Hot Shots Golf 5 to have mandatory install?

A lot of people took issue with the mandatory 5GB install that game packaged with their newly opened copy of Devil May Cry 4. In the end you could almost understand a game of that magnitude potentially doing that to you in order for you to get the best out of the experience, however, what about arcade golf?

Reports are starting to come to the forefront in regards to Hot Shots Golf which is due out a little over a month away. The game is being said to have around a 5GB mandatory install much like Capcom's DMC4.

With every system having a HDD, we guess it's not a surprise to see developers use them to their advantage by increasing the streamline capabilities of the game, unfortunately the mandatory install may start to seem like a joke after awhile. Obviously every owner has the opportunity to upgrade their HDD space, but what about the 20GB owners out there who may not have been able to afford to? If they're golf fans and devil hunter fans, they've now seen their HDD cut down to almost nothing.

Hopefully this isn't going to be a likely trend and the optional ability to install or not will be taken with titles down the line. We'll keep you updated as things happen.

I wonder if this is going to be the same with larger games down the line, like Resistance 2 and Killzone 2.

I don't mind an install but 5gb is too much.

It could possibly be. Most people forget, but the development process also takes into account the way the data is arranged for lower access timings. Oblivion ended up taking more than it did because it duplicated data across certain parts to make fetching easier and more efficient. However I see that mandatory HDD Installs as a way for developers taking the easy way out.

However I'll keep these statements as pure-BS opinions cause I know nothing about how the developers do their work when  arranging their data. Hopefully, developers still do their work on the BDs and still have an option do an HDD Install for the lesser-PS3 owners. I guess I can rationalize with Capcom a bit cause obviously if it helps the gaming experience, everyone's going to want to install a certain portion to get the best gaming experience.

I say people are just fretting over nothing cause the media used the word "mandatory", and nobody likes that word. Mandatory meetings, mandatory lunches, mandatory work. I call BS cause it sounds like FUD to me in the end. PC gamers deal with installing crap all the time and end up removing it. 5 GB sounds like nothing compared to installing Gears of War that takes at least 20 min for the uncompressing process.

For 20 gb owners...this is like having only 3 games + multimedia.  That sucks

5gb for a golf game? This is... how can I put it? Ridiculous!!

Sony just needs to step in and make all installs optional.  Not sure why they haven't already, or maybe they have already for the next batch, but either way this could become a problem if it becomes standard.  I've already upgraded my 20gig up to 250gig, but definitely would suck for those with 20gigers.

Thats dumb. I don't like the idea for even awesomely massive games but hotshots golf??? H3ll, if it keeps going like this gamers aren't going to be able to buy new games anymore without upgrading and when will the limit be reached? Who's to say that 3 years from now games won't have (requied disk space: atleast 22gb) on the back of their game cases?

I think the more data on the hard drive, the easier downloadable content and custom soundtracks (later on, of course) can be added. The data transfer off a BD is significantly slower than off the hard drive. I was fully expecting the games to install fully on the hard drive from the time the system was announced. I'd go so far as to say it'd be BETTER that way. With as easy as it is to get a new hard drive, and getting 120gb+ for under $100 easily, it's the cost of a few memory cards.

Have any of you forgotten that you can easily uninstall the game data and just reinstall it again when you need to? I haven't seen any that take too long to do this. I understand; however, that this is pretty ridiculous. Why do we need to have all these mandatory installs? I thought devs were figuring out the PS3? Hmmmm......

I can understand for a graphically based game like DMC4, but golf?  This is stupid.  The 360 can't do it but it doesn't mean it should be implemented on the PS3.  We're already paying $60+ for the games, why do we have to turn around and buy bigger hard drives because the devs can't figure out how to optimize a Blu-ray?  It's freakin DLC on a larger scale.  Pay full price for the game now and then pay more later.

Get the PS3!  After you buy a few games, you'll have to pay for a bigger hard drive too!

i will not buy ANY game that requires 5 gigs and over of manual install. it's not a very good idea to be doing this with so many games. I've only got 25 gigs left. that means I'd only be able to have 5 more games on my PS3. It'd better not be in games like Resistance or KZ2. This thing's not a computer. It's made to read to discs so we don't have to do that kind of bull.

Hot Shots golf is 5GB? If a game like that clocks in at that size, the 360 is looking at dual discs for sure. That seems a little large for a game like that. COD4 doesnt require a large install and that game looks a lot better than Hot shots golf.

As long as this cuts down on the loading times while I am playing the game then I am all for it. But it does suck for the people who bought the 20gb. Hopefully then can get an upgrade.

I'm sure that you can "uninstall" the game data as well and reuse it when you can. geez people learn that you 'the user' are entitled to such powers. You guys make it sound like you're on a tight leash. Uninstall the data when you're done and reinstall the data when you need it. Mandatory or not. Again, optional is a good word for "choice" but most of the time, people will choose to install it because they know they will get the best deal. Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was like this as well, yet no one decides to make a fuss till now?

Geez, I think this whole mandatory install mess is just a way for people to b**** cause they can. Grow some balls and make your own choices about what to put on there gosh.

i dont really care, because almost EVERY ps3 game has an install. Oblivion has a 4 gb install, and mlb 07 had like a 1.5 gb install, and heavenly sword and uncharted had some installs too. i agree 5 is a lot, but lets not make too big of a deal about this.

If the game will benefit from taking that HDD space I'm all for it, you can always delete it after you are done with the game. Problem solved.
