EDIT:  I just read this article again and there's nothing official in it.  So much for the celebration.

To Odium Sony actually annouced the "in game communication" would come in FW2.40, so it is sort of official, of course this is all speculation though.

Also that in-game xmb was annouced fakes ages ago, but i think is the only sort of picture we have :( Cant wait :D

why do ppl keep saying thats a fake screen?  Its from ratchet and clank ppl.  Ive got it up on that exact screen right now on my ps3 so its not fake (of course without the in game xmb).  With that said, I will not be holding my breathe because I think this is at least the 3rd time ppl have said that XMB IS COMING!!!  So if its true I will be very happy, but if its not, then I will move on and enjoy in-game messaging with my xbox.

Testing if xmb is fully compatible with the library of games? I didn't think it had anything to do with the game itself. The way I thought the 360 did it was just to pause the game and it was the console itself that ran the game in the background while the user messed with custom tracks etc. in the foreground? I always assumed this would be the same for the PS3. While the game is paused in the background the PS3 OS would do the job of running the custom sound track?

There's a high probability that (if this report has any truth to it at all) some games own features like ingame messaging and custom soundtracks would be redundant or cause a conflict. That's what I think they mean by testing for compatability. If you're playing Super Stardust HD with It's custom music option and then turn on the PS3s XMB version  would it crash the system, wipe your hard drive or just play two songs at the same time? This is what testing is about, finding out if these thigns would be an issue.

As for "doin' it like Micro$oft" cant we please think outside of the stupid "Box" Just because they're both next gen systems dosent mean sony wants or even CAN do it the same way, they're different hardware their companies hold patents on different operating system designs. At any point M$ could claim Sony was ripping them off if the XMB worked ANYTHING like the dashboard and the last thing any of us wants to see is a direct legal battle between the two that could go longer than the lifes of the hardware itself!

How about a in-game screen capture as well if your going to add a in-game photo viewer

You know what they say about things that are "Too good to be true"...

This is waaaaaaaaay overdue and Sony better not delay again.  Not being able to play my own music in games and having to quit a game to check a message and add friends is really a pain in the neck.  I'm not a programer, but I would think this would have been an easy thing for them to do...especially compared with the other things they put into the system.  What in God's green earth was with the holdup? 

finally it seems like we have been waiting forever for this so good news all around

Guys, you should all calm down a bit...
 

It would appear...
1.  Custom soundtracks must be supported by the game developer.
2.  Trophies must be supported by the game dev.
3.  Voice (& video) chat must be supported by the game dev (work across games?).
4.  YouTube uploading must be supported by the game dev.

What we'll really get to see and use immediately on the 10th June then is...
1. Ability to check / write messages without leaving the game.
2. Ability to have & modify a huge (universal) friends list for games to access.

This all makes a lot of sense because voice chat, video chat, youtube, etc, functions require system resources that the game you're playing will need to reserve & game developers need to plan for that.  Its a bit much to expect tasks such as voice chat & custom soundtracks to run in the background (on 1 reserved SPU for O/S) on games that currently know nothing about it.  Keep in mind the existing voice chat feature is an application in its own right and Warhawk was recently patched to improve voice chat - probably all for a good reason.
 

The 2.40 SDK is supposed to be released to 3rd parties in late June.  On that basis, you probably shouldn't expect to see 3rd party games with the 2.40 features before Sept.  1st parties have already been given the 2.40 SDK, so Warhawk, WipEout HD, LBP, Resistance (2), Motorstorm (2), GT5P, other PSN games, etc should all be either okay / patched.  I'm sure just about every 360 fan boy in existence will be jumping on how all this stuff should have been on the PS3 from day 1, but going forwards, it is still a good thing for the PS3 & the right thing to do for the rest of the year and following years!

I'm shifty on this one. sony is giving a lot of let downs lately. in january i heard that it would be in June but not with full features. it would only be in game chat. I'm not getting my hopes up because it could be later this year with all the serious big title's that sony has all their hype about. but it would be a boost fo them since the Home let down.

As every other update (except 1) has been released on a Tuesday, so i'm guessing the idea of the 18th isn't going to be right, so i'm hoping for a release on the 17th!

And my guess is, by universal friends list, they mean u have no limit to the number of friends you can have, either that or u can be PSN buddies with aliens!
