Guerilla Games Managing Director, Hermen Hulst, has stated that it’s forthcoming PlayStation 3 title Killzone 2 would not be possible without the added storage capacity of Sony’s Blu-ray Disc.
Speaking with the Official PlayStation Magazine, Hulst explained that the title would not be possible on competing formats utilizing regular DVDs, observing, "Xbox 360 doesn't have Blu-ray.”
"PlayStation 3 does. [A single level] is 2GB. We really need Blu-ray to make the game. I don't know how you could fit it on Xbox 360 without taking some shortcuts". Blu-ray isn't important for watching movies," he said, adding: "we need it for making games".
However, Hulst further added that the company believes the title would not be fully attainable on other consoles from a technical standpoint, regardless of the storage medium.
"I firmly believe that what we've shown we can get out of [PS3] would be difficult, if not impossible, to deliver on a competing machine", offered Hulst.
Guerilla’s Ter Heide explained the advantages of focusing on a single console as opposed to a multiformat release, allowing the developer to exploit PS3’s technical capabilities to the fullest:
"We literally can't do this stuff on any machine other than PlayStation 3. If you're developing a multi-platform game, you have to find a common denominator between the systems and say: that's what I'm developing for. Whereas someone focused on a single platform can really take advantage of everything it has to offer”, he said.
Killzone 2 is scheduled for release in North America some time in 2008; an exact date has yet to be revealed.

GREAT!!! A must have. Helghast are cool. ;)
This game is the reason i have a PS3!!!!
The second I heard that one level was 2 gigs on a video a while back I knew that the devs would publicly state that it isnt possible on any other platform. Still good to hear that devs are praising the blu-ray when most people were doubting it.
cool but nothing new. Wheres our rumble??
Since I thoroughly enjoyed the first game, I will definitely pick up this one. It has been clearly evident from the start that Blu-ray was needed for games. It is no longer possible for anyone to doubt Sony's decision to go with Blu-ray and this is like the fourth or fifth developer from a different studio to come out publicly in praising the advantage of Blu-ray and the PS3 as a whole though some of it is PR talk.
im not going to praise it or slag it until there is a review due to the fact that the 1st was an extreme letdown and the fact that it has great graphics, it can go either way
Of course, I agree with him completely, but this is expect from a 1st party developer. What I am waiting for is to hear this information from a 3rd party, specifically Ubisoft, EA, Capcom, etc.
does that mean the levels are really big or just really detailed?
Interesting comment. Looking forward to actually playing a game that is space/bandwidth intensive such as KZ2.

Killzone 2 is going to make Halo 3 look like Pac-Man.LOL.All hail Sony.Hoooraaahhhh
i wonder if this game will use the 50 gig disk?
Hoooraaaah, Hooooraaaaah, Hooooraaaaaah...
Beautiful news, finally people are realizing why adding bluray for the ps3, was a good choice by sony. Also game developers now are getting a grip on the ps3 hardware, and will now start making games slowely but surely better than 360.
360 might have a good plan for short term but at the 2 year mark the ps3 will start beatin gthe 360 easily. SOny's preparing for a great long term strategy.
MASTER_MAN...i'm sure that there will be hecka details...could be both but i dong know...i mean...guerilla has been working on this for a pretty long time now...
YEA KILLZONE FTW (FCUK THE WORLD)!!!LOL.
time it comes out it will be 2 years after the release of ps3, what are they doing to it, remaking it...
psn id: gingo... Killzone 2 is going to be awesome but i cant help feeling that we wont get a lot of levels if each one takes up 2 gigs but it will still be amazing
aint that the truth?
it looks good but that doesnt mean that its a good game. the gamplay could be crap.look at resistance, sure the game didnt have great graphics but it was still a lot of fun. im gonna wait for the reviews of this game.looks good so far though.
Oh it needs 100GB does it? Sure sure and PS2 is powerful super computer that might be used to build nuclear missiles and PS3 is so powerful it exists in the 4th dimension. Something must be wrong with my PS3 because all my racing games dont even have proper physics, realistic damage, or any AI smarter than a slug. Please please please Sony focus less time filling up games with FMV shyte and instead spend more effort on getting some games out now. Like this year please.
@ The Cleaner, after seeing your posts it's obvious you're here just to talk crap about Sony. I doubt you even have a PS3 so stop the whinning and go back to your Wii or 360 or whatever.
Now if we could make other developers see that more space equals better games which would = no more porting = no more xbox 360 ha ha ha ha ha.
Seriously if more 3rd party developers would see the pros of bluray we would have more games sooner than later
this game will be a boom in the gaming world
omg this Hulst is the only developer with sum fuccn common sense god if you wanna make a good game for a system then focus on that system. multi-platforms are of the past, exclusive titles for next gen consoles are the future. (sad to say but its true)
