Circana’s Mat Piscatella has revealed that only seven PlayStation games released year-to-date have managed to sell more than 100,000 copies in the US, reflecting changing consumer trends as the vast majority of people now purchase games digitally.
In addition, Piscatella revealed that, referencing data from Circana’s Retail Tracking Service, that only two PlayStatin titles for the week ended July 11 sold over 10,000 copies on physical disc.
Sony recently announced plans to cease production of physical game discs on PlayStation in January 2028, causing major backlash from console owners. Sony hasn’t issued any form of statement in response to the criticism, and if you’ve been following the company’s social media posts, users have been flooding the comments section attacking the format holder’s decision to scrap discs.
Jade Pearce, the CEO of independent retailer PNP Games, kicked off a petition earlier this month which quickly reached 200,000 signatures, and while it was critical of Sony’s decision Pearce noted that it was “not against digital,” but rather against the fact Sony is only giving us digital as the only option.
Meanwhile, Shawn Layden, the ex-chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios, responded to the decision by stating that he doesn’t necessarily agree with Sony’s move, but suggested it was maybe “just too prohibitively expensive to stamp out discs.”
