EyeToy devs criticise Xbox camera, Wii remote

Harmonix and Nintendo might have taken casual gaming to the headlines, but it was Sony who arguably kickstarted that particular revolution with products like Buzz, SingStar and Sony London's EyeToy camera. The latter has built up an installed base of 10.5 million during its five years on the market, and has benefited from strong in-house software support.

With the Mario creator now firmly in the casual gaming driving seat and Microsoft pushing out the likes of You're In The Movies, EyeToy game designers Sandy Spangler and Mark Parry have been chatting to GamesIndustry.biz about their competitors.

Spangler began by talking up EyeToy as against the Wii remote. "It's more intuitive, it's very clear, as opposed to trying to figure out how to... use the Wii remote in ways that maybe naturally don't make sense - you wave it a lot to do activities where you wouldn't be waving in real life.

"Whereas what we always try and do with our games is make a direct correlation between the motion that you're doing and the action on screen, the effect you're having on the game."

He admitted, however, that the Wii had been "great" for the genre as a whole. "[The Wii] has also been great because now there's that much more interest in casual gaming and other ways to interface with games. I think it's just great, it's just making that many more people out there who maybe would never have thought about buying a videogame system or playing videogames - suddenly they're interested. That's expanding the market, that's always good."

More sustained criticism was applied to Microsoft's Xbox Live Vision camera, which launched in late 2006. "It's surprising - the camera came out a while ago and they came out with the one download game, Totem Ball, and then that was it." Spangler observed. "I think that [with You're In the Movies] they're probably going to have some technical difficulties to wrestle with.

"They're using some technical elements that are not reliable, at least not according to our experience. They're using background subtraction to put you in the movie, and it's not very robust, that's why we haven't done it in any of our games. If the white shifts in the room or something, it can stop working. Good luck to them."

There's absolutely oodles more through the link.

To be a touch critical, where is the developement for the Playstation Eye? I'd buy one if there was more than a card game available for it

Lol, there are more games than that for the EYE. I own two more myself. It seems as if some people don't check the PSN store at all.

@5 - Ha. You my friend havn't been paying attention. There are a good number of downloadable games on PSN for the PSeye, then there's stuff like LBP and Burnout Paredise which use the camera as well. NTM - in regards to the "eye toy" - of which there were a number of titles on the PS2 that used the device.

I'm sorry, but I have to agree with 'west_end_matt'! The amount of so called games on the psu store for the Eye is pretty feeble and they are very basic and pretty naff quite frankly. The only game thats really any good for the Eye, is the card game, Eye of Judgement. Apart from that, development for the Eye as far as I'm concerned has been very poor.

I bought a PS Eye a few days back. I've been meaning to get one for a while, but I never got around to it. The Eye games on the store don't really interest me, but I bought it mainly for Burnout Paradise and LBP. Hopefully there will be a lot more proper games out that use the camera well. (a proper package, like Eyetoy play) Did Eyedentify get canned? The only other game I know that will be using the Eye is Eye Pet, and that's not out until winter 2009.

psn id: gingo... to be fair though i havnt exactly seen a massive amount of games using the PSEye either so until they start making more good games like Trials of Topoq they shouldn't criticise others

i get where u guys are commin from.. i too recently bought the eye.. to be honest i really use it for eye create and video chat with my friends.. or just a mic when i'm playing cod.. but the games for it are lacking to me as well.. and i think the eye has great potential for really competitive games to run the wii and i don't consider 360 competition anymore.. i would like it to do a lil more in games than take profile photos... ( oh yeah the poker game is cool why not a vegas or casino type game lots of interaction)

    @8

Matt  seemed to imply that there was only 1 game available for the Playstation Eye. And he was wrong. There are 7 games available for the Playstation eye and there are 18 games that currently use the features of the playstation eye.

The arguement about quality is purely subjective and it can be put to meager terms. I have the Eye, I didn't purchase eye of judgement. i did not find it worth it.

Yeah.  They hyped up the PS Eye when it first came out saying that it was going to re-revolutionize gaming with the ability to utilize the Eye as a virtual interactive interface but, I have yet to see many games that are out on the PS store that are really innovative or ground breaking. Granted, that one card battle game that came out before was utilising it a little.  I think it has the potential to create a new world of gaming in conjunction with the PS3's hardware but I have yet to see it being useful other than for home-made videos/pictures and for chat.  Tis a shame.

I must say that the games for the PSeye are pretty freakin lame IMO.  These guys are actually saying how bad it is to use this and that (I'm not taking microsofts side either), but they still have yet to put a good PSeye game on the PSN store.  Sorry but they are all crappy.  That new one coming out called "eyepet" wont be that much different either. I have a couple of PSeye games and they were just a waste of $2.99.  Yes, $2.99, those games should have been free for god sakes.  not only that but waving your hands infront of a camera and the stuff doesn't interact properly makes people look like idiots.
