According to the January 2009 issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly (as generously scanned in by Gamespot forumites), Square-Enix will be showing off the sequel to long-lived MMORPG Final Fantasy XI at next year's E3.

The new game - code-named "Rapture" in some circles - is "designed to coexist with (i.e. not replace)" its predecessor. FFXI Producer Hiromichi Tanaka told EGM that the "next-generation MMO that we're working on is going to be different than Final Fantasy XI. And even though we have the same staff working on the project, we're not going to make something that'll be exactly like FFXI."

Back in 2006, IGN reported that "Rapture" was in development for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. Little else is known of the game, including how exactly (or if at all) it relates to other Final Fantasy universes.

Very interesting news! I played FFXI for a couple of years and I really enjoyed it because of its community. Its biggest problem, imo, was that almost everything u had to do in order to progress u had to find a group which in turn led to the game requiring huge amounts of time out of the player's day. Hope they consider that factor.

Agree with you, fed up with these guys. Let me guess it will be scrapped on PS3 and will either go Exclusive to XBOX or to PC and box

@2  That wasn't FFXI's biggest problem, that was its biggest STRENGTH.  That community you liked about FFXI?  IT WAS THAT WAY BECAUSE YOU MORE THAN LIKELY HAD TO BE NICE TO PEOPLE BECAUSE YOU NEEDED THEM.  Look at Home, when you don't need people, they act like bu ttho les.  You will NEVER have both a friendly community AND solo-focused play in an MMORPG.

@ 7, no 2 had it right.  The fact that you had to depend on other people to almost anything in that game is one of the reasons I quit. At its basic core FFXI was a very good game. I shouldn't have to depend on people every step of the way just to complete quest or lvl. I really hope SE doesn't go the same route with this one. If I do try it out, it will be for the PC though.

I played FFXI for a few years. I didn't like how you had to have a party to level up or explore most of the world or do like 90% of quests. If all I had was a hour or two to play thats no time at all exspecially me being a WHM. Found parties quick but if I had to leave I would fele guilty because there were few around. The sequel needs to have more solo oppurtunities. As far as Square-Enix going multiplatform. I have vented and come to terms and I honestly don't care anymore. FF XIII looks epic. i will buy it. And if I can get DSL out here or if I go to college I will get this game "rage".

i really really wonder if its FINAL FANTASY XIV or not. cus if its to be taken as seriously as FFXI then you would think its a real FF in the main series and not a spin off or another new game all together. but at that time FFXIII wont be out quite yet.
