Media Molecule’s Mark Healey is feeling decidedly chuffed with himself after the company’s PS3 exclusive LittleBigPlanet scooped up a BAFTA for Artistic Achievement on Tuesday night, revealing the category was "secretly the one I really hope we would win."
Speaking to Eurogamer during the event, Healey remarked that the game’s BAFTA success held particular significance for him, as "it's something I can explain to my mum and she'll understand."
"It probably is good to help get recognition, because it is a big industry and it does pull in a lot of revenue compared to all the other major entertainment industries," he added.
Despite being nominated in six categories and snapping up only one gong, Healey remained thrilled with the result, stating he felt the team “deserved that one."
"I thought we'd be lucky if we got one to be honest, because of the other games that were nominated," he told us. "I think it's a little reminder that what we do isn't so crazy after all. There's people out there who actually enjoy it and like it."
Elsewhere, he also tipped his hat to the creative talent shown by gamers since the game’s release: "I can't believe it; it's almost verging on the ridiculous," he said. "Some people that have obviously put so much time and effort into it - it's phenomenal.”
"The one that I've seen most recently that really blew me away was a homage to Dead Space. I've obviously sat down and used those tools myself, and I can see the amount of effort that's gone into that - it's amazing."
Finally, Healey indicated that there’s plenty more to come from SackBoy and friends, stating, "As a concept there's a lot of room still to explore with it - I think we'd like to broaden it and explore it a bit more.”
