Epic Vice President applauds Blu-ray

Mark Rein, VP of Epic Games, has gone on record to suggest that Blu-ray offers an extra level of breathing space over DVD when developing games.
He was speaking at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival about Unreal Tournament 3, developed by Epic.
The often outspoken Rein seemed to seemed to welcome the extra storage space Blu-ray offers. A single layer Blu-ray disc can hold 25GB, whilst a dual layer can pack in a massive 50GB. Dual layer DVDs, used by the Xbox 360, have a limit of 8.5GB.
Rein warned: "We may have fewer maps on the 360 version…Blu-ray has definitely given us a lot of legroom."
"If you think down the road, well maybe the next UT beyond this one, on Blu-ray disc, we might fill the whole damn disc with all the cool stuff the mod makers make."
Ever since the PS3's inception there have been endless debates on whether or not Blu-ray extra capacity is really required for games. Perhaps such a statement from a high profile developer is evidence enough to suggest that Sony made the right decision to include Blu-ray with PS3.
Unreal Tournament 3 is scheduled for release on PS3 and PC later this year with an Xbox 360 version due out in early 2008.

SWEET. The PS3 is certainly the console of the future, just sucks that they're getting their hat handed to them in the present.

Dude, this goes to again prove that the 360 is dead by now. DVD is too old and can't keep up with the games of this generation. Microsoft will probably have to release yet a third version of Xbox within this generation, cause the 360 is left behind.

Dont know if everyone read that article about Killzone 2 a month ago. It stated that just one level of the game took up 2GB of space! Also, the whole of the up and coming Ratchet & Clank game would take up 17GB. There's no way the xbox 360 will be able to compete with the PS3 in the future because of the amount of space needed for Next Generation games.

Sony makes their consoles with the future in mind,Sony knew the criticism was coming but they also knew that the future of a console is much more important.

I would like to personally thank Epic for not being lazy and more concerned with criticizing instead of spending less time in interviews and more working on their games. Words cannot describe how thankful I am to them that not only will Unreal Tournament III be on the PS3, but it will not be ported from the 360. That is all many PS3 owners truely ask when the day is done. Developers, just give it your all on the system and we will support you and we will give our money to you.

honestly i dont think we will see the need for blu-ray until next year some time. come on, only a couple maps difference, they will put them up on live. gta iv is still gonna be the same for both systems. so there isnt anything yet that cant be made on the 360 because of the dvd's size.

Blu-ray is great for gaming, even if it failed in the movie format, it would still be a great pallet for gaming. Blu-ray cant lose at this point.

HDDVD holds 15gb(30 on dual layer) but they're refering to their gaming standard DVD9 (dual layer version of standard 4.7gb dvds) which holds a maxium of 9gb. Since MS has refused to use HDDVD for games they lost a huge battle to the PS3 in terms of not only possible avalilable content but the visual fidelity of that content unless they use compression to squeeze more on to a DVD9 but they waste more loading time decompressing it and they can still never hope to push more than 12 compressed gb on a DVD9 which is still half the size of a standard BluRay disk.

Man, M$ had to learn the hard way. NES game cartridges held under 1MB, SNES cartridges held 8MB, N64 cartrdiges held 128MB, Gamecube discs held 1.4GB and now Wii discs can hold 8.5GB. Same with Sony, PS1 discs had up to 700MB, PS2 discs had up to 8.5GB. But M$ fvcked up, because both Xbox and 360 has up to 8.5GB. Every generation, each system HAS to bump up in storage space...but M$ just wanted to "save money" because they are greedy bastards

Everyone read what faizal5k (post #34) said! It is so true. Major cool points to faizal5k for bringing this to light. If everyone would look at the xbox360's name it would show just what Microsoft had in mind about their so-called next-gen console. Here we go ----> the 360 attached to the name xbox360 really means xbox 360° (360 degrees) and what does 360° mean??? It means when you are going in a certain direction and turn 360° you will be going back in the same direction as before. You see the xbox and xbox360 are actually going in the same direction, the last-gen direction. I am glad Sony has the real vision for the future of the gaming industry. PS3, it's in the box!

The funny thing is that devs probably had more space on the xbox dvd's because the 360's DRM take up about 1.5 gigs. There are 7 available to devs.

Even if Blu-Ray capacity isn't necessary, isn't it unfair that MS is selling games on DVD for the same price as PS3's Blu-Ray games? You think that with a disc half the price of Blu-Ray, they would try to get the upper hand (while caring about their install base) and sell their games for cheaper. Be we already found out they could care less about their console buyers. RROD. And not just from store boxes, but from the replacement center. That's sick, MS.
