Gabe Newell labels the PS3 a "waste of time"

Valve Software’s Gabe Newell has launched an onslaught of criticism towards the PlayStation 3, declaring the console a “waste of time.”
Speaking with EDGE magazine, Newell stated, "I think [PS3 is] a waste of everybody's time," adding, "Investing in the Cell, investing in the SPE gives you no long-term benefits."
"There's nothing there that you're going to apply to anything else. You're not going to gain anything except a hatred of the architecture they've created. I don't think they're going to make money off their box. I don't think it's a good solution," he added.
This isn’t the first time the outspoken Newell has disparaged Sony’s latest home console either, having previously branded it "a total disaster on so many levels."
Despite this, he noted the company is still on track for releasing the PS3 version of The Orange Box compilation later this year:
"I think the people who have The Orange Box on the PS3 are going to be happy with their game experience," said Newell.
"We've done the PC and 360 versions here and EA has a team doing the PS3 version – and they'll make the PS3 version a good product; EA got the job done in putting a lot of people with PS3 experience on the project.”
"But I think it's harder to get it to the same standard as the 360 and PC versions."

well this guy isnt part of EA, he is part of valve.
also, i think psu might have added the part about them saying it wont be as good as the 360 and PC versions becuz G4 didnt say ne thing about that part and they dont like the ps3, i think psu wants a flame war.

I just so happen to think that Orange Box will be a waste of my time, so I will not be getting it. Is he even serious, he is a developer making a game for a console and then he is gonna go and critisize said console. He has got some balls coming off as if he doesnt need the PS3. I cant wait to see what he says in about a years time after the PS3 takes off and never looks back.

I'm not gonna lie, the guy's studio puts out some awesome games but he sounds like a total noob to me. Personally i think HL2 should've been kept on the pc where it belonged, i don't see it feeling very good on either console. And what kind of idiot trashes the platform their very product is being released on?

It's not like Valve has the ability to make great games anyway. Orange Box will be mediocre at best. Unfortunately for him, when the best games are coming out on Sony's monster console, he'll be stuck making the lesser Half-Life 3 on the XBox. At least we have GOOD development teams like Rockstar and Team ICO working on the PS3... the Sony camp doesn't even need Valve.

I love HL2 and Counter-Strike: Source but Gabe is a total idiot. He says the ps3 is a total disaster? look at the Steam Platform and source engine, if anything they are the buggiest pieces of software that company has to offer. He criticizes anything that isn't PC

Below is the link to the interview on the Edge blog. I'm not a tech head so i don't know what the heck he is talking about. Seems like he got motivated to work with 360 hardware. Why can't he get motivated to work with the PS3. These developers need to stop complaining and start working. Next Gen is here people it's time to put down the Starbucks and get to work.

Everyone has their oppinion and thats just one. Leave it be - if you dont agree don't respond to it.
As for calling the guy fat or a retard or looser... This guy became a millionair before 20 writting complex commercial applications then stepped out on his own and has written three of the worlds top 20 computer games of all time, runs a highly successfull indipendent company "Valve" which is measured in the hundreds of millions and is respected by the hard core gaming community as he is not a poser. Having said that - he's making this comment as a geek, and he's not the only person with an engineering & programming background that has said that PS3 is hard to develop on. Maybe it is...
The real question is "whether its worth developing on PS3" and that question can only be answered by consumers who vote with their wallets. If the world thinks its worth it - then its worth it.
Valve are still pushing forward with Orangebox on PS3 - so whilst its a bit hard to work with PS3 - at least he's saying it's worth persisting. Its his money at risk and hes supporting PS3 so be happy - Gabe thinks its worth it. Thats better than what Namco is saying (like with Monster Hunter) - right?
Cut the guy some slack and dont take offense to Gabe's assesment of PS3 technologically as he is a hard core geek.

What a clot.. he should be fired so saying those things, and Sony should be the first to say "f*** you". History shows us that the PlayStation consoles are THE biggest selling consoles of all time, the past two.. only the second one outdid the first one, and now the PS3 will dominate.. thats fine if he doesnt want to be there when the money starts rolling in - I wont buy his games. It's a good thing they delayed the orange box for PS3 because now he's had time to ensure NO ONE BUYS HIS PEICE OF SHlT GAME. Half Life 2 might be "the greatest game ever" but there are other ways to get it rather than buying this box which a bunch of 36* owners have now told me that it's the only thing worth playing in the box. Team fortress with it cool "Incredibles" style movies might look awesome but the game play is apparently not as fun as halo which is the master of over-hyped. We're better off sticking to WarHawk.
