Final Fantasy XIII-2 features harder boss battles

Final Fantasy XIII-2 director Motomu Toriyama has confirmed that the hotly-anticipated RPG sequel will feature tougher boss battles than its predecessor.

Speaking to Dengeki PlayStation (via Andriasang), Toriyama and FFXIII-2 battle director Yusuke Matsui revealed that players who are having problems beating bosses should opt to lower the difficult to Easy Mode.

However, if this still doesn’t help, Toriyama instead suggested gamers give up the ghost for a while and press on to another scenario.

Elsewhere, they also touched on the Monster Collection system. Apparently, the same creatures will sport different growth parameters; some grow fast, while others take their sweet time to evolve.

Players can also kit their monsters out with various accessories to change their physical appearances, some of which may not fit in with the Final Fantasy universe.

FFXIII-2 also sees the return of the Paradigm Shift mechanic, though this time around gamers can change between Paradigms instantaneously. This, the developers say, is designed to tackle issues of pacing in basic battles, since they’re more focused on speed.

For boss battles and scraps against rare creatures, however, players must switch Paradigms in a more strategic manner. Fortunately, the game will save your paradigm combos for easier access.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 is due out on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the U.S. on January 31. Europe gets the game on February 3.
