Japan may receive larger hard drive

While Americans are enjoying up to 80GB of hard drive space in their PlayStation 3’s, most people around the world only have the option to get as much as 60GB. Well, it seems that Sony has heard the cries of the masses and is currently contemplating a possible hard drive solution.

Sony has not flat out come and said that they are going to increase size for sure, but Japan's Corporate News are reporting that the company plans on "boosting" hard drive space in Japan. The company is also said to be listening closely to the consumers demand on this subject.

The news report has only specifically mentioned Japan on the receiving end of this upgrade, but if this larger hard drive option becomes available, it shouldn't be too long until it is available worldwide. Be sure to check back for more announcements here at PSU.

Dont know what the fuss is about, if you want more space go buy a bigger HD and whack it in, its not as if you are stuck with the HD that came in it when you bought your beautiful black box of tricks

richkaos: Yeah, that is a good point, but not everybody that owns a PS3 knows that it can do it/ will do it. They can't do it if they don't know about it.

Jesus when will they actually learn the HD size isn't the reason why the damn thing isn't selling???? Its the fact it costs an arm and a leg. The sooner they can reduce the costs of producting the thing and pass that onto consumers the better as far as I'm concerned. SCE need to get their damn priorities straight or they'll end up with even more consoles clogging up the shelves!!! THe lunatics really are running the asylum.

This is sad. Why all the fuss over 20GB? It's just 20 GB!! Give us a 300GB or something. Better yet, just let us put our own 300GB HDD in ourselves.

    100GB! I can already see it =).

They'll also drop the 60GB's(In Japan) and the 80GB's(In U.S.) price to $499, it's just a matter of time.

why on earth do they bother? the HDD is easily replaceable. but i suppose people are just lazy, and ignorant. as in most would probably end up breaking their PS3 replacing the HDD. but whatever, im fine with my 60gb version, and will buy a 250gb+ HDD when i feel like it.

PS. If youve ever read your ps3 manual, it has instructions for replacing the HDD...

I don't care, since I already got the 60gb, but that won't stop me from getting p!ss3d at them if they choose to release this new 'bigger' version and price it the same or more than the 80gb. I mean come the F#$% on, how many versions of everything are we gonna be satisfied with...100?!  Here's a secret that's not so much a secret, one version sells a h3!! of a lot more and better than 2, 3, etc.!

Why not just go out and buy a bigger hard drive for there system? thats what I am going to do and i have the 60 gig model.

There's a reason why they made it so easy to upgrade the HDD.  It only took me about 10 minutes to double my 60gigs.  They even explain how to do so in the booklet!!!!!  I think they should stick with what they have out, and then leave it up to the people to do what they please.  It's not rocket science......

How do people figure out which model of the PS3 they want if Sony are throwing about 20 choices in your face?

    • 2:32pm BST - September 26th, 2007

yeah how come I've been hearing theres 300gb HDD out there? the only one I could find was 250gb.

damnit when do they bring out the 1tb ones?

In some disrespects I kind hate technology--you by the 200gb one then 6months later a 400gb one is released at the same price you bought your 200gb, 6 months prior! whats with that!! arrh!

Technology you have to live with and you'd be stupid to live without it! - it's the only thing that contiunously sofisticates the human race.

    • 7:46pm BST - September 26th, 2007

lol. wow.... you can get a 750 gig for $200 USD.... why bother with this?.... whoever said this HDD cr@p isn't helping sales, i applaud you.... because actually most people want the smallest, cheapest one...

  22. debamf

    • 9:41am BST - September 27th, 2007

I installed a 160gb HDD and it cost me £54/$108 plus P + P I think that a better deal than paying $100 more for an extra 20gb. And think the price it will cost SOny to get the 160GB HDD in bulk? I think they should let the people know about upgrading their PS3's via emails or leaflets through the mail, and then release a 160GB PS3 for $100 more.

How great would it be if the core PS3 with a 160gb HDD cost $499 and the premium model came with a 250gb HDD, an extra controller, bluetooth headsets and a HDMI cable for $599? Thats what i would do.

Gotta agree with debamf, if they throw in a fair share of accessories, that would make it a far more inticing treat than just an hdd. good thinkin' dude.
