FF Versus XIII placed on hold

Square Enix hasn't been scoring any new PlayStation fans with their recent announcements regarding Star Ocean or The Last Remnant; however, they may try to even things out by getting Final Fantasy XIII out to the fans a bit sooner than expected.
In the latest Famitsu an interview was conducted with Tetsuya Nomura regarding both upcoming Final Fantasy titles. Nomura let it be known that Final Fantasy Versus XIII will be placed on hold until the team finishes up Final Fantasy XIII. The reason given for this decision was that the majority of the Versus XIII development crew is now working full force on XIII's development.
On top of this announcement, Nomura also revealed that at their private invite-only event come August, both Versus XIII and XIII will only be displaying trailers and not playable demos. While this may not sound too positive for those of us waiting for an official release date to be announced, we can assume that this may push production forward a tad with the extra developer support.
The event in August is also going to display a variety of other trailers and playable demos for the current Square Enix lineup in development. We've included the list below.
- FINAL FANTASY Agito XIII(Mobile)Trailer
- KINGDOM HEARTS Coded(Mobile)Trailer
- KINGDOM HEARTS 358/2 Days(DS)Trailer/Playable Demo
- KINGDOM HEARTS Birth by Sleep(PSP)Trailer/Playable Demo
- DISSIDIA FINAL FANTASY(PSP)Trailer/Playable Demo
- The 3rd Birthday(Mobile)Trailer
- Sigma Harmonics(DS)Trailer/Playable Demo
- FINAL FANTASY VII ADVENT CHILDREN COMPLETE(Movie/Blu-ray)Trailer
Invitees to the event will not be allowed to take photos, so here's to hoping some of these trailers and demos will be popping up at E3.

@Dave-the-rave
I was thinking the same thing. I am a little dissapointed that there has been no official announcement regarding release dates yet, let alone in-game footage. It's quite obvious it's not launching this year, but I hope we won't be waiting until next holiday season.

The title scared me also, but as long as they are pumping more development into finishing FFXIII first, it makes more sense. Get FFXIII out first, then work on Versus XIII.

I'm sad that Versus XIII is delayed, but if it means we get FFXIII sooner, then it's all good. Hopefully this means they will release it this year, or at least Q1 2009.

It seems to me that Square is desperately trying to get a PS3 game out to make up for the Star Ocean 4 thing.

Of course, put the one on hold that I actually want, and put the totally shi tty looking one on shelves as soon as possible. That sounds like a great idea. Now I'll have to wait even longer for a good RPG because XIII is going to be trash just like X-2, will Square Enix never learn female main characters are a waste of time, space, and money.

Funny how everyone says X-2 was trash. I've personally found that a lot of the people that say that haven't even played through the whole game. I thought X-2 was good. They brought back the ATB but made it faster, they brought back the job class but disguised it. The main story has two sides to it with the second side being deeper and darker. If the guys that played X-2 put down their testosterone pills and get past the overly obvious female influence on the game, they'd find a really cool game worth being a sequal.

I had the misfoturne of actually playing the game, your right, I didn't finish it, because I couldn't stand that game for too long. "worthy sequel" well I guess you could consider it worthy if you actually enjoyed playing FFX, however, I did not. My favorite is obviously FFVII, I hated FFVIII, enjoyed playing FFIX, didn't care for FFX, and hated FFX-2. I've played the older ones as well, any perhaps they were good for their time, I do love the storytelling element of the first Final Fantasies, that's about all their worth, and really isn't that what makes an RPG more than graphics or cut scenes? I beta tested FFXI didn't like the lose xp when you die deal so played a myriad of other mmo's instead. FFXII was also a disappointment, but not nearly as bad as FFX or FFVIII. If you want a good story go play the older Final Fantasies or FFVII, then try to play FFX-2 and tell me that it's story line is nearly as good as those of the past.

@ferret66
Well, to start with FFX, I liked the Auron character more than the main character, now normally Squaresoft/Square Enix will put a character like this into the Final Fantasy games ex. Vincent Valentine, where he is incredibly cool, however, usually they give the main character some sort of redeeming qualities, none of which I found with FFX's main character. I didn't really like the mini game they chose for FFX but that's really more of an opinion. FFX-2 I really don't even know where to get started, all of the female leads felt very campy, with very little real emotion. I know that may sound kind of strange but the point of an RPG is to really develop the characters into people that make you care about them. FFX-2's story was weak and just tried to develop an already weak story from the first iteration.

F uck you. Saying a game is bad because there's a f ucking girl as one of the main characters is bull s hit. Shut your face because we don't need to hear your sexist c rap. It's a main series game, and also the first on a system. So Were X and VII, and I loved those. I have strong hopes for XIII because it's in a situation like X was, meaning the first to be ever made for that console. X was amazing, so I'm basing my REASONABLE opinion on that

@Alti
Other than the Auron character, what about that story wasn't weak?
@29
It isn't very REASONABLE to say that just because a title is first on a new system that it is going to be good, usually it's the reverse, as developers find new ways to utilize a new system's power the games that come out for it increase in quality. I'm not a sexist, I enjoy becoming part of the story in an RPG, back when you usually got to rename your main character I would more often than not use my own alias to try to get a better feel for that character. I happen to be a male and I assume that the vast majority of gamers are as well, so if I'm trying to get into a game it doesn't make sense to make the main character a female, cases like tomb raider, where it is obvious that the main character is a female for some T&A makes sense, but to try and make a female main character for this kind of game doesn't. I'm sorry that you disagree but there is no reason to start cussing about it.

@The Master I agree about FFX-2 the story is really weak and the costume system is really not the style of an FF game, and no Im not being sexist. About FFX I must say I enyoyed the game and tidus makes a good character because is an original formula and not the I hate everyone because somebody destroyed my life kind of character thats way overused in RPGs. Also I got to disagree about women not making good main characters, it's all about making a good story around the char. and not his/her gender

Well, I guess this saves me some guessing as to which game to play first. That and no more rushing to finish one game just to play the other so this might not be such a bad thing.. Plus with FFXIII finishing first, they might learn some new tricks to make Versus XIII better.

@ the master:
the FFX story was epic, with a serious twist. You're lead to believe you're going to group with a bunch of rebels [like always] and then save the world and the guy and girl protagonists get together for a happy ending. FF8, and 9 for example.
then half way through, you found that in order to save the world, yuna had to die, and sacrafice herself to the final summon. How is that weak?
The characters had back stories so they weren't flat. Very personality driven too. Sure, tidus was a pussy. and he played the part well enough for you to hate him for such.
Aside from that, you have this d*ckhead seymore trying to become sin--which happens to be the protagonist's father. And yuna feels obligated to live up to [her father] braska's rep [which is why she was the only summoner to complete the pilgramage]. She was DRIVEN.
meanwhile you have a fully realised world with its own alliances, own sense of prayer, fashion styles, architecture etc. none of which are just a clones of earth's. [except mayb the hawaiins?]
AND. betwix it all, yuna marry's an evil man she doesn't love to bring peace to a couple races--WHILE she's trying to bring peace to the world by defeating sin. That gives Tidus conflict, and progresses the story constantly.
And that's just the story [from what I remember, after all those years], which, for some reason, you don't respect. need I go on about the visuals? They were AMAZING "for their time," both in realtime and CG. Seriously, FFX was a masterpiece. Deepest characters, deepest story, arguably the best visuals [no contest with the CG at least], and over all one of the most memorable installment in the series, reguardless of whether or not you liked it. What could it have done better? Killed tidus?
news.
it pretty much did. :)
hows that for a bland story/game.
....and yes. auron was awesome.
