. I wonder how the game would look like if they utilised all these processors...Well hope the other developers will learn from this.
Free Radical is preparing Time Splitters 4. I know they have learnt from their mistakes with Haze and will make TS4 a memorable game

Now that BOTH Insomniac[Ratchet&Clank, Resistance]AND Santa Monica[God Of War]are helping Guerilla wth Killzone II, I do not see it failing now. Not a chance, this game WILL live up to expectations people mark my words on it!!!!!!

I knew they were talking to Insomniac but I didn't think they'd be talking to Santa Monica. I had my doubts after playing the first, but with 2 of the best PS3 devs out there helping, I don't see how this could fail. Looks amazing every time I see it.
Nice to see Templar back as well.
