Guerrilla Games on Killzone 2 controls: "No changes required"

Guerrilla Games’ Seb Downie has defended the company’s decision not to revamp Killzone 2’s controls, describing the sequel as “a weighty, slower, more tactical first person experience.”
Speaking in response to complaints posted on CVG’s forums, Downie commented, “After carefully looking into this, reading the posts, talking to a lot of you directly and analysing the controls at GG we have come to the conclusion that there are no changes required to the system.”
"If at all, any changes to the controls would put the majority of people who have not had problems or have adapted out of whack, which may be more serious," he continued, adding, “Killzone 2 is a weighty, slower, more tactical first person experience that focuses on immersion.”
Despite this, Downie noted that a few tweaks were made to the game’s online component: "It is not a twitchy, split-second gun-wielding experience like some shooters. Also, the online experience is quicker as we've made the controls and animations a little faster during design."

HHmmm not so sure, i STILL find it difficult to lock onto enemies after several hours playing, especially when the action is FAST like it is most of the time (someone please tell me where the slower tactical bit is)
I must admit that i have spent ages playing both COD MW and WaW so you could argue that im honed in on COD controls but it doesnt normally take me this long to adapt.
I just seem to find the movement a bit wayward and the way the AI move around all the time you really need something a little more precise. I have tried adjusting it but to no avail
Maybe i just need even MORE practice

It's suppose to be that way and it adds a bit of realism to it to be honest.

well i always liked the controls. The only thing they need to add to make this game perfect in my eyes is split screen and party system, because i wanna play with my friends on the same team.

the only complain ive got izz that when u zoom in while covering... when the character gets the chance to reload... you have to press the zoom in button again! and the sniper rifle to adjust form 2x to 5x and viceversa while covering izz another pain! other than that the game is perfect :D

I think the controls are spot on and instead of GG trying to make their game play like CoD I think it's not too much to ask to have gamers adapt to their control scheme.
My biggest complaint is that there's no co-op. You're with someone for about 80% of the game and with elements like getting/giving boosts to reach higher ground and the defibrillator gizmo that helps you revive your fallen comrades, it seems really strange that they wouldn't work in co-op. I'm still hopeful that they'll add it later as DLC. They'll just have to rework the New Sun ship segment and the part when Garza leaves you for a minute.
Still, there's no denying that this is the slickest and sickest game on the PS3 right now and will have just as much staying power as CoD4.

Well, my issue is that regardless of how I play, I have major issues locking on. Couple that with the lack of ammo, and it causes a lot of frustration. Also, the shotgun has too much range. I lost a firefight from roughly 25-30 ft (I know, videogame measurements huh).

I think the controls are fine. For singleplayer I use the default setup and for the multiplayer I use the Alt 2 setup and it plays fine. Everyone complaining about the controls need to stop playing and go play COD, a game that takes no skill to kill anyone.

@masonmcglasson
I've held and fired a real M4 rifle, and I can tell you It's light as a feather,
Weapons are designed to be "light and maneuverable" something Killzone 2 does badly I'm afraid.
Killzone 2 Isn't realistic (at least the weapons aren't)

They better not change the controls to satisfy the CoD and Halo fans out there. I played World at War a ton, and loved it. But I'm also pretty good so far at Killzone 2 as well (1.37 KDR). I love the realistic and tactical feel that KZ2 provides and I wouldn't want them to change it for the world.

@ posas
You know that the control setup for ALT 2 is pretty much the COD setup. I prefer this game to COD, to many noobs there and I like that you get negative points for suicides and team kills. It just takes a while to get used to it. To many people are used to just going around running and shooting, so ill give u a tip of the day * dont run, lol sounds stupid but it takes some time to stop running, if you think an enemy is close by just stop running and get ready to shoot him in the face!! instant kill!!

the controls should of been fully customisable. then there would of been no beef from no one. i prefer L2 to aim and R2 to fire but maybe that's cos i have those gioteck trigger add ons. this game is epic and there are only a few small things i would change, nothing major though, it's near perfect

Use the alternate 2 controls in the options! As for the character feeling heavy to move, i like it and it just takes getting used to. Dont change it GG your game is near flawless! I hate people whining about controls in games!! Stop bitc*ing!!

this is so stupid. if its slowwer then shouldnt the controls be more accurate then say cod or R2. THere not they are slugish and slow. which i dont mindthe low part I jst hate moving my analoge stick waiting .4 secs for it to start moving then letting go of the analoge stick and wait .4 secs for my player to stop moving.

I honestly believe that they should give us the choice of mapping the controls as we wish. I hate when games force you into a set list of contols they think will work! GIVE ME THE OPTION TO CHOOSE MY OWN! That doesn't break it for anyone, it just pleases us who are use to a said scheme and can implement it for best play results.

For christ sake, people, stop moaning and play with the control settings. If you like CoD controls, use Alternate 2 and turn on Zoom Hold. If it's too slow, adjust the sensitivity.
Above all else...ADAPT! Every game has different controls, and you adapt to them. This is no different. If you can't adapt, you're not much of a gamer.

Maybe its just me but i found it more accessable than COD... im not a big fan of FPS but got COD5 based on the reviews and COD4's praise (which iv not played yet) took me a while to get into and i died god knows how mnay times on the first level... Killzone 2 on the other hand... i managed to get through the first level without dying once... (not a reflection on the games difficulty cos it certainly isnt easy) the slowness just adds to the effect of carrying the gear... best FPS iv ever played by far...

(forgive my spelling)..... I dont understand whay it has to be so hard to aim acurat. I hawe no problems withe the slow tactical pacing and seeking cower, thats cool. But the AI mowes side to side al the time it's dificult to lock on to them, you hawe to whaist a huge number of bullets before you catch them. I dont think a god game needs to prov itself withe the controls, let the game take care of that, I just whant an enjyeble control to hav fun : ) I have my settings on alternet 2 and sensetivity to allmost full, just one stepp back. its ok, but not to satifactory. And again, sorry for my spelling. Its not my native lagnuige.

Really?! This is what people have to whine about?
I don't understand this issue whatsoever. I've been playing the game all weekend and I don't find anything wrong with the controls. I bumped up the X and Y axis sensitivity and all was well. The only thing that struck me as odd was melee attack mapped to L1 - something that took me all of 10 minutes to get used to. (I'm playing on hard and I find that the AI is aggressive and melee attacking is a life saver)
People complaining about the controls have probably not played a lot of FPS's.
Killzone 2 is an amazing game, particularly once you get past the first 3-4 levels. Only thing missing is coop. A game that has been in development for this long has no excuse for lacking a coop mode.
I'd rate the single player experience a 9 out of 10.

Well! Love or loathe the controls, the fact that there are a huge number of threads on a lot of forums being generated about this should suggest to GG that it IS most definitely an issue.
Were there any such arguments to this scale about the control when COD4 or WAW came out? I don't think so which kind of says it all, doesn't it?

ya the controls dont need to be changed . i like it because it actually takes some skill to kill other people not just whoever sees each other 1st wins. i think people are mad because they cant just run around trying to get kills they actually have to think. i like the pace of this fps better than cod or bfbc it allows for some crazy shoot outs . the only problem i have is the lack of a party system.

As far as controls, I changed the zoom similar to COD4 and I was satisfied. But I have to agree with Post #5 Crazystuff155. I wish they would have Slit screen, my buddies who comes over twice a week and play 4 player splitscreen were disappointed when I told them that KZ2 was only one player offline.

Whoever is complaining most likely wants some Halo type speed (or even COD4) and that ish is very annoying. I love the weighty type controls of KZ2 and it should never change. I've played all the FPSs and I didn't find it hard to adapt at all.
Also, props to GG for making shooting from the hip actually useful.....geez
