Build A Rocket Boy, the studio behind last year’s critically panned MindsEye, has filed for administration following a series of layoffs at the company over the past few months.
The studio, established by former Grand Theft Auto developer and Rockstar veteran Leslie Benzies, confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that Opus Advisory Group is serving as its administrator. This indicates that the MindsEye creator is insolvent and needs protection from legal action brought forward by individuals and organisations that it owes money to.
In terms of financials, the 12-month period ending September 30, 2025 reveals that Build A Rocket Boy posted an operating loss of £47.5 million and £36.2 million net loss, and owed its creditors £61.8 million as of that date. Prior to the layoffs last week, Build A Rocket Boy reportedly laid off as many as 170 people at the studio. Prior to that in March, its publishing collaboration with IO Interactive had come to an end; this was preceded by yet more layoffs earlier that month.
MindsEye was released in June 2025 for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S, but was mauled by critics and players like due to launching in a poor, bug-riddled state. Build A Rocket Boy stated soon after the game’s release that it was heartbroken over the troubled launch, and revealed it was ‘working around the clock‘ to address the numerous bugs.
The game was quickly crowned the worst-rated game of 2025 up to that point, and by the end of June Build A Rocket Boy revealed it had started a consultation process that may result in numerous job losses. Benzies confirmed in July 2025 that the developer aimed to relaunch MindsEye at a later date.
