"Fully robust" PlayStation Home this fall, says Sony

Sony’s Director of PlayStation Network Eric Lempel has said that PlayStation Home’s upcoming open beta is still on schedule for release this fall, assuring consumers that its release will offer a “fully robust service.”
“The Home open beta is still on schedule for release later this fall,” said Lempel, during an interview with Next-Gen.biz
Despite numerous delays, Lempel was keen to point out that the open beta would be worth the wait, offering consumers a “fair” representation of the forthcoming online social networking platform.
Speaking in direct reference to Sony’s Susan Panico, who suggested that Home’s “rollout will be similar to Gmail,” and thus function as an "open, working beta,” Lempel asserted that Home’s public form would not merely function as a “0.5 release.”
“If you think about Gmail and Susan’s reference, Gmail when it launched in beta was a fully functional email service. I personally was using it and it offered everything you’d expect, but was in beta just to say that there’s more to come and maybe it’s not fully polished,” he said.
“The reason we’ve been delaying [Home] is so that we can deliver a high quality service that the users will enjoy. Even though it will be in beta, it will be a fair representation of what the service can be and its potential, so it won’t be a 0.5 release, it will be a fully robust service.”
Elsewhere, he also addressed the subject of Sony’s planned movie download service for PSN, though did not divulge any specific details in regards to a release date or pricing.
“I don’t have any more specifics right now, but like Kaz [Hirai] said, it will go live [in the US] this summer and I think it will offer consumers everything they’re looking for from us. It will offer everything they expect from us and probably a little bit more,” he offered.
Stay tuned.

Let's just not open our lips about release dates and windows that we can't even come close to meeting next time please. As good as Home may turn out to be, they should have just waited to go off rambling about announcements for it to be expected, until gamers could actually expect soon. Not at an E3 three years ago with multiple delays in the process.

Dont you guys know that an "open" beta is really nothing but an actual release? The term open beta means that, they'll release it, but it will still be going through testing from us and sony.

ya see, its going exactly the way i had mentioned earlyer this year i said something like "I THINK THE LONG WAIT ON HOME IS BECAUSE SONY WANTS TO GET it "n' MAKE IT JUST RIGHT an people kept complaining on the wait an i said "THE LONGER THE WAIT, THE BETTER IT WILL BE" and they were just basically stating that.

They should stop making announcements and talking about this until they are actually 100% ready to launch it. I am always in favor of delays as long as they serve the purpose of polishing things up. Haze, though, was delayed so many times and turned out to be nothing special. I hope the same thing doesn't occur with Home.

Im really looking forward to Home. Mainly so I can show my friends movies or video that I have on my Hard Drive. They come over to my crib, and watch a movie that I have on my Hard Drive. If that works in Home, thats all I will care about. Thats all I really need.

Right, they said it would be due out in spring. I don't like habitual liiars anymore than a company, organization or an individual person that constantly makes promises to me and breaks them often! Polished product or not they shouldn't make a statement thats in fact tentative and say it's concrete, unless it's the truth. WE the fans deserve better. If any of you irrational "SONY FANBOYS " don't think so, then you can get Fu??ed !!

Too Dave the rave and staude the home service was first announced in E3 2005. No one made a big deal of it though with games like killzone2 metal gear solid and a line up of other games like littlebigplanet and warhawk. but as far as it getting hyped that was last year but it was 3 years ago if u have been following it like me from the beggining.

Glad to hear it. Lets just hope its for real this time. To all the Home haters out there go F*** yourself. Let me make it simple for you. If you dont want it, don't use it.
@25 Companies make promises all the time and break them. It's not right and total BS. But guess what...That's the gaming business so get over it. If you want to make your voice heard then don't support a company with your dollars. If thats not good enough then maybe gaming isn't for you.

They have had plans of this type of network since PS2 days. The idea of "Home" has been in the works for over 5yrs. My only concern is what will it do to my PS3 if it doesn't work right?

@GODF4TH3R
If you are referring to the open beta scheduled for this fall then,it will be open for anyone to join, but it will be a first come first serve sorta thing, meaning they will have a specific limit on the number of users, but it will be open for anyone to join, unlike the closed beta in which the participants were exclusively invited to join.
