PlayStation Portable sales in Japan have doubled during the week ended December 16, with Sony’s handheld selling a total of 184,610 units and overtaking the Nintendo Wii.

Interestingly, the spike in sales cannot be attributed to the release of any new software or hardware bundles, with just three titles for the console managing to crack the top fifty best sellers in the region.

Elsewhere, PlayStation 3 continues to outsell its predecessor, PlayStation 2, both selling 63,720 and 18,025 units each, respectively. Nintendo’s DS remains on top of the charts in Japan with 222,144 units sold, with Microsoft bringing up the rear selling 8,561 Xbox 360's.

Stay tuned for more on Sony’s performance in Japan and the rest of the world as it breaks.

Cool to see PSP doing well. I take it the 3rd paragraph is talking about just the Japanese region in respect to the systems? Looks good!

Good lord!  If only half those PSP buyers picked up a PS3 it would be huge.

What I don't get, is the appeal of the DS. They must have some great titles over there that we don't see over here or something because....out side of Final Fantasy, I'm not seeing how that "console" can pull those numbers.

However I do give the N credit for sticking with a cartridge type format for the DS, Don't get me wrong I think umd is cool, espcially now that you can output to TV from the PSP but I can't help think how much more batter life one could save by not having the whirling umd spindle.

Wow that many, who'd of thought it. Anyway it's great to see the sells pass by Wii even when there was no special reason for it.

The reason is that Sony has added mega cool features to thePSP recently such as thousand of internet radio stations and the ability to remote play ps1 games. More on the launching pad!

Maybe this is due to the PS3 in some way. Like playing PS1 games. The PS3 is a media server for the PSP. Maybe a lot more people are realizing this and picking up PSPs.
