Website Fortune reports that Sony may be looking to launch its expanded PlayStation Network service in spring 2010.
According to Sony Corporation bigwig Sir Howard Stringer, the service is expected to make Sony products "talk to each other efficiently," making it easier for punters to handle digital camera images, edit videos and share content. Furthermore, incentives will be put in place for ‘brand loyalists,’ such as discounts and premium services.
Global PlayStation boss Kazuo Hirai commented: “It’s now a matter of what all the services need to look like for each device, and coming up with a rollout plan,” adding, “It’s like city planning here, and we can start small. We don’t need to build New York City overnight.”
We'll have more developments on Sony's plans for PSN as they become available.

CROSS-GAME VOICE CHAT DAMNIT!!!
Nevermind cross-product communication, surely if you can do this, you're therefore able to develop cross-game voice chat!? It seems much easier to me for Sony to simply develop firmware capable of allowing all PlayStation 3 users to communicate at any time, regardless of the current function, via their console than it does to create a wide range of varying products, especially of differing functions, that are intergrated to be able to communicate. I'm a Sony loyalist anyway: I'm intending to get a new Sony HDTV to compliment my PlayStation, and always look to them for laptops and other computing devices - coincidentally, I also need a new phone... Sony -so I'll undoubtedly benefit from this, but they really need to focus on bringing great benefits, which I can't stress enough (Cross-game Voice Chat), to their PlayStation users, rather than average innovations that I can't see being of great use.

Please stop harping on about cross game chat!!!!!!
M$ has the patent so if Sony want to use it they have to pay them for the licence same as custom sound tracks.
Until Sony find a way around this we AINT gonna get it!!!

I agree, I'd rather Sony forcus on more "ps3" features, Like internet radio(In-game), RSS system.
All I really need for ps3 (Cross game chat is pointlesss)
I don't have any use for PSN on a phone tbh.

I knew Sony were going to head down this direction, FAST. There pushing all the systems to use digital software and to be able to swap and move information fast, this is good. I also am all for companies giving there loyal custumers a discount, thumbs up from me.

Custom soundtracks is game specific. If the game supports it than it is there. Some do, some dont. So Sony doesnt need to add it to there overhead. Cross game chat is pointless and doubt will ever get implemented. As for the article, it is talking about PSN on TVs, BD players etc. Direct download of movies from the PSN to your TV etc.

@16 and 19:
Cross-game voice chat enables you to talk to online friends that aren't playing the same game as you, so instead of switching games to talk, you can talk to anyone on your Friend List via the PlayStation 3, rather than just those specifically on the same game as you. If you only intend to talk to the people you're playing against, that's fine, but it'll be a benefit to many if they can talk to anyone about anything they want and to just chat in general, rather than only talking about what you're currently doing on a specific game, which is what single-game voice chat currently restricts us to. The current chat scheme seems to somewhat limit players the only converse specifically about the game on hand, whereas cross-game will enable more general conversation to a wider audience, rather than restricting a player to a means of communication that doesn't appear to be as user-friendly.

When confronted between a choice between voice and text chat, it's obviously easier to communicate vocally rather than to type. Cross-game text chat and messages require you to pause the game, bring up the XMB and access the required application, as well as taking time and substantial effort to comprise the desired message. Voice chat enables instant communication within minimal effort in the smallest possible amount of time. I do agree that the PS3 can do with better updates, but there is nothing that I can currently foresee, and although every update will be a welcomed one, I can't see any that will currently be more beneficial than cross-game voice chat. I personally have no ideas for what Sony could update us with, so can't even give any other suggestions, however the only reasonable suggestion I can currently consider is the implementation of cross-game voice chat. It just seems the most obvious and most beneficial upgrade at this current moment in time.

heres a question about X-game-voice-chat...how would that work if you were playing a online game like say COD or Killzone, a large % of folks playing those type of games are using voice-chat to communicate within their teams/squads. i don't personally do that and i've stopped doing that since COD4...just not the communicating type i guess...but for those that do use it, are you saying that you wouldn't mind having a friend try to talk to you while your trying to capture and hold an area and becuz your friend is "chatting" with you you don't hear your squad leader tell you to cover the rear or something like that? maybe i really am missing the point here, what is the point, really? alot of you say so you can chat with friends who are playing a different game...ok, is that the only reason? what the he11 are you gonna talk about? who you saw at the mall...what that girl from 3rd period history class said about you...jeez... i guess i would rather be playing a game THAT I'M PLAYING rather than hear what some of my friends think of some other game...

mayhemmusic, that is the dumbest thing I have ever heard so far. If sony uses that certain software for chatting however, they will make their own. So no it's not patented and you can't and I repeat CAN'T patent that. There are so many loopholes in that stupid patent it's ridiculous. All sony has to do is make there own program, tweak a few things and send it out, there is nothing your beloved Microsoft can do about it.

@25
Yes, you have missed the point. If you are playing a team online match, then yeah, it's pointless because you'd be better off talking to your team, but if you was playing just a simple deathmatch, you have no reason to talk to anyone else about the game in hand. Likewise, if you was playing a single player game, such as inFamous, whilst a friend was playing Uncharted, it'd be a good addition to be able to chat to them. Yes, it would be pointless in a team gamne, I admit, but there are other benefits voice chat can bring other than just talking to your team. What you're implying is that you never talk to any of your friends about anything other than games. When playing videogames, this is acceptable, but do you ever use a mobile/cell phone to communicate, or even meet up in real life? When I'm with friends, I tend to talk. It'd be a good addition, like I've previously stressed, to be able to talk via my PlayStation without being limited by the game I'm playing. It also allows organisation. Using the same example, if you was playing inFamous, and a friend Uncharted, you can organise an online game together that you're not currently playing - "Hey, fancy a Team Deathmatch on Call of Duty after I finish this mission...?" - it will bring great advantages to video games, and there are no foreseeable disadvantages that will hinder any gamers in any way!
@26
No. With a mobile phone, you are limited by credit/time/contracts and can only talk to a single person at a time. What I was suggesting was a Party Chat, such as that on Xbox LIVE. That way, you can talk to any of your online friends at any time, with no limitations. In your views, the same could be said about regular chat. Why bother having a headset to plan team strategies in a Team Deathmatch on Call of Duty when you can just use your mobile to ring up every single person on the team instead, as well as being charged for it at the same time? Voice chat is a good implementation, but it limits users to only speak to people on the same game they're playing. Cross-game voice chat enables you to talk to anyone. I have alot of friends on the PSN, it'd be good to talk to them as easily as I could in reality rather than being limited to those on the exact same game as me. But I've already stressed that enough, and you didn't understand it the first few times I said it...
* * *
For those of you that don't understand what I'm saying, just don't bother commenting, as I'm just getting my suggestions across. If you want to question or even criticise my views, please make sure you fully understand what the point I'm putting across is before attempting to debate anything. It's pointless and a waste of time for everyone.

@ Beasley2k, i see your point now...some what. i'm a 30+ yr old gamer with kids that play online occasionally, but most of the time i play single player games. same with my friends (a few of them still play and the rest of my other psn friend list i don't know personally). i guess i was merely looking at it from my perspective as a gamer that does not play ultra hardcore and not into clans and such. i mean, you your the type of player that is like this, i can see why you would want this feature. but as for me, if i am playing my Disgaea 3 and my friend wants to chat it up with me or something like that, i would wait till i was done with the game to even respond. and this is like my real friends that i'm talking about here. i know their are people like me out there and the same goes for you at your end (and in between), and if sony does give us X-cross chat then cool, one more feature for us, but if not, it won't really bother me any. i wasn't trying to debate you, so relax and take it easy, i merely wanted to know what exactly what your point was and now you have said it so .... cool.

For the cross platform chat thing... Why couldn't Sony get around the thing by getting/allowing a third party (TeamSpeak) to develope software that will work on a PS3 so people could log onto a TeamSpeak server from their PS3? It doesn't seem anything like what MS does and I like teamspeak better anyways. Lots of gaming clans, at least on games for PC, have their own server they pay for anyway. I don't think it woudl be hard to make a deal where they allowed PS3 owners to use their PS3s to log onto their servers.
