In-Game XMB and trophies confirmed for firmware 2.40

Director of PlayStation Network Operations Eric Lempel has posted a statement about the upcoming 2.36 and 2.40 firmware system updates on the Official PlayStation Blog, confirming improved system stability, In-Game XMB and trophies.
"A new PlayStation 3 firmware update (v2.36) will be launching soon, improving system stability when playing select PlayStation format software titles," wrote Lempel.
"We’re also happy to officially report that the 2.40 system software update for PS3 will include 'XMB' access in-game. The update will also include 'trophies,' an exciting new feature that we’ll be providing more details on soon, as well as some other new enhancements."
According to rumor reports the v2.40 firmware update was supposed to hit June 18, however seeing as that is tomorrow and firmware v2.36 has yet to launch, it's highly improbable. Stay tuned to PSU.com though for more information on future firmware updates and details.

@ Audiman
It will be next, next year. Ziinnnggggg!
Why does Sony wait until the last minute to confirm or release details about firmware? Why do they let all these rumors fly, and let people start to blame Sony for not providing something they never anounced?

So you are saying that Sony is responsible for wild and unconfirmed rumors?
The reason release date info is given out so close to the actual release is probably due to the fact that the software engineers are actively working on it. Firmware update/upgrades are not off-the-shelf items there are people coding and testing everything as they go from one revision to the next.

wow, that's a massive letdown. i was really anticipating 2.40 to be released today. oh well, i guess the positive is that in-game xmb has been confirmed, at least. So, in my opinion, v2.36 firmware will be released tomorrow. and then 2.40 will be released June 25 or 26th.

In game is most likely far away. If 2.36 is still on the way. They'll delay it again. Just like they did the games.

I'd say about another month or so to go before we get in-game XMB. I still wouldn't keep speculating on all the rumors like everyone likes to do. If the official Playstation magazine says the new firmware is going to be out in a few days, don't believe it unless the Playstation Blog is updated confirming.
Sony really doesn't delay things too much or put things off. Think about it. They are working on so many things at once, it really just seems like it. The majority of the things being delayed are third party multi platform titles, which Sony has no control over.
I admit, they do delay games and Home sometimes, but nowhere near the scale people make it out to be. It's all the rumor and speculation that you all throw out there that makes it seem like it. You say Sony delays Home when it was never announced for this time, or you say firmware 2.40 was delayed when it was never even announced for June.
Sony's doing an amazing job in their shoes, but there are definitely things they could improve on....
Edit: @ajabkhan
That's exactly what I'm talking about. Don't even think or speculate that FW 2.40 will be out in June at all, for all we know it's going to be released in 2-3 months. I don't understand you people...

If I sounded like I was blaming Sony for rumors, that's not what I ment. They do have employess that watch fan message boards and allow rumors to go on and on. They have to notice lots of people getting pissed at them for no reason and should set things straight. On their blog they have a recurring post that's titled "What we read this week". It's all about fan posts but they avoid the rumor department instead of heading it off before they get a bad name. (don't mind my misspelled words)
But I don't feel sorry for them since they do nothing to stop these wild rumors. Don't be jerks and wear "In-Game XMB" shirts and not even give us information about it. How hard is it to make an In-Game XMB the PS3 should haven't even be released without it. I think everyone thought that was a given. This is me just being angry now.

@CrapFactory
It is your opinion that in-game XMB should have been released at launch. You had the opportunity to do research, you would know whether it had it or not. If you knew whether it had it or not, and you still bought the PS3, then there's really no point in complaining. It was your decision to buy this product.
All I'm saying is that there's really no reason to be moaning about things Sony has and hasn't done. It's their product, and it's not very intelligent to buy a product you aren't satisfied with.
I'm also not saying you should think the PS3 is perfect and have no complaints with it, but there is certainly no reason to be angry.

Sony, Sony, Sony, *Sigh* They are just taking the p***. But I guess it is to stabilise the PS3 for the 2.40 update. Stability was the reason why it was held back anyway. Maybe, it wont be that long till we see the light of 2.40. [PSN ID: Y-Dawg ] Bow Wow

Something else they need to "improve" on, is Remote Play. I have videos and sports games I'd like to access when I'm away, but you have to have the right router, be a computer programmer, and have your masters in Rocket Engineering just to make the damn thing work. My PS3 constantly turns on by itself when set up to use Remote Play via the Internet, then it turns off those settings on its' own, just like it says it will do with certain routers. It would be nice to know from Sony, which router works, or if they'd just fix it so ANY router will work....geesh!

I've said tons about this. Just gimme the !&%@^$ update.
*To the complainers:
1) Remote play works fine. You don't have to be a programmer. Plain ol' Linksys router. $60 bucks new. Done.
2) Whoever said the router [EDIT: browser (not router)] is unusable is an idiot. I use it for Youtube, MLB.com, NFL.com, IMDB, Marvel.com, IGN, This site, and a host of others. If you are angry that porn doesn't work, get out more.

Excuse me? Since when has there been a delay of anything? It's more like, in-game XMB didn't come when we wanted it to so now we're going to pitch a little fit over it.
In-game XMB was never announced for this month, nor any other month. Therefore, it is impossible to be delayed.

you guys complaining about how sony keeps delaying 2.40 need to STFU because i don't remember sony setting a release date. The only official date they gave was a season, Summer. Summer isn't a date its a three month period where you should just shut up and enjoy some games (MGS4, etc.). At least they are listening, i didn't even think in game XMB was even possible but they are working on it and they just confirmed it, its amazing we'll be getting such an awsome update and for the very low price of free.

...You people complain way too much. This latest update is probably an update to stabilize in-game when it comes. Stop rushing the developers and let them do their freakin job. It makes me happy to hear that Sony finally responded to the iquires of in-game XMB. Also, stop attacking Sony. There was never a release date for in-game XMB. Sony did say it was coming out THIS summer. Not next year, not 2010, not 2012. THIS YEAR. This is just as bad as you people getting on like Sony doesn't have games and that's why they're delaying projects.

I agree with Girugamesh, Sony never promised to give us in-game xmb when the system started or even past that, its something that a bunch of people wanted because Xbox had it and they complained until they got what they wanted. And to call it a delay when they didnt promise a release date it the first place is just stupid.

@odium Remote Play do have a couple of issues, for me it erases the remote start settings all the time and also it sometimes erases the communication settings. About the Browser, not counting the well known memory issues that had gotten worse with recent updates, the flash player needs an update, they need to fix the cookies. I think it was better if it had Firefox or Opera.
