Gran Turismo head honcho Kazunori Yamauchi has dropped a couple of tidbits regarding the upcoming fifth instalment in the popular racing simulation franchise.
Speaking during a mini-interview concerning the relationship between the Audi R8 and Gran Turismo 5, Yamauchi confirmed that the sequel will feature improved visual effects, including weather changes and night time racing.
“We are also working flat out on a realistic graphic representation for rain and night,” he noted. More importantly, however, Yamauchi also reiterated that car damage will be present: “And damage to racing cars, we will soon be able to simulate.”
Gran Turismo 5 has yet to attract a solid release date, with recent reports pointing to a late 2009/early 2010 launch. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available to us.

Oh man have i been waiting for this to come out, it must be THE longest release time of any game in history, still that is probably mainly down to its massive content, superb graphics and realistic physics etc, as this dev team certainly try to pull out all the stops.

@4
If we are to be believed Gran turismo 5's production began before they finished work on GT4, which was released in 2004. Far from me to suggest that Polyphony are dragging their heels over this one but it seems to me that by the time this game is release (if its released) we'll be playing it on the PS9 and all be driving around in hover cars. We've seen nothing of this game and quite frankly things have moved on massively in car games the 360 has had PGR3 and 4 as well as Forza 2. Meanwhile we've had prolougue, not good enough!!! Polyphony have more resources than any other Sony developer and have produced zero this generation, because lets face it GT5:P was nothing more than GT4 with prettier graphics. The length of time this game is taking is farcical, any other publisher would have pulled the plug long ago or made changes at the top of Polyphony to ensure an expedient release.

@13 I feel your frustration but Polyphony are different to the usual racing game developers. They have a true passion for the cars the are replicating on the game, they want to do them justice. Its not just about making it do, its about getting it perfect! They are lucky that Sony are allowing them the time to get it right and not forcing them to cut corners like other companies might. When this game comes it will be unsurpassed (it better be!!), you will forget anything on the 360 ever exsisted, and the wait will have been worth it.
Until then you've got all the other racing games that are average at best for this generation to tide you over.

@Dimpoc
My frustrations might not come through that clearly. Personally I think Polyphony have less excuses than most for this game taking so long. They have a wealth of back data from previous GT's and as I've said unparalled resources, weather, damage etc. etc. have all been done by other teams in half the time. People keep on talking about perfection, firstly its unattainable and secondly Forza and other games have surpassed GT on so many levels thus far I'm losing interest. For me Polyphony and Sony have really dropped the ball on this one its taken them so long to develop and so long to get it out that they're probably stuck in a tech upgrade cycle, in short they're behind the curve. They're taking too long to implement things and other teams are being quicker and nimbler and beating them to the tech punch and then they have to play catch up and then someone else innovates. Its a cycle that has happened to many times in the industry and led to too many no shows and too many dissappointments... Duke Nukem anyone?

Nice to hear this. Although previous GT game`s have had nighttime races havent they? obviously not to the extend of what will be shown in GT5. (hmm cant wait... hammering along the nurburgring, headlights blazzling a light path to the crash scene at the first corner.. car write off !)
E3... i reckon (hope) they`l show some vid`s possibly a few new level`s to play/download & also perhaps crash damage implementation into GT5P.

@ 20 u think you know but u dont know squat! lolz! Good Games Take Time! Great Games Take Huge amount of time! When You build a Game with as many features and everything in it is being simulated... It takes time to build a freaking engine so that what you want in the game could be SIMULATED! Example: You Have to study every single cars reaction when several terrains are wet, snowy and dry, you have to build an engine with that data and trust me it REALLY TAKES TIME! We are talking about a SIMULATION Game! Which Seeks URM!! REALITY!
This is no arcade game my friends this IS the REAL DEAL! Racing Games Looked @ Gran Turismos Succes Back in PS1 In order To copy PAste and Improve and still theres nothing better than the original! True Forza has been a good contender with features that GT should have! But still Forza does not play as true to life as GT! It is like the iPhone! Ever since it came Out every company wants a Touch Screen phone with better features but guess what! There is Nothing Like The Original! SO please! Relax! Take It Easy! trust Me You Dont Wanna Eat a Half Baked Cake! lol!

I know a little bit more about it than you evidently do. I've worked in the industry as I'm sure I've mentioned before on these pages. checking every car against every weather condition come on please that's no where near the truth. Reality is if you build a game engine on physics real world or otherwise and give each object or actor within that build a a physics value the engine itself should take care of itself. So please don't talk such tosh, I know plenty of people who still work back at SCEE and they think Polyphony are taking the p*** with it. they've seen nothing and there are rumours two builds of the game have been scrapped because of what the competition has achieved. So you'll forgive me if I don't subscribe to your view of things. Yes great games take time, no question, but I doubt GT5 will be anything special if it ever comes out. I know for a fact there is aniomosity from some within SCEA that they seem to be carrying the PS3 this time around and that Sony need to stop mollycoddling Kazunori Yamauchi and indulging him. Wheres the PSP GT game? GT games would've sold PS3's and may still do so but genuinely its a joke its taking them so long... actually can anyone name a triple A game from SCEJ this cycle? They're all from SCEE and SCEA. Trust me there is animosity inside some quarters of Sony at how rediculous the protracted development cycle is for this game. KZ2 was long but by God GT5 is making it look miniscule.

Thats the point isn't it? You or I don't have GT5. I just hope they show something concrete at E3, I want in game footage and lots of it and a release window, like Q4 2009 or h3ll even Q4 2010. It's be a start, because if they keep tweaking little things new cars are released every year new games released on a monthly basis. Polyphony just need to get on with already. I was genuinely talking to someone who works at a UK developer the other day about a racing game he was working on and we started on about GT5, bith of us are genuine GT fans but unless they show something it could be vapourware for all we know. I'll believe it when I see it.

One thing GT fans should already know about Polyphony is that eve if there is a release window you can pretty much expect it to be six months after that. So if we do get a date or timeframe at E3 don’t think much of it. It most likely wont hold. -

Wouldn't it be weird if they DIDN'T have rain/night racing ?
I mean, is that something to really be impressed by these days? If they don't flat out nails the on-line experience, with private leagues and races along with massive community support on more platforms than the the PS3, I don't see any point of this game.
Yes it'll look awesome, but all games do.
Yes it'll have nice physics, but there are more games that have that.
Other games nowadays, are fun, spectacular and have great on-line features. The only thing GT5 will have going is 600 cars or whatever and the tuning options ... I
f that is what you want, then I think it's for you. If you want a fun good racing game to compete with other people out there, there will be plenty to choose from.

I'm very excited for Gran Turismo 5 but I'm honestly willing to wait till 2011 for the full game since there will be many great games coming out before it so I would let them keep working on it to make it much better (and to make sure Forza cries in shame next to this game.)

WELL YES YOU BUILD AN ENGINE TO SIMULATE "LIFE" BUT THIS IS PHYSICS MY FELLOW POSTER AND YOU NEED DATA! REAL LIFE DATA! I DONT KNOW HOW YOU DEVELOPED GAMES IN THE PAST, AS FAR AS IM KNOW YOU ARE HERE DODGING BULLETS INSTEAD OF WORKING ON THE NEXT MGS! YOU NEED MORE THAN MATH TO MAKE AN ENGINE FOR A REAL SIMULATION GAME! AND THAT IS REAL LIFE DATA! IF YOU DONT HAVE THAT DATA... WELL YOU ARE NOT SIMULATING ANYTHING ;) I DOES NOT TAKE AN EINSTEIN TO FIGURE THAT OUT! THIS IS WHY MANY DEVELOPERS NOWADAYS USE MOCAP... TO GET REAL LIFE DATA! SO THAT CHARACTERS MOVEMENT FEEL MORE LIFELIKE... THAN ANIMATED ONES AND THAT IS A FACT!

Jesus its like no one on this site is even the slightest bit educated. Data, hmm let me think, is gravity a constant? Erm yes. Does pyshics have its laws? Erm yes. Sorry buddy if they want real world data go to the manufacturers, erm like they do. They're not driving cars around tracks themselves and if they are they'll learn NOTHING for the game. No body knows any car like the people that built it and I think you'll find the reason the original GT on the PS1 was so well recieved and so blisteringly revolutionary was that some how Polyphony managed to convince manufacturers to give up all their data, and no one else prior to this had managed it. Besides the point stil stands, they do not need to test every car and its modifications against every weather affect. Perhaps you don't understand you muppet if your rain is modelled accurately and consistently and so are your road surfaces and cars then guess what your games engine "should" take care of it. That's my final comment on the matter as you clearly wouldn't know how to develop your way out of a paper bag and trying to educate you on why what you're saying is utter nonsense would take a couple of lifetimes.

ok #49, obviously is not that big of a fan if he doesn't know Yamauchi does drive cars to gather data on cars and tracks, has done so since GT. And Sony would not cut him short because, he is good pr for sony at SEMA and with top car co.s worldwide. So i guess microsoft has big rocks for people to hide under, forza! how's the view under there? Why the rush? *cough, EA cough*
