GTA MMO "very compelling," says Rockstar

A Rockstar Games online title featuring one gigantic city rampant with endless shootouts, carjacks, and fist fights on every corner – in other words, an MMO variation of Grand Theft Auto, which Sam Houser, founder of Rockstar Games, perceives as “the Holy Grail.”
Speaking to EGM, Houser commented that a GTA MMO "is very, very doable and is a very, very compelling proposition". Despite this, however, he also pointed out that a title of this scope would ultimately lack any relevance, other than to place thousands of players into one city with no purpose other than to just endlessly shoot each other.
So it would appear that no such project is being worked on at Rockstar; however, that does necessarily mean that the company may not seek out ideas and concepts which could allow a GTA MMO to be more persistent and relevant.
Grand Theft Auto IV, Rockstar’s latest project will feature online multiplayer, a first for the series. Details regarding this feature are largely unknown at this point, although more information is expected shortly.

I already read about this in the April EGM magazine. I have to agree that the game wouldn't really have any purpose if it was just hundreds of people shooting and blowing stuff up randomly.
It would be cool if you do missions in the storyline with friends while playing online, or it could be like Resistance 2 and have a separate campaign/story while played in co-op or online.
I really don't think that a game such as GTA needs online, it's almost kinda funny because nowadays developers are trying to figure out how to put online in almost any game. I really don't think that Online is necessary when it comes to games like GTA. But the idea of a MMO GTA would definantly be a cash cow.

I think it would be sweet to have servers accross the county act somewhat a cities where you can build reputation as gang or mob lords and you have other npc and acutal players and your body gaurds and subordinates. Other people could be given the assignment to assasinate other high rep players.
Another idea is that you can host your own little city with your friends with the same concept.

@ aclayPS3, what do you mostly do in GTA, have fun, blow stuff up, do whatever you please, and to do that with about 60 people in one huge city. Endless of hours of fun. Throw in upgradable weapons at certail levels, increase how fast you run, increased accuracy, how much you can carry, your strength, be able to rob stores and throw in acouple missions and you can have fun for years. GTA = Perfect MMO, in my opinion

Without a system of checks and balances a GTAMMO would become somod and gamora in 5 seconds and be interesting for about a week. People would log in get shot and run over by 15 cars in an insane car chase the minute they step foot inside and it would be tired and boring because everything there is to do you would do in the first day.
Now the smart thing to do is make the things that you do in GTA harder to do. lock picking minigames to steal cars, Fighting game to carjack someone. Make money harder to come by in order to buy weapons. You have to do jobs for people to earn money to do the things you want to do. ALL MMORPGs require you to work inorder to gain abilities why should this one be any different? otherwise just put a freeroam online mode on GTA4 and let someone host a room of up to 50 people and call it a day.
