Heavenly Sword not possible without Blu-ray

Ninja Theory’s self-titled Chief Development ‘Ninja’, Nina Kristensen has admitted that the company’s forthcoming PlayStation 3 epic Heavenly Sword would not be possible without the added storage capabilities of Sony’s Blu-ray technology.

Speaking to CVG this week, Kristensen revealed that the firm had employed various compression methods in order to squeeze the game onto a 25GB Blu-ray disk, including the audio, which alone took up approximately 10GB worth of data. A single DVD, however, only holds 8.5GB worth of information.

"We have jam-packed the Blu-Ray disc absolutely full," she said. "We used compression all over the place. We had to be really judicious at the end with what was going on the disc and what wasn't.”

"I think it's one of those things - if you give us the space we're going to fill it with stuff. It means the audio can be of a higher quality and stuff like that. It all adds to the quality of the package”, added Kristensen.

Heavenly Sword casts players in the role of a gusty heroine named Nariko, who embarks on an epic quest of revenge against the invasion of a nefarious king and his army. The title of the game takes its name from an ancient weapon named the Heavenly Sword, which drains the life force of any mortal man or woman who bares it. Nariko is a member of the ancient clan who guards the sword from all adversity; however, after all are slaughtered by the invading King, she is forced to bare the weapon in a last attempt to quell the evil forces before the power of the blade ultimately claims her life.

Expect a full review of the game here at PSU as soon as we get our mitts on it.

Meh...Wasn't impressed with the demo, didn't/ won't buy, but love hearing that Sony took the right path using BD. Hope more developers start to realize this, and get over the crappy xbox and start learning how to get the most out of the PS3 hardware and storage space on a BD. Well done Ninja Theory

The gaming industry is very well aware that Blu ray is the way to go.. Now its up to these hard head movie companies to realize what is already the obvious..

This says more about the decision  by Sony to include Blu-ray as standard than the actual developers themselves.  This pretty much justivies Blu-ray all by itself.  However, if developers are already using compression technigues to fit games on Blu-ray then what does this say for DVD technology?  I think Blu-ray is here to stay folks so get used to it.

lol 6 hour game and not the best ps3 looking game, for those who have limited quality speakers like me who use the tv speakers wont even get that as an advantage, mgs4 will be an example of blu ray not this (this is only f MGS4 is longer then 20 hours atleast...should be).

PPL,6 hours is for people who have completed NGS perfectly on MASTER NINJA.The developers said that the game was 12-15 hours for average gamers. So don't think YOU can complete it in 6 hours, nor that you will be able to resist playing it all over again.

Why jam-pack when you simply can make a dual-layer disc?! WTF

    • 4:22pm BST - August 29th, 2007

I dont understand that at all???  10 GB of audio?  are you kidding me?  talk about a waste.  And from the demo, i didnt see anything so amazing it made me say "wow, to make a long game with graphics like that it will take the whole disc!"   If Bethesda was able to fit oblivion on the 8.5 GB discs, than the 8.5 should easily do the job of a 14 hour game.

As soon as I read this article I thought the very same thing as what 'Killercop' stated a few posts before this one. Why cram all of this game on to a single layer Blueray Disc when they could of used a duel layer disc instead? Seems strange to me.

... come on, I like this game and can't wait to buy it, but lets be serious here. This guy wants us to believe that his short game could only fit on a blu-ray disc, get outta here!

why would anyone support or prefer hd-dvd over blu-ray? i mean blu-ray jus speaks for itself.

so what the players are expensive! jus go and buy yourself a ps3! lol nice job sony :)

I don't need an article every week detailing how *insert game here* couldn't have worked without *insert random PS3 technological buzzword here*. I think when people play MGS4 it'll be the first game that really justifies the Blu-ray drive. Heavenly Sword, a short single-player game, does not do a good job demonstrating Blu-ray's advantages.

they couldve just used a 50GB but im sure they wouldve if they couldve.

  25. Alpha2

    • 7:37pm BST - August 29th, 2007

I hope that didn't bump up audio at the exspense of the video. The opneing scene in the demo had artifacts like nobody's business. Also you can't just say "why didnt they make it a 50gb disk?"  when the process might not be stable enough or more expensive to manufacture them and may not yet be cost effective to start doleing them out. You know who's fault itll be if we jump to 50gb before it's ready and we start getting coasters for 70 bucks? it wont be sony's fault but you KNOW who everyone will blame.

"Bethesda was able to fit oblivion on the 8.5 GB discs, than the 8.5 should easily do the job of a 14 hour game. "  <----  Come on people Oblivion used PC based graphic textures which Heavenly Sword does not, so it was easy to fit Oblivion on DVD discs.  Heavenly Sword on DVD discs???  Let's not even think about it, that would be the same as putting a PS2 game on the Optical Discs that the Wii uses.  Do your homework.  PS3, it's in the box!!!

Audio almost takes up the mospt ut of everything its not a waste you would be surprised just cas you cant see it dosent mean it takes ups a small space and yeah i dunno i didnt like this game play very much to resitricted lol if you ask me i preffer a game where you can jump and lol falls off cliffs pressing a bunch of attack buttons and scambling for thigns to throw at peoplerelly dosent do it for me snd the whole button pushing thing to do spaicl things like run on a rope  just shows how limited the game play is in pleny of games you acturly have o use your skill to run on that rope not just have to be able to reac to button pictuers in time that simply makes a game that is old and unoriginal with a pretty litle movie to go with it > but feel free to go ahead prove me wrong
