Gran Turismo head honcho Kazunori Yamauchi has revealed he is confident that the upcoming fifth instalment in the legendary racing franchise will set a new industry standard for the genre.

Chatting to the official PlayStation Blog at E3, Yamauchi commented: “We always set very high goals and ideal for our games,” adding, “The [E3] GT5 trailer that you saw is a very small portion of what we’re working on.”

“As long as we actually achieve our goals and fulfil our expectations I’m sure it would set the new industry standard.”

The short but sweet interview can be viewed below.

Gran Turismo 5 has yet to attract a release date, though Yamauchi has previously commented that a firm date will be announced 'soon.'

@higgos22, remember the Ford Racing Team car in GTA4, that was wicked to thrash around the race tracks. I'm certain GTA5 is going to have a little for every country, there the best in the business.

I'll look forward to this one if they give me real time interactive realistik damage and better AI, bored of racing stupid cars which can't even avoid you and stay on the perfect cours without making a single error! With this, gt5 will be the best racing game ever, without this gt5 will simply be another beautiful but boring gran turismo!

I've never really understood what the point is with the damage, it's like some people only want to crash just to see damage on the cars.

*To above* in GT5P the cars do move out of the way but they aren't going to drive off the road because you can't avoid hitting them, or keep a proper racing line.

@12 i think the damage is important for a couple reasons. first, the competition is doing it in their games, so im sure they have to keep up with the others, even though gt dosent have to keep up with anyone. the main reason, for me anyway is, its more realistic and makes the players take it serious. im sure some people would just drive fast and hard, not caring if they slammed into a wall because they would just bounce off, now people will be more alil more careful.

GT5 is just now catching up with what was in the original Forza:

    Specifically...damage modeling

    ...effects of damage on performance

    ...online play

    ...custimization

There's going to be some damage inthe game obvously but lets not forget that the whole point of GT is to beable to enjoy cars you will never own. It's a simulator but it's also meant to be an enjoyable experience. if damage comes along and gets inthe way of the original intent of their design than it'll take a backseat. If they can do damage and still keep the game enjoyable without you having to cancel out of the game 15 times because one of the computer players is a road hog and slams you into guard rails than it's going to get very unfun very fast.

    HEY GUYS!! FIRST OFF:

look at the screens. when they show damage on likely real gameplay, it probably is part of the gameplay.

    AND HERE TAKE THIS!!!!!!!!

damage was in gran turismo 2.  That's right. It was.  It however was only in arcade mode, and one had to enable it in the options menu.  If you looked at the tire wear icon one would see little black boxes on the inside of each tire.  that is what displayed the damage. It only really affected the steering, causing the car to drive sideways.

And did forza have the sheer variety and honor of GT?  It is blasphemy to put a body kit on anything that costs more than 30 grand.

@26 & others who want damage

Why do you want damage? Is it because your bad at the game and crash o.O

Isn't the reason they don't add damage because car manufacturers like Ferrari won't allow it?

Probably because its so realistic so they don't want people to see the damage done to their cars as it would affect there sales.

GT prolouge was over rated imho.

firstly i hate the sound of the soo false screeching tyres. and the handling is totally off the mark. ive been in a few sports cars, and they handle alot better than them ingame.

If this game is supposed to be a driving sim then get the handling right and damage. ps i want to see failures if you thrash your car too much i want to see things break and cars suddenly burst into flames in front of you and vier off the track. thats the real world in racing. if they cant wont make them things happen ingame then it should lose the "title racing sim"

I guess some people don't want damage because they play too cr@p, I wan't realism, that means busting my car if I try to slam another car off the road, this makes passing cars more difficult and far more exciting. Didn't polyphony say something like gt5 was so wrapped up they can put it on sale, guess they want to work the hype a bit more. Luckily I've got grid to play with my g25!
