Codemasters: Fuel's world could fill four Blu-ray discs

While claims that the Xbox 360's DVD format is too small are becoming commonplace, you rarely hear of a developer pushing the boundaries of Blu-ray.
And yet Codemasters is doing exactly that. Apparently the publisher's upcoming Fuel - an open-world racer redolent of Mad Max - would exhaust four Blu-ray discs if it were created using "traditional" methods. That's according to Executive Producer David Brickley, speaking to Videogamer.com
"In the context of that map, which is one small corner of it, when the guys showed us this technology, if you were to build it in a traditional manner it would fill about four Blu-rays," he said. "A gargantuan amount of data, just enormous. The challenge for us was to say can we come up with a race experience generated according to an algorithmic rule set, procedural generation, which is of a standard that is indistinguishable from one that's been done by hand?"
To put the figure in context, Brickley likened the world of Fuel to that of Burnout Paradise. "I did a little Power Point internally to do it and it zoomed them in to each other," he said. "It's like a little postage stamp because I think it does like four kilometres or something." Fuel is reported to be 5,000 miles in scope.
The game is being developed by Asobo, and is due out on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC in Q2 2009. It sounds, uh, big.

@JD-82
Since the maximum usable space is 7.5 gigs for a 360 DL-DVD try about 3 dvds per blu ray so it might be more like 12 DVDs.
@gingo
The are saying that it could have been 4 blu rays. It's not going to because they are looking to procedural generation that conforms to thier original intent and vision. Which will make the game MUCH MUCH smaller as assets would be replaced by code.

....also, could you imagine the cost it would be to ship a 4-bluray disc game, it will never happen. And seeing that its coming to Xbox, I dont think that it will be big enough.

What does he mean by Traditional Methods? This seems like a VERY broad term he's using
4 Blu-Ray Disc?
How's this suppose to magically fit into a measly 8 gigs of space for the 360?
This is just terrible PR here

im sorry but i call bluff...unless its fully uncompressed but even then has this game been in development long enough to flush out that much space to make driving that many miles worth looking at and mantaining somthing enjoyable or are we talking about mile after mile of nothing but sand and trees..i still dont buy it

@Solid_Squirrel
Assets. Solid, artist created geometry and textures. Procedural generation is not magic. It just eshews assets for code. Code take up less space.
@tanner1
List the PS3 games currently pressed on 50 gig discs. Then you will understand why people are assuming they are talking about 25 gig disc. And the DRM on the DL DVD's for the 360 takes up 1.5 gigs.

He's just tossing up random things trying to generate more expectation to his product. He's mentioning completely irrelevante early development barriers, as it seems, already solved, that's just going to create rumours. And that's exactly what any PR would wish for an under-develoment product.

This sounds like a gimmick to hype a game that sounds uninteresting. Racing on 4 Blurays? Why? If it were a third person run and gun with driving in it I could see it taking up more space but racing? I like racing as much as the next guy but I would think it would start getting boring.

Got a feeling this is garbage information, "using traditional methods" ? So like, if we dont ever compress any information anywhere then it would be massive, but since we are, itll fit just fine on a 360 disc? Thats like not news.

This is hilarious. Codemasters will have released 3 full on racing games before GT5 ever even see's the light of day(and all 3 are multi-plat!!). Not only that, but Grid is a better game on many levels. It might not be quite as much a "simulator" but it is alot more fun, and it has DAMAGE! And the online play puts GT5 to shame. I think this game has a lot of potential, and will be something a little different than what's available.

@Tanner
I knew the answer. Currently only 1 title out of 200+ is 50 gigs. Resistance 2 and FFXIII aren't even out yet. I was hoping you would understand why people still assumed that these devs were talking about the 25 gig disc.

but its still being made for the 360?? hmmm. well the dudes creating Rage were mad at using 3 DVD's.....hows this gunna work? are we gunna have to settle for a poorer game again(like rage). i hope not. and another thing, is he talking about the 50 or 25 GB discs?. metal gear filled 50...Resistance2 might be filling 50. if there talking about the 50GB disc then thats huge!! thats like 200GB!!. Well if that Hitachi(i think) company manage to get the 100GB disc in full production it'll only be two discs :)

This is a very interesting concept. 4 Blu-Ray disks. What can be expected? Massive free roaming? Damage? Complex transforming cars and boss fights where the planet exploder then we get to fly around in the wrekage and have awesom intergalactic races across the UNIVERSE! I don't buy it unless all thats filling these 4 BLU-RAY disks or maybe they wilbe the first to utilize the higher capacity blu-ray disk.

The last game I bought with multiple discs was shyte - MAABUS lol
4x Blue Ray is a lot of levels or an overkill of detail, I would expect something like this for a Flight Sim, but umm
