Free downloadable islands heading to Burnout Paradise

When we reviewed Burnout Paradise, we touted it as "the freshest racing experience in a long time." Things haven't changed over the past few months - no racing title has revitalized the genre in the way that Paradise has.

It was just announced on the official Burnout forums that downloadable content will be coming to Paradise. We'll be seeing several new cars available for purchase at the PlayStation Store soon.

Far more tantalizing however is the mention of downloadable islands which will arrive in the form of free updates. That's correct, no money involved.

"This bridge leads to what we reveal today to be the first in a series of islands adding to Paradise City," commented Criterion Games' Alex W. "And one more thing, the islands will all be FREE."

He goes on to tout the each island will offer "a different type of gameplay." Whether this means different from each other or different than the standard Paradise gameplay isn't clear, but we're certainly intrigued with either idea. We'll have more details for you on Burnout Paradise's free DLC soon.

    OOOH! OOH! YAY!!!

Actually when i heard island in a racing game I instantly thought of Track Mania Sunrise... where you do those in sane, gravity defying jumps and loops and stuff! I wonder if this "Different type of game play" is close to that?

psn id: gingo.... this is amazing, this has pushed criterion upto my third favourite devellper behind Naught Dog and Insomniac, can't believe they would pass up making money to release the islands for free shows that it certainly wasn't EA's decision

Different type of gameplay will probably mean different designs made for specific types of races.

And it's about damn time a dev came out with free content.  Even after a few years, new games still cost $60 and we pay for extra content? I think not.  Especially all those expensive songs on every Thursday update.  I'd GLADLY pay for DLC like new islands but no way should a song cost $2.  Try $0.50, profit-bastards.

Free! OMG they should do this for all games, jk, then they wouldn't make an extra buck after the game has sold
