Consumers buying PS3s faster than production

In a recent interview with Die Welt, Sony CEO Howard Stringer made a claim that the PlayStation brand had captured casual gamers long before Nintendo. Stringer stresses that even though they had the software to corner that market, that Sony did not pursue it as they should have. Instead, Sony's strategy was to create a console that appealed to gamers who play a lot which also had a ton of functionality.

"We held the same target group with the Singstar karaoke game. But perhaps we neglected to pursue that avenue," admits Stringer. "Playstation games are rather designed for those who play a lot. Although it's a different strategy, it pays off. We currently have a production bottleneck with the PlayStation 3 ... Consumers are purchasing our PlayStation 3 video game consoles faster than we can produce them."

As expected, Stringer also noted that he does not see Nintendo's latest craze, the Wii, as a rival.

"The Wii is not succeeding at our expense – it is not hurting us. We decided years ago to build a game console that offers much greater functionality."

For those curious about price cuts. Stringer made sure to mention that he doubts there will be one before Christmas. While this does disappointment, it makes sense for Sony to deny the cut until it happens.

@2 Oh, you'll find plenty of people who agree....NOW! I was saying that when people all over (including, I'm sure, a TON of people on thi very message board) was whing "BUT IT'S A GAMING CONSOLE FIRST!" They scorned Blu-Ray because of what it did to the price! And because of that, THE WHOLE WORLD disagreed with you...BACK THEN. Now it's genius. The crowd truly is fickle.

I was just in walmart yesterday morning and the price of the 40 GB version is at $349.99; down from $399.  The 80 GB is in stock and it is $399.  So,  what's the deal?

I wouldn't see the Wii as a rival either, I see a rapid decline for the console, about as rapid as the sales currently butI can't tell you when that decline will happen... maybe next year.

Well as far as the Wii goes, its a great console with poor software. They have totaly forgot about hard core gamers thats for sure.Sony is doing what they always have done is give you variety.I cannot justify buying a Wii with only a hand full of games to chose from.

psn id: gingo.... now i'm no expert but i predict the ps3 will outsell the 360 over the consoles lifetime and that will be an achievement for sony as the wii can never fully succeed with the core gamers as the software is so poor mostly

Way to go Sony!  I still think they should release a PS3 LittleBigPlanet bundle in time for Christmas.  That would be the greatest bundle since NES with Mario & Duck Hunter ;)

    "

Stringer: It's a different experience. The Wii is a well-made device that has found a new target group. For a while, we held the same target group with the SingStar karaoke game. But perhaps we neglected to pursue that avenue. Playstation games are rather designed for those who play a lot. Although it's a different strategy, it pays off. We currently have a production bottleneck with the Playstation 3."

Thats all, a biottleneck can simply mean they are having difficulties producing PS3's, nothing about consumer demand.

@ 6 I must have been in the minority back then along with yourself as i saw the addition of the blu ray player to be genius right from the off, I was pleased that Sony had pulled out the stops to produce a truely updated piece of kit that would really have a decent technological life span. And it really is true that in life you get what you pay for

hmm he said he have a bottleneck, with production, and they cant keep up with demand, Nothing to do with sales..........Sony need to start working on there software for the ps3 and getting home and there online service sorted out... before the  xbox360 comes out. with there update, but i think the 360 as already been a major success, and done what it needed to do. sony might outsell it in the end,., but you must remember there is a new xbox coming soon. it was never ment to go on as long as the ps3.
