While Sony remained pretty quiet this year at the Game Developer’s Conference, one of the exclusive titles for its PlayStation 3 platform made a substantial appearance at the show.
At the “Technology of Final Fantasy” presentation today at GDC, the GM of Square-Enix’s Research and Development Division, Taku Murata, revealed the new name for the next generation game engine, Crystal Tools which is formerly known as the White Engine.
Crystal Tools:
- The first companywide technology platform
- Authoring tools and runtime libraries
- Allows photorealistic CGI to be rendered in real-time.
- Has advanced audio processing, cinematic cut scene transition, physics effects and other effects rendering.
Crystal Tools serves as the engine which will power up Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, and Square’s upcoming MMORPG which few details are known about.
Please continue to follow our GDC coverage as we have even more content to come, even into the later days of next week.

bnolan56, You might be right, but at the same time it is highly speculated that that part in the original trailer. I, personally, wanna believe that it is, but I need to see more in-game or in-engine footage of it.

wow dragon969atpsu, you really have no clue, the game engine has nothing to do with the battle system... the battle system is gameplay.. the game engine is just something that runs everything and sends messages to charaters for their animations, or the environments physics.... nothing to do with battle

@Duomtl now i could be wrong..but im prreetttyy sure physics and animations take place during the battle so essentially..yah..the engine has an effect on the battle system. without the engine the game would be lifeless..as would the battle system so you my friend are wrong... plus no need to down the poster....and its character*

lmao, wow Gameware336, it's funny how you said:" ... plus no need to down the poster..." when you blatantly put another poster(duomtl) because of his/her opinion. I agree with the opinions of duomtl; why would they have a classification for game engine and a classification for gameplay... i don't know maybe because they're different. oh, oh here is another funny one you said: "without the engine the game would be lifeless." WHAT!!! are you serious(sarcasm). lol. no excrement Sherlock. in essence what you're saying is, anytime someone use this engine the gameplay is going to be the same.
