EA to scrap "EA BIG" brand

After producing franchises such as NBA Street, FIFA Street and SSX, Peter Moore let the media know that the "EA BIG" brand will now "go away."
Although it produced well-selling franchises, it seems that this division of EA no longer has a place amongst the company's plans or direction.
"EA Big will go away," Moore explained. "It will eventually disappear and it's actually had a longer shelf life in Europe than it has over here. BIG as a label is a little restricted. It's action sports, it's extreme sports - you think of SSX and the Street games. We needed a broader platform to go forward."
Although the label is being terminated, there was no indication that the franchises would follow suit. Although very strong on the last generation of consoles, most of the games under the label have garnered little recognition but were showcased as more of what the industry had already seen.

psn id: gingo.....@DINAMO788...... no i actually agree with Girugamesh it would do the gaming world a lot of good if EA took a break for a year or two and designed their whole philosophy about making games and they might realise that people dont want crap games every year but a classic game that might take a bit longer although you are spot on we would lose half our games but is that really such a bad thing in such a crowded market where fantastic games get missed because of titles such as madden and fifa

@DINAMO788
It's fine if half of our games go away. We have WAY too many. A flow of mediocrity. Most of it stemming from EA.
I agree with gingo. EA needs to take a break, realize that they need to be making fewer games and making them very good instead of loads of games that bring the gaming business nowhere.

well if you're cool with never getting/having Black, The Sims, Battlefield, dead space, LOTR, etc games then fine.
also remember the amount of new gamers its sports franchises bring in that otherwise probably wouldn't have really gotten into videogames.

@DINAMO778
I'm cool with that.
Because I've never owned one of those games you just listed and definitely never will. (I might give a second look to Dead Space but I could certainly live without it.) EA's resources could be used on much, much better projects.

@gingo... I totally agree with you, I'm tired of seeing good franchises go to the ground because of EA's ridiculous deadlines and it's narrow vision. Take for example the need for speed franchise, at one time it was called the gran turismo of arcade racers and now it's just another crappy every year release title. And one last thing to EA... stop trying to monopolize the gaming industry. I know you people are buying game studios so to aim for an universal game console, but that WILL NEVER happen.

Was I the only one who liked NFL Tour? I never bought the game, but I play the demo at least twice a day.

Sure EA produces a large portion of games, but when its almost all shovelware, its not really a loss.
SSX Tricky is one of my all time favorite games, yet I didnt like either SSX3 or SSX On Tour. I dont really like the direction they are headed, so no loss here.

Bottom line is EA has a very narrow business model that when they have a hit in their hands, they milk it until their is enough negative feedback to garner it a overhaul. A prime example was madden when it was suffering for sometime until its recent iteration.

EA BIG as a label is going away, the games and franchises under that label are not. I always thought it should just be EA Sports.

My problem with EA is every time they take over a good game it sucks when its put out by them, remember 007 James Bond & Medal of Honor. Those games were great until EA got there hands on it and ruin the series. They just got too big and dont have to try hard to put out a big game.

EA is all about the money, so any games that sell will continue to be made - just not under the 'BIG' banner.
EA don't need to 'go', they just need to go back to their roots. In the days of the C64, Amiga and so on, they produced quality titles. Now they stick with their big titles like FIFA, Madden, and rarely try anything original.
Battlefield Bad Company is about the best thing they've done in recent times. Other new IPs like Army of Two have been average at best. They've lost the knack of making quality original titles.
Where are things like next-gen Desert Strike, which was great fun to play? If EA made a PSN version of Desert Strike - updated with flashier graphics etc. in the same way Housemarque did with Super Stardust - it'd be great fun.
