Dead Space corpses based on car crash images

In an interview with Edge-Online, Dead Space Executive Producer Glen Schofield has revealed that his team studied photos of car crashes in order to create some of the nastier parts of the game.

"In the story of Dead Space, there was a war that happened on the ship before Isaac, the main character, gets there," Schofield explained. "So he’s going to find a lot of nasty stuff, corpses in various states of annihilation.

"We knew this would be difficult to portray, because sometimes gore in games looks cheap and unrealistic," he went on. "Sure enough, the first few corpses that we did, just weren’t convincing enough. I rejected them.

"This sounds horrible, but we had to go look at pictures of car accidents and war scenes and things like that because we had to get it right; we had to portray scenes of terrible carnage and realism. It’s a big part of making that experience convincing."

Dead Space seems to have benefited from this rather grisly approach - the Metacritic score average is sitting pretty at 88%.

What do you guys think? Is this a step too far in the name of entertainment?

The game is released today in North America and on October 24 in Europe.

i see dead bodies in car crashes quite alot (work for fire service) i can't see nothing wrong with this, its good to see a developer going that bit extra for realism.

I think thats a bit degrading. What happened to using you imagination man.

Sorry if im singled out here but I wouldnt of used real images of  dead peoples blooded bodies to make a game with. surely its not that hard to make it look real.

I still want this game but 4 some reason that dissapointed me.

    Dont hate!

They haven't used real pictures of bodies, they been looking at pictures in order to portray the realism.

I think people are lost. They did't use real images in the game. The used the images as reference. As ever good artist should do.

    This isn't a big deal.

The guys are making a "HORROR" game and people complain about them referencing war and car crash photos? Are you serious? What do you want Dead Space without blood? Resident Evil without blood? Get real and stop being so sensitive.

At 5, I agree I actually feel quite disgusted at this I know a lot of gory research goes into things. But I don't neccersarily feel that makes it ok, I'd rather not know about this type of thing. I want games to be enjoyable but I don't  particularly enjoy knowing that whlist walking around on Dead Space that computer generated images that have been researched by poor souls who died  in a car accident, though I understand they were not using their bodies that would have been taking it to the limit..

This is no different for films that reinact events in the past or horror films that shows scenes of realistic death. Still doesnt mean I like it, but  I understand the developers were obviously not enjoying it and they were going out on a limb (no pun intended) to make this game realistic and provide an excellent game. I just find it a bit degrading but thats just my preference and maybe pushing it a little far. However I know research has to come from somewhere but I guess someone has to do it..

    • 10:40am BST - October 14th, 2008

I am not sure about this, it's not a life like game so why do that? I think it's taking it a bit far to have to look at images of dead people to make your own dead bodies. This game isn't even meant to be life like, so what's the point?  A dead body is a dead body, it's doesn't have to look like car crash victim does it? Especially as the dead bodies wont have even been in the same situation.  Just  stupid advertising I think.

    @17

What do you mean this game isn't "life like"?  The game is a sci fi with a realistic take. Think of the movie Event Horizon or sunshine and then you get a similar vibe for what is going on here.

People, the process is the same for all 3d artists striving for realism. It doesn't matter if it is a game, for a cg movie, for a SFX sequence in a real movie or for a cartoon. Artists look at real reference material to help guide theri artwork.

its certainly an interesting approach, i didn't expect that, but to be honest it can only be good for the atmosphere of the game.

To the people telling me too read properly, I read it and I know that its not images of real dead bodies that will be in the actual game.I undersyand reaserch is research too. I just personally wouldnt of used real peoples dead body as pic references.

I can jus see the artist at his/her comp with a pic of a dead dismembered body next to him/her.  Will the final result be worth it?. I doubt it because its nothing they couldnt do already. From what ive seen the deadspace team are very good, so for that reason I thought they didnt need to go there and was a tincy bit dissapointed thats all really.

As I said dont hate just coz a brother has an opinion. Were all diff up in ere.

Still think it will be a great game.

From readin' these comments, you'd think the guys caused the car accidents themselves before lookin' at the pictures...

I don't see anyone in here sendin' a55hurt letters of complaint to the staff behind "CSI: Miami" for studyin' actual corpses...

Most artists get there ideas from other sources.
TBH, i would have been more surprised to find out that they weren't using photos, i'm sure other games companies have.

I think going too far was making us watch the dead bodies in driving school, but this is art. It takes art to instill the right feeling into a game, DaVinci had to dissect many people, including pregnant women, to get his art just right. Look at Francisco Goya's work, he never could have made them so realistic if he hadn't witness the corpses on the battlefield. When you just use your imagination you come up with hoakey hollywood stuff, the real, actual violently killed dead are a very different thing from what a person expects. Probably just a hype engine mentioning this, but I think it is inspired. I never could have effectively portrayed such things in my horror writing without seeing it.

That's pretty gross, but as long as the developers don't get traumatized while doing it I guess it's fine. It also makes for a more terrifying experience.

They are not using pictures of real bodies, they are just getting ideas of what the creatures should look like as far as disfigurement. Stop being a bunch of wussy's

Any game which is made needs research, this is just lame reporter aticles, it's like saying "to make ER thay studied real hospitals, real accidents, blablabla!" If your gonna make a game racing games than your bound to do research ojn each care like for GT. Did you guy's know that before using crash dummies car makers used actual real corps to test want injuries would be inflicted on a body in a crash and thats the best way they were able to progress in car security!

I think that might've been a bit too far but as long as they kept it strictly fictional,it's fine.On a side note, when are you gonna put up your Dead Space review PSU?
