Kaz Hirai says "it doesn't matter" when Home launches

President of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) Kazuo Hirai has stated that he feels the launch date of PlayStation Home “doesn’t matter” if it means the company is able to provide the best service possible for consumers.

"I'd much rather make sure we take the time to have a great service rather than rush something into the market - only for consumers to say: "This is not enough for me." I want to avoid that," Hirai told MCV.

"If we have the right service, it doesn't matter when we launch - so long as it's in a reasonable timeframe."

The online social networking platform has already been delayed twice in the past; something which Hirai himself has apologised for, though ultimately believes the delay was necessary to deliver a quality product.

"Whether our competitors decide to follow what we've done with Home or not follow us, that's up to them. Given the fact that I've delayed the launch of Home twice - for which I've apologised - I think I've done it for a very good reason, and that's because I want to bring the very best service possible to consumers around the world,” he added.

"We're very confident in when we do launch the open Beta service, it's something that will really resonate with the consumers."

PlayStation Home’s open beta is currently scheduled to begin in late 2008.

@Odium - That's all well and good but my blu-ray just fried and I'm getting tired of this years endless bad news that we've had.   The store is a mes despite it's revamp.  It seems like they only eve get 90% of the way there and everything has a "not quite" feel to it.

They should have done Home incrementally.  Like give us a  personal living space for friends with basic chat and customization features as were first demod ages ago, then add more complicated services as they go along.  This is how websites like facebook operate and how games like Warhawk stay fresh.  Sony need to change their dev style.  Ironic that they coined the phrase "game 3.0" Too many monolithic projects getting cancelled.  This seems like karate ... what we need is kung fu.

     does anyone actually care anymore?

I was looking forward to Home but as time drags on i find myself less and less interested.

I honestly cannot understand how it is taking this long to complete, i think there must be just one person who sleeps for 23 hours a day doing all the code.

It's not so easy as you all think to release something of this magnitude for thousands of people to you use, and i'm pretty sure the most of you will be tired of using this service after a few months. I know you think that the consumers are always right but don't forget that Home will not cost you anything even if it's better or the same as Xbox live (unless you but stuff like clothes or furniture or other things)

I don't see wtf so many people are b*****n about.  He is basically saying he doesn't want to release Home until it is a good product.  This is something that has never been done b4 on a console and you sackmunchers are upset because it is not out yet.  What a generation of impatient IDIOTS!!!!

I normally don't like how Kas handles the media, but I gotta say his comments here are spot on. I specially like the 2nd paragraph, it's like a response to all the crybabies out there.

I actually think this guy is a good person for Sony.  He is obviously into quality products, that right there is more then I can say for Xbox360.   That is what you need in a business too.  People may complain because of this, but in the end when it does come out, people will be happy.
