Capcom: PS3 has reached "full swing"

Legendary Japanese publisher Capcom thinks the PlayStation 3 is starting to realise its market potential. In a conference call held for the firm's Q1 financial results, Capcom commented that the success of certain landmark PS3 exclusives together with Sony's current pricing strategy boded well for the future.

"We believe that PS3 has finally reached full swing after looking at the success of Metal Gear Solid 4, as well as future large-scale title line-ups," reads the transcript.

"In addition, some reduction in the PS3's price was announced at the 2008 E3, and we can expect its spread to increase by next March when our Resident Evil 5 for PS3 will be released."

Capcom isn't planning on abandoning the PS3's competitors anytime soon, though. "As we are not only focusing on PS3, we would also like to spread our supply of software evenly between Wii and Xbox 360 while their markets in the world increase in a similar manner to PS3."

PS3 was out last, and it's amazing that he can say they'll spread their software out evenly between the Wii and 360 while their markets in the world increase in a similar manner to PS3

So basically there saying "We were to chicken to support the company that made us money in the past earlier on cause Sony's #'s was too low, further more money is more important to us than commitment and loyalty".....

    @2 Yes that's rather profound

@3 It's called risk analysis.  You can't start throwing millioins into projects when you don't have any install base.  PS3 is a very different console from what developers have been used to and that is inherently risky.

@4 Risk analysys???? Its hardly as if they would be taking a gamble is it, its not as if Sony Playstation is an unknown brand, an unknown quantity! It is purely down to the fact that they would make more money (at present) from 360's etc.

They effectivly are just waiting till they deem the PS3 market large enough to warrant the dev costs, they dont give a toss about the brand or loyallty, its a business and its all down to money FULL STOP

They'd better do the next Devil May Cry game justice compared to that last piece of trash or I'm done giving Capcom my money.

Devil May Cry 1 and 3 were great while 2 sucked and 4 was average. Well I havent heard anything from Capcom about another Onimusha, that series never let me down.

@ richkaos.  It is all about the money but at the same time any change in strategy is a risk including supporting a platform that is new.  Especially when you take into account all the scare-mongering that was hitting the press at the time of launch, the PR blunders, the delays, the high price point .. surely you haven't forgotten already.  I'm sure that they woud have taken the dev costs on the chin if they saw the PS3 being a safe bet.  They deemed this to be a risk until the PS3 (the console, not the brand) had sufficient momentum to mitigate losses.

Jigglespsu is right. I've never played a resident evil game before (!), but this new one looks pretty good :)

I would not say it's in "full swing" quite yet. Not in game development anyways. Yes, maybe in the business aspect.

The PS3 will be in "full swing" when developers become more familiar with the machine and begin utilising the full potential of the hardware. For example, Killzone 2, from what I gather only uses 6 of the machines 8 "cores".

It reminds me of the Playstation 2. Look at the early titles of the PS2 and they look pants. Look at the latest generation of PS2 games and they look amazing when you compare them (I'm a PS2 owner aswell). I suspect the same will happen with the Playstation 3.

I think the PS3 still hasn't reached it's full swing. Give it another 8-10 months. Killzone will show the PS3 full swing.

psn id: gingo.... it was only a matter of time of time before developers start realising that the ps3 is catching up rapidly and they start concentrating more on it

just wish more developers were loyal like Konami (kojima), i hope MGS4 never sees the light of day on the 360 and i hope more and more developers stay loyal.  Especially after rumours of KH3 exclusive to PS3, and some sort of Rockstar exclusive, ppl assuming its Red Dead Revolver 2.

k well if they deliever quality we can stop saying "crapcom" finally... But, RE5 will own, though i think that Gears style is a FAIL.

What capcom is trying to say is. We were waiting for a AAA hig quality game to push the PS3 like METAL GEAR 4, and we didn't want to take the risk with our non AAA non hig quality exclusives.

@jigglespsu - I agree with your comment, from a financial and business point of view it makes sense. If I was running Capcom I wouldn't want to go Bankrupt from loss of sales because a system didn't have the install base to support and make money from the develpment of the game. My comment more reflect relationship in the past and now. This will be water under the bridge nexted year as Sony continues to build however I do Digress , " commitment and loyalty" has a powerfull effect as well. Some balance needs to be achived I believe.

Man, I really, REALLY hate this company. As far as I'm concerned, they're neck & neck with EA.
