  • Solid Create-a-Boxer feature
  • Easy gameplay mechanics

We dislike

  • Too difficult even on the lowest setting
  • Some characters may come off as cheap

(continued from previous page) ...highest, results in your character being able to perform his/her hilarious FaceBreaker. The other way to pick up the W is by scoring three knockouts. If a boxer doesn’t reach either goal, the fight will enter into a sudden death mode where the first knockdown wins.

The only true downfall to the gameplay is the difficulty level. While PixelJunk Monsters made difficult gaming fun and addictive, FaceBreaker will push gamers away with that same problem. Even on the easiest setting, the title is sometimes too challenging even for the most hardcore of players. EA definitely needs to update this portion of the game in order to make it a more accessible title for the casual gamer.

Visually, the game maintains a decidedly ‘cartoony’ feel to it, though the graphics nonetheless boost a high level of detail and make for some pleasurable viewing. Many of the boxers themselves are downright entertaining to watch, and equally as intimidating. The atmosphere and surrounding presentation outside of the ring is also particularly impressive. Not only will you see other boxers doing ridiculous things outside the ring, but also each ringside brings a unique comedic element to the table, which only works to elongate the game’s entertainment value considerably.

Online play, meanwhile, is largely similar to that of EA’s Fight Night Round 3. For those unfamiliar with the aforementioned brawler, suffice to say you can expect some discernable slow down at various points throughout a match, though due to it being that way on both sides of the screen, it doesn’t detract from the overall experience. I definitely see myself enjoying toe-to-toe battles online.

Ultimately, while FaceBreaker admittedly isn’t for everyone, the gameplay mechanics are on the whole highly inviting, affording gamers a true pick up and play experience. Having said that, the game’s difficulty even on the easiest setting is likely to deter casual audiences, and may cause some frustrations for even the most seasoned players. As a multiplayer experience both online or off, however, you’d be hard pressed to find something better.

The demo was horrible, and it does seem like a too high of a score.

It was a decent demo, im just guessing you guys sucked at the game and were beaten easily. But i agree, the game is difficult and the Create-A-Boxer is AWESOME!

This is a love it or hate it game, guys. Dave loves (or at least strongly likes) it. You might not. Taste differs.

Dave Wales, you're reviews never cease to amaze me. This game is complete crap, 8/10 is way off. I agree with the above 5/10. Nothing more. Please get a new reviewer for PSU.

If you read Justin Pinter's PSU preview of Facebreaker, he leaned toward not liking the game....

"If Facebreaker were a cheap PlayStation Network title, then we’d be gung-ho, but as of right now, the game lacks depth and caters only to the frantic button smashing newbies of fighting titles."

#3 NO. The game wasn't hard. It just wasn't fun to play. I'm guessing you liked it because the game required no thought whatsoever. Something based on your other posts you have great difficulty with.

@16 lol I don't get why everybody hates you.

the game was actually good. A funny boxing game with a new innovative gameplay. Of course it was extremely hard, I couldn't even win in on match in the demo on easy! Based on the demo (remember, demo, not the full game!) I think I would give it 7,5 or so.

    • 12:06pm BST - September 3rd, 2008

I cant even believe this is considered a next gen game. Or even current gen. And for the record, yes I played the demo. to win the match all i had to do was keep tapping buttons, no thought or no strategy. This game is a joke.

lol @ Dave Did EA just pay you 2 million dollars for giving Facebreaker a 8. While the demo was good Don't know how it was garbage must be too hard for them ?

@15 - How do you know I like games that dont require much thought from my posts? Actually, I do like games that challenge me lik SotC and I always wished KHII was harder. but I still think it was a decent demo. Don't bash me because I actually thought the game was decent (when playing on easy lol) but if I offended you in anyway I do apoligize. But just remeber, two wrongs don't make a right. The score was Dave's opinon, it doesn't mean everyone should agree with it.

@21  I have no problem with Dave.  I never said anything about Dave.  You are the one who made it personal.  Maybe you shouldn't start attacking people in the first place.  Dave has an opinion that it is an 8.  I have an opinion that it is a 5.  Just because someone doesn't like a game doesn't mean that they can't play it, so don't try to turn this around like I started something with you.

  23. Twilight93

    • 6:45pm BST - September 3rd, 2008

The two comments were not suppose to be together. Dave's score wasn't suppose to be part of the comment i meant for you. But lik I said, I'm sorry if I had offended you in anyway, which apparently I have. Now let's end this like two normal people and move on with our lives.

how can anyone say the demo was good? it let you play for like 30 seconds and wasted just that much of my life

    • 10:56pm BST - September 10th, 2008

Is this a joke? Obviously EA sent Mr. Dave Wales a free copy and since he has been doing this all of 3 months he felt obligated to give it a ridiculously retardedly high score. I'm all about differing opinions but I would pay to site down with this guy and have him explain to me what about Facebreaker deserves a 8/10.

    What a joke.

    • 11:21am BST - September 11th, 2008

Ultima, are you kidding me? GameInformer and Total Video Games gave FaceBreaker a 78 and 80 and OPM gave it a 7. My score is not "ridiculously" high. I'm not the only person who gave it the respect it deserves. It's a shame that so many people want to believe this is just some mindless button masher when there is such a deep strategical element to the game that makes it like chess.

Everyone has an opinion but it is worthless unless you put some reasons behind your opinion.  If you liked Ready 2 Rumble you will most likely enjoy this game.  I thought the game ROCKS minus the girl between rounds.  The controls are simple yet enough skill is needed with them to actually win (This is helpful if you wish your spouse/girlfriend to get involved).  If you played the demo for just a couple of rounds then you probably didn't get the full effect.  Dodge and Parry moves actually work unlike some games where you are getting the crap beat out of you and you can't do anything about it til your out for the count.  Online play is rather impressive considering how fast paced the action is in the ring as long as you have a fast connection... it does get a little jerky when someone with high latency connects to your match.  Outside of the girl between matches I would like to hear the  Ready 2 Rumble  announcer again.  I  give the game  8 out of 10
