Game of the Month: March 2010

You’d be hard pressed to find someone who disagrees with the notion that the first couple of months of 2010 have proven nothing short of impressive. With early delights such as Bayonetta and MAG further supplemented by the likes of BioShock 2 and Heavy Rain, PlayStation 3 owners have been truly spoilt for choice during a period that PSU Towers considers, unequivocally, the strongest start to a year the platform has witnessed since its inception.

March has proven the best of the bunch so far, churning out two massive sequels, namely Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XIII and Santa Monica Studio’s God of War III, the latter of which is exclusive to Sony’s black box. Aside from that, there’s also been an ample selection of other highlights, including but not limited to Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition, Just Cause 2 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2. All in all, not too shabby.

Still, as always, there can only be one receiver of our Game of the Month accolade, and in this case, the decision was unanimous – God of War III earned it hands down. Boasting meticulous visuals, gripping combat and stunning set pieces, Kratos’ swansong proved every bit as good as its predecessors and even managed to surpass our own lofty expectations. If you need further convincing, however, just take a butcher’s at what we had to say on the game in our review:

When the game finally ended, we were left with our jaws on the floor, completely blown away at what we had witnessed. Jamming this enormous and epic story into three games was no easy feat, but somehow Sony managed to do just that, and so much more. God of War III absolutely dwarfs the first two games – and that’s saying something. The environments, story, and bosses are positively jaw-dropping, while the incredibly fluid action and combat will keep you wanting to put “just 10 more minutes” in before calling it a night. All other action-adventure games pale in comparison to this gigantic endeavor – with God of War III comes a very, very high bar for every other game to rise above. Let’s just hope we haven’t seen the last of Kratos and his gory escapades.”

Join us again in a month’s time when we will be picking our Game of the Month for April. For now, why not indulge in a spot of God of War III? And if you haven’t already got it, then what are you waiting for?
