Killzone 2 dev explains absence of cover system in multiplayer

According to Guerrilla Games QA Manager Seb Downie, the "Lean and Peak" system seen in Killzone 2’s single player campaign will not be present in the game's multiplayer mode.

"It didn't work too well in the 360 degree combat environment that is multiplayer," wrote Downie on the Official PlayStation forums. "In single player the path is more linear and the action is usually ahead of the player. In MP levels are more arena based and you are more susceptible to flanking and being attacked from various angles."

Downie continued to explain how in multiplayer, the developer found that players were actually working against the "lean and peak" system, and concluded it was simply best to remove it altogether.

"We found that the L&P system didn't add anything in that scenario and that players often actually took a step back from cover objects to give themselves a little more freedom to move, so they were actually working against the system, so we ripped it back out," wrote Downie.

"Crouching was deemed sufficient."

Killzone 2 is due for release in February 2009.

well rip it back in fools,i'l use it.. or just make it an optional patch or something or even better if you can have the option to remove it via in-game Menu, kinda like with wut dev's do with the six-axis controls, giving them the option to remove or have it on.

woohoo! btw, this is my most anticipated title on the ps3 EVER untill KZ3,MGS5,ZoE3 or Dark Cloud 3... and others of course, but i SPECIFICALLY purchased my ps3 for killzone no matter wut date it was arriving... bieng that i was amongst the top 5 greatest players on Killzone 1 (no lie or brag, just skill and experience),plus i LOVED the first games story and loved Liberation as well..... and if any one has even payed attention to any of tho's games then they'll know that the first killzone won a few (not couple) awards for it (not e3 awards i think though),but seperate indie awards, and of course Liberation won some E3 awards and now killzone 2 will win even MORE awards........ goldeneye introduced many things to the FPS genre witch is y its so popular and becouse of it we might not of ben that good in the FPS industry or that far even... then halo did some justice, bringing some new stuff (i suppose) or just upgraded stuff from past FPS,but anywho, then there's KZ witch brought the FPS to a WHOLE NEW LEVEL of experience and once again proved to be a masterpiece in almost every way. (split screen sucked lol).

i fully trust any GG's decisions cuz they utilize their time valuably and patiantly, witch make them and us as gamers Happy. :)

    @3

You've just contradicted what you said in your first statement. As well as that your paragraph is as random as a fish trying to play basket ball with half a leg.

Looks like an enjoyable game and day one purchase for me though.

i think it would be better to implement the cover system in multiplayer too and everyone could decide to use it or not

the cover system in killzone 2 is not well apropriated for multiplayer bcz is a first person type cover and that doesnt really fit at all with players all over the place.

they know wat their doing. :D

how i condradict myself dude?? do explain.

and i admit my paragraph was quite the thickness for this generic topic indeed,im a HUGE KZ/GG fan so i allways seem to loos it to the excitment of KZ2. lol.

anywho, just add the d@mn L&P to it and let the players decide.

If you honestly have time to sit behind cover and lean and peak out against a single enemy in a multiplayer game, than it is too slow for me. So I think it's fine they took it out.

i am glad they left it out, it would create too much camping and spawn camping

I have no problem with this at all. If they played it and saw that not many people used it, why put it in when it is not needed. In games like R2 there is no cover because the game is to fast paced. That is probably what Killzone will be. MP games have to be fast paced or they get boring quick. *cough*RSV6*cough*

psn id: gingo.... it probably makes sense to leave the cover system out of multiplayer cos it would be annoying it some guy came up behind you and mauled you when you were fannying about covering against a wall

Trust me people, theres a reason they took it out...otherwise they wouldn't have done it...

"In MP levels are more arena based and you are more susceptible to flanking and being attacked from various angles."

I think  That about sums it up...

no problems here. i think they know what to do. plus you would get stuck while covering, leaving you unable to do a quick 180 and kill the person who flanked you

    Thats a crock of chit.

You silly muppets...we are past DOOM/Quake & UT controls.

When we play game based on realistic physics, we want to be able to move our character realistically. Thats what FPS is for...to put you in the place of that character......god. Why are so many games being such a let down?

!st Slant6 ignores the traditional Socom FPS and now KillZone2 multiplayer is limited to shoot & be shot. Whats next? LBP being single player only?

Let people decide if cover-fire works for their style of gaming. Give them the blooming option to use it or not.

This is BS IMO. there has to be another reason they kept ot out. If this is the only reason, then I say put the damn thing back in & give gamers the ability to turn it off if they want.

Yeah, I guess it makes sense. It seems like they're just copying GOW with that system anyways. Then again, since GOW launched I've seen many games try and implement something similar.

If the cover system is to restrictive and allows people to flank you then it's not going to help you avoid getting shot. You will be shot and it'll be even more annoying to you because it happened when you couldnt turn around and catch the guy who shot you.

But the solution is probably not the best, Instead maybe they should have loosened up the L&P system so that you can detach from cover easier, or not made the attachment as strong so you can pull away just by pushing in another direction that isnt towards a wall. I dunno maybe that would make you look spastic always popping on and off of cover like that but that's just a random thought I came up with in the moment. I'm sure with a couple of days and someone who actually knows how the code works, a better sollution could be found than the current one.

Why don't they do like Medal of Honour: European Assault did? Hold L1 and move the right stick to peak in the direction you want, without the need of sticking behind something. And why don't they just make it optional to have?

I don't think developers give anything a real good deep thought..

i`m glad they took lean & peak out. It looks & Sound like the first Gears of War thing where you`d take cover next to objects. I died more times & shouted obsenities at my Xbox than actually was necessary. It was soo frickin annoying, just didnt have freedom to move properly.

    Bring on R2 & K2

i'd have liked it if i could stick to walls and crouch behind cover because rerally i got so used to the cover system that when i went online i was like wtf? why'd they take that out. Sometimes matches turn into deathfests because we HAVE to run at the ieghty or so enemies spawn killing us.
