Hirai: Third parties initially "confused" by PS3

It's no secret that the majority of third party PS3 games haven't been up to par with Sony's first party offerings. From minor things like the framerate in Madden to major game differences like the vastly inferior port of Blacksite: Area 51, third parties just weren't putting effort into their PS3 titles in the past. Kaz Hirai addressed this issue when speaking to MCV at PlayStation Day in London.

“I think there was some confusion as to what PS3 was initially – some of the third parties didn’t understand and they wanted to scale back a little and see how things went before they really put in their resources,” commented Hirai. “But when I re-positioned the PS3 as a video games console at Tokyo Game Show I think everybody got that message loud and clear.”

Things do look a bit brighter for multiplatform PS3 titles in the future as more and more studios are implementing the PS3 as their lead platform. Titles like Burnout Paradise and GTA IV have lead the way for the multiplatform titles of the future.

You aren't going crazy - our servers rolled back so the last 15 hours of content were deleted. It's a pain, but we're re-writing everything up again. Silly to not have back-ups of about half of it. Ugh.

I really enjoy how I can use my playstation 3 for Music, Movies, Internet, and most importantly Video Games. Its a wonderful device and I couldn't enjoy it as much as I have if it only played games. I love how I don't have to have a dvd player or cd player lying around. I just have one convenient device that serves all my media needs. And with System Updates, it continues to expand and become even better. I encourage anyone who doesn't have a PS3 to buy one right away, its not just a console..its a way of life.

I don't think it's as much about confusion of what the system is more than having to learn a new way of programing. It's seems to be a learning curve, and a heftier install base that Devs are dealing with.

Wait a second.....that just does not make the slightest bit of sense to anyone that can rub 2 stones together.

What didn't the developers understand? That it was a gaming platform?

Or did they not understand why the PS3 was not being promoted heavily as a gaming platform, leading tho their uncertainty to its future for gaming?

Just what are you trying to say Mr.Hirai?

Oh and well done for crediting yourself with setting the developers straight..lol.

Somehow I don't think any words of Mr.Hirai's would have influenced developers to take their fingers out of their rears. What influenced them ( if they were influenced at all) was the simple fact of increasing install base. And yet this isn't good enough for many developers still.

Not to mention the fact that it wasn't just the install base, but the actual difficulty they have been having creating titles for the PS3....it takes time to work things out....if they even put in the effort in the 1st place.

I think this statement from Mr.Hirai is just a confidence booster for the public to be honest, as it doesn't really account for the real facts.

But alls good if it means the PS3 is gaining more and more support ( proper support).

I thought that the lead platform for GTA IV was the 360? He said it was the PS3. Was it lead on the PS3 or is he just trying to say it plays better on the PS3?
