Future multiplatform titles to use PS3 as lead platform?

Sony has indicated that developers are likely to utilize the PlayStation 3 as their lead development platform when working on multiplatform titles, with games then having to be downgraded for consoles sporting weaker processors.
Speaking with Videogamer.com, Ray Maguire, Managing Director for Sony Computer Entertainment UK, commented, "I think we now have an install base which is big enough for any third party to want to develop for.”
“Now the decision making part of development is which do you lead your development on? Is it easier to lead with the most powerful, both in terms of AI and graphics, i.e. PS3 and then just remove part of the functionality for the processors that aren't quite as strong? I would imagine that's very much part of the thought process now from a studio development point of view,” he added.
For a prime example of developers using the PS3 as their primary workhorse, look no further than EA DICE's particularly lovely First-Person adventure game, Mirror's Edge.

@4 - I agree, MS won't let inferior products come to the EggBox.

but at some stage or another, people will stop buying games on PS3 that had the 360 as the lead when the difference between the two's power becomes more and more apparent, and at that stage the PS3 will become the lead for almost everyone i think.

Well I dont know it really depends of the game developers. The main problem has been the ps3 being a hard console to work on. Sony has to make the moves so developers are attracted more to it, deciding for the ps3 being the lead. Great processing power doesnt seem to cut it alone, they rather have to make the developing tools more userfriendly or give tech suppot to the developers.

Or it will be easier to develop for the easy one? Don't get me wrong, I love Sony and do not own an Xbox but Microsoft have done a great job making sure that even a ten-year old kid can develop a game on their platform. DirectX may not be great but it is quite easy to understand.
That's the main problem as I see it. Everyone I talk to on the indie-scene are making games for XNA and not PSN. I want that to change.

Look how well this thinking has got us this far Sony....90% of third party games have 360 as lead platform. It's simple, the 360 is easier to develop for and that won't change anytime soon. No matter how powerful you think your machine is if it's not selling more than the others and it's harder to develop for it will continue to be the red headed stepchild of the industry. I always support devs that lead on the PS3 but it will continue to be the exception rather than the rule. Too bad.

easier is not always better and money isnt everything, hopefully people wanting to make the best game possible will take the lead and these whores will stop buying cheap a ss sh it from ms. Its such a joke how can you have pride in ms and the box how? tell me please. oh I'm such an idiot I'd rather buy two systems than one, cause you know ms will have to make the 720 to keep up. lame

@9 never has there ever been any mention that the next xbox will be even called the 720 and if M$ is going to bring out another xbox in the next 2 or 3 years then I feel sorry for the people that bought the 360 because it means that M$ cant keep up the pace and just like the first xbox the 360 will die and correct me if I'm wrong but the PS2 is the big brother not the PS3 ;)

I know this guy works for Sony, but WOW this guy is a moron... If PS3 becomes the lead platform for 3rd parties then its good for the simple reason that the harder-to-develop-for cell will get the time and resources it needs to create a sick game... nuff said

every EA game is now lead on ps3 it was stated like a month ago that all future titles would lead on ps3, this is the best for all platforms really and is really not surprising

good cause ive always been wondering at times why couldn't developers just focus on about going BEYOND and FARTHER in the ps3's processor so that people could see how much power it has and how little microsoft's xbox has compared to it? OH wait microsoft isn't letting this happen when showing their $$$$$$$$$$ to developers.

ea is the only publisher/ creator to adopt this aproach because ps3 makes them more money and it takes less time (money) to port the other way around...this is the only reason. Its not because they actually think its a better console. examples: burnout, dead space, mirrors edge, need for speed....etc etc

Whenever a game is lead developed on the ps3,it ensures greater quality for ALL platforms, look at how good BurnOut and Mirror's Edge are on the 360,it's because porting from ps3 to 360 isn't going to result in quality loss unlike vice versa.

or just make games that will run at max on another console i.e. the 360, because therefore it will also run fine on a ps3. 3rd party devs arent going to cut stuff down for 360 owners or they will get pissed off obviously

There is a big problem here and that is to get most out of a console you need to start from the ground up. XNA dumbs down the dev process and prevents real innovation in hardware utilization. PS3 development goes the other way, by providing raw hardware features it allows the developers to generate innovative code. With XNA, this innovation is lost along with most of the power as the developers rely upon their knowledge of the SDK and not the hardware underneath ... PS3 developers will get more out of the console because thay are working directly with the silicon.
Although developers of novelty games will be able to quickly adopt XNA, professional big title devs need horsepower not levels of abstraction. Microsoft are trying to unify XBOX and PC development, Sony took a step back and decided to provide the best architecture for games development ... so as a commercial developer (albeit not a games dev) my argument is this ... PS3 will succeed because the Cell BE is designed from the ground up to accomplish the task at hand whereas MS are pushing an alterior motive (aka Vista & Win7) and don't be fooled into thinking that a 720 (or whatever they call it) will be any different.
