Rockstar Games has quite a few titles due out over the next year. Midnight Club 4: Los Angeles will attempt to rival games such as Project Gotham 4 and Gran Turismo 5 in early 2008. Grand Theft Auto IV, which needs no introduction, will be an early contender for 2008 game of the year. Before both of those games, the ever controversial Manhunt 2 will be released on the Wii, PS2 and PSP platforms. However one of the less talked about Rockstar titles, LA Noire, is shaping up to be a huge PlayStation 3 game, with much emphasis on “huge”.
Recently Kotaku.com, through various sources, was lead to a blog detailing new and unknown information about the title which is slated to release sometime in 2009. The blog features interesting information but the one that stood out the most revealed that the Xbox 360's DVD9 support is insufficient to handle what Rockstar wants to do with LA Noire. Here is the new information revealed:
• The game will be a free-roaming title with a historically-accurate recreation of Los Angeles in 1947.
• Team Bondi has even hired a costume designer to research the clothing of the era so the game's attire can be accurate.
• Aside from main story, side missions will be based on actual cases pulled straight of the newspapers of 1947.
• A US Marine plays a big role in the story.
• Not so exclusive...but LA Noire definitely ain't coming to Xbox 360, the size of the game is an obstacle to this.
So as you may see, Rockstar and Team Bondi (Developer of LA Noire) currently believe that with the Blu-ray format, only the PlayStation 3 is capable of having this game.
LA Noire is a detective game based in a realistic 1947 Los Angelas where players must master the art of puzzle solving as they are thrown into various engagements around the LA area within to game. Set to release in 2009, LA Noire is sure to give gamers who unique gameplay experience. Check back with PSU as we will continue our coverage of LA Noire and all of the other great Rockstar Games titles set to come in the future.
Interestly, whilst the news may make LA Noire a PS3 exclusive, Sony announced some time ago that Rockstar was working on a completely separate, currently undisclosed, PS3 exclusive title.

Im acually wondering wth they did to Stranglehold to make it fit on 360. looked at the box for the PC version and it said it required 15gb of HD space! they must have butchered that game for 360 severly, or made it on 2 disks hopefully. well the defeate of DVD9 is pretty much inevitable. Next up, 360 version 10 with built in HD-dvd to delay their defeat

we already know blu-ray is bigger and better than dvd-9 but this war is a constant battle as long as hd-dvd still has support so get excited when you see compananies that support hd-dvd switch to blu-ray that is something to celebrate

I hope they use atleast 25GB of the capacity otherwise people will just say - use two DVD's... I purchased Final Fantasy 8 on PSX and it came on four or six (cant remember) CD's... that was fine. So I hope they really do use the capacity for good purposes.
I'm not keen on waiting out for a 2009 release - which I know will slip to 2010. As some others have already suggested by 2009 Nintendo and MS will probably be getting set to role out there new consoles. It's probrably going to happen like that. Nintendo use the same CPU & GPU chipset as in Gamecube so its 100% compatible - they just increase the clockspeed and memory as pricing allows. They could easily release a Wii 2 and play all the same games so people would not be upset - the Wii 2 would run at 1080p and be priced about what the current Wii is - The old Wii would still sell and be positioned at US$80 - US$100...
Similarly Microsoft now has rights over their PPC CPU & ATi GPU so they can at any time simply add a faster version with 4 additional cores and double the memory and keep 100% native compatibility. IE: just like a PC running Windows you can add more CPU & Cores and scale the computer as required. No one would get upset - and Microsoft would just extend the saleable period for games for another 5 or 6 years... Very attractive to publishers.

DVD9 and HD DVD are dead. By the time La Noire comes out for PS3, we all will be using Hitachi's new 100GB Blu-ray discs on our PS3s and all other Blu-ray players by 2008. MORE than enough GBs for LA Noire and any other game for PS3 can EVER handle.

Can someone give us a reminder in 18 months that this game will be eventually coming out. I mean 2009 at best? - I'll have forgotten by then. The wait...The wait...

If Microsoft uses bluray in ther next console, would they have to pay royalties to Sony? That would be the definition of irony!

This reminds me of back when rockstar was creating games soley for sony from the birth of gta. With L.A. Noire it think the title will be amazing and im glad alot of game devs use blu rays space up and i like how sony created a nice future proof console I think honestly blu ray was such a great move from sony even though it was sorta risky at first but im glad everyone accepting their decision :).

First Rockstar, then everyone else! I can't until the fact is known that DVD9 won't cut it anymore. That's for trying to jump the gun on "next gen" M$! Sony had a vision and stuck with it. I respect that. Also, the article says "not so exclusive". What are they talking about?

dudes, if it's taking them so much time to do it, by the time they're giving the finishing touches to L.A Noire, they've probably mastered the ps3 working routines 3 or 4 times, so QUALITY won't be an issue, and ppl tend to forget things lot, remember when they launched GTA: San Andreas???? R* said that they had to leave many things out because there wasn't enough space, sony was wwwwwwaaaaaaaayyyyyyy ahead of the developers when they devised Blue-Ray some ppl called them MAD i say those guys are genius, ps3 will be around at least for five years or more, and then we'll get ps4 with backward compatibility ( i think it's wrote that way if not, sorry), with a faster BR-reader, and i can't even imagine the power of the machine, i know, i know i write a lot, but all this just to say that it'0s inevitable that M$ will lose this race, who in is right state of mind will buy another console in one year and a half, even it the games are still compatible??? and that's why the 3shi6tt0y is condemned....
