Home abusers could face banning, says Sony

Consumers who consistently abuse the use of Sony’s forthcoming PlayStation Home service will be heavily reprimanded, potentially leading to the banning of their machines from connecting to the Internet, revealed Home director, Peter Edward this week.

Speaking at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival, Edward noted that such an action would effectively mean the user would "have to move house and buy a new PS3 before they could get online again. Ultimately we know a users details, we know machine details and we know where they live," he said.

"Clearly that's not something we would want to be doing very often but as a disincentive to mess round too much it's in our power," explained Edward. “If you really feel like you've been abused or that someone has just shown wholly inappropriate behaviour then you are able to complain about it. If you really, really misbehave you can have your console disconnected at a machine level, so you would actually have to move house and buy a new PS3 before you could get online again."

Edward highlighted that the company does not aim to pursue a “virtual police” mentality to flushing out abusers; as such, he stated that it is crucial users decide for themselves on the seriousness of any potentially disruptive behaviour, allowing them to then file a complaint if necessary.

“It's a hard line to draw because we don't want to be walking around telling everyone off for saying 'bloody' so we've got to strike a balance there”, he continued. “We're going to be relying on users assessing what's appropriate to them – if they've been subject to behaviour they don't like they can complain about it rather than we walk around as virtual police."

Concluding, Edward stated that the company aims to include a number of environments that are specifically catered to the over-18 demographic; despite this, however, he observed that some particular brands or materials would not be included regardless of age.

"It's relatively simple to be confident that somebody is over 18. So it's no problem to have areas that are only open to those aged 18 years' and over. We are able to do that quite comprehensively, we have access to the log-in data that they use for the PlayStation Network," revealed Edward. "Undoubtedly there are going to be some things and some brands that we are not going to want to be involved in the environment at any stage.”

"But a large proportion of our demographic is over 18 so we will make a point of catering to that demographic – we certainly don't want to dumb everything down to the lowest common denominator," he concluded.

Stay tuned for more information on PlayStation Home as it becomes available.

Stuff in our own house is up to us though right? Say having innapropriate pictures on your wall that some random person visiting your house is offended by won't get you banned right?  I don't personally plan to have porn all around my house but i think it should be up to me if i do

just as long as there is a warning system, and not left entirely to users, cause i know some people that would constantly complain to get people booted just for fun.....

A complete ban is way too serious for minor infractions.  Probably what will happen is multiple warnings, followed by a temp ban/priviledge revoked (ie. maybe you can't type or use your mic for 2 weeks),  followed by a longer temp ban, and then an IP ban/PS3 ban.

GOOD.  honestly, they said it themselves, they won't be banning people like crazy; so you wouold have to be crude, rude, and on multiple occassions for them to ban you.

I am sure that the online banning is a very extreme measure, they will more than likely resort to a temporary ban, or a good online scolding.  Maybe even a chance to appeal, or what not.  I am sure it will be a very extreme measure.

All I can say is be polite and couteous to others that you don't know and you'll have nothing to worry about.  They do need strict guidelines to keep people in check.  Anyways, I hope they have a warning system for people who want to enter other people's homes who have mature content in them.  I'm not going to hide my porn just because some little kid walks in by accident and gets offended.

  24. jrlcgmx

    • 4:10pm BST - August 14th, 2007

They should replace banning with unable to chat and talk through mic and such and make it visable that you are an abuser when you log in for a week or two.

I think this could go either way. Good or Bad. Obviously its serious so I dont think they will just kick of anyone for just being annoying. Must have a kind of warning system. 3 xxx's you're out (Pun intended) and also 3 times you're out. :) I think its a better idea to have members involved though and I'm confident they will screen every complaint. Home looks great to me not because of the socializing as much as being able to see more from all developers etc. Should be sweet!

    • 5:45pm BST - August 14th, 2007

This is really good. Really good.

Probably they will warn multiple times and use temp ban like 99% of all times but it is good to know that if there is some jackass that keeps being a pain in the *ss Sony will have the power to completely shut him down.

I do not want some god damn 14 years old kid who thinks he's just being funny ruin my Home experience in any way. Actually I would like some kind of block/ignore function too. That way I can ignore people without them getting banned. And I really liked what  jrlcgmx said about making it visible that someone is an abuser, but I don't think they should replace the ability for Sony to ban, cause you never know, they might need it.

Maybe they will only ban two people in the entire history of PS3 but that is totally up to the users. It's good that they have the ability to do that. And about shutting PS3 customers off I don't agree.. First of all a PS3 customer that is so annoying and stupid that he will continue to behave like a jackass after several warnings and temp bans then dude, he totally deserves a ban.

  32. Alpha2

    • 8:22pm BST - August 14th, 2007

I'd assume that anyone dumb enough to get banned like that would also be too dumb to simply change his IP address and/or sign in with a new name. Killing the system at the MAC address level is far too dangerous and over zealous especially when you assume that a person could try to report you falsely just because they lost a game ad get your system completely FUBAR'd.

  33. Atreides

    • 8:32pm BST - August 14th, 2007

I doubt serously that one single report would do it.  This isnt for ppl that cause a minor disturbance, or annoy a single person, this is for those PITA ppl, or cheaters, that need to be shut down.

Also Sony has the ability to log everything that happens, so they can verify that the report is valid and not a prank.

say if there are like 5 complaints all from different users then there should be a warning of your improper conduct, if 1 complaint from a 12yo noob gets u banned who's just complaining for fun then thats just unfair. i mean seiously sony said PS3 is a 10 year plan if they start banning users from 1 complaint thats just sad and there goes $600 that hardcore gamers paid and ones who'll be having fun is cheap ppl who waited till it went $300

I'm pretty sure they'd using banning as a last resort. Good for Sony tho because sometimes people just need booted. I really really doubt they'd ban you over swearing or something.. You'd have to be harassing someone or stalking them online or something I'm sure.

This is crazy coming from rootkit king Sony. It's more than just harsh, its a draconian rules given by a little dictatorship. Nore reason to hack any controls Sony has off ASAP.

This is a good reason why consumers would not trust a company like Sony with the keys to their media center. No company has the right to switch off your connectivity if you dont abide by "their" interpretation of right & wrong. Next if you criticise Sony you'll get banned. Seriously there are some clowns at Sony who sit around all day think of ways to sink themselves- come on get it together please...
