Movies based on video games are notoriously bad, which was why when Max Payne was announced as being turned into a film, not many people listened.
However, when Mark Wahlberg was announced as playing Mr. Payne himself, heads started to turn, and when Ewe Bol's name DIDN'T come up, people started to care.
Well, the script by Beau Thorne is done and filming is set to start on March 2nd in Toronto. The film is being directed by John Moore, the man who brought you Behind Enemy Lines, The Omen (remake), and Flight of the Phoenix.
For those of you who may not know the Max Payne series, the story unfolds as a cop comes home to find his family murdered and a long line of twists and turns he must go through to discover who is at fault and take his revenge. It is definitely worthy of a film adaptation, let's just hope they adapt it well.
Filming is projected to finish by May 9th, so check back for more details!

this is one game that does have a good base plot for a movie will wait and see.
This movie will suck big time. Cop, family killed, revenge? wow, that's original.
well the games are like a graphic novel/ shooting. I freakin LOVED them both.
the film should be interesting a bit like Sin City. :D
But I don't think Mark Wahlberg is the right acter for the role of "the pain to the Max".
Mark Wahlberg cant play Max Payne. He doesnt look constipated enough!
Well, if being a movie based on a video game wasn't bad enough, it's also starring Mark Wahlberg, which virtually gaurantees I will never see this movie unless somebody paid me to.
Brandon
Storyline / sounds like THE PUNISHER
the game is made like they think of creating a movie so this cant go bad xD
i disagree i think they did a great job on hitman =] resident evil wasnt so bad the 1st one was awesome shut up psu lol
hope this movie rules.. havent played the game tho.. it seemed too xboxy
btw... leeman i see your very open minded??
This game had one of the best story lines i have ever played i will be one of them to go watch this movie for sure when it comes out as for what some people say that movies based on games are bad then you guys just don't know a good movie when you see one i must say tho blood ryane 1 was ok i guess not the best but 2 was a waste as ok aswell Alone in the dark was not so good made by the same makers so what you guess lol anyway a good movie based on a game would be Hitman and Resident evil they are both good movies aswell very nice story lines i hope Max payne will be the same.
I can see this turning out good. I like Mark Whalberg as an actor and thank god Uwe Boll isn't in charge. I cut off one of my fingers everytime i hear about Uwe Boll making a Far Cry movie...and don't bother bringing it up cuz I already cut them all off...I'm typing with my face...
psn id: gingo.... sounds good but movies based on video games usually suck so i wont hold my breath
Oh buy don't hold your breath for this one, no matter how well the game franchise is it never carry's over to the movies. >_< Its a sad curse on videogames I suppose.
who is Mark Wahlberg ?
this actor played in "the Departed", "the italian job" and he's latest "shooter" witch was pretty good :D
I rate mark wahlberg highly as an actor so i'll keep an eye on this.
Max Paynes probally my fav
im gonna curious on this movie
but i dont think all videogame movies suck
like i thought Silent Hill, The Resident Evil Movies, and Doom where good
i havnt seen hitman but i dont think its all that good
mostly because the guy who plays Agent 47 doesnt look like him
and the guy who does the voice in the video games is an actor and the one they based the character off of, it would have been better if he played it
for me the worst film which was adapted from a video game to date has to be street fighter, but my personal fav has to be final fantasy advent children than mortal combat (the first film they made, the other 2 were cr@p), me too i liked doom, resident evil and silent hill, even hit man was good even though i think they could have found a better actor for the main role. i guess opinions part very much on this matter
That director sucks.. His movies sucked too.
Well in retrospect yeah there were a couple movie-based games that did well and all were noted. One of my favorites is still silent hill, runner up would be the original MK movie (omg not annhilation lol).
I like the shooter but he isn't someone I look out for in other movies and he looks no where near like Max Payne.
I have yet to like a movie based of a game. Every one of them goes in their own direction based off the normal principles of an action movie, i.e. car cases, everythin blowing up, love interest. The only connection between the game and the movie based off that game is the Title they both hold. I feel what they do is buy an already written script that has nothing to do with the game and change a few things like character names and then give it the title of the game.
If they make the film as close as the game as possible and even put events that happen in the game into the film, and maybe use CGI. Then they only target the hardcore fanbase, so they take more time, spend more money to create a great film for the fanbase only to have a small returns. Instead they just make a mediocre film with loads of action and explosions for the majority of movie watchers and than have the fanbase watch the movie based on the title only to dislike it. They just aim for a wider audience rather than the fanbase is what I'm saying. Otherwise you'de have all the movies in CGI to match the game.
bruce willis shudve been in this.
I bet the movie turns out be pretty decent...about as good a movie as you can expect that is based off a game. And Marky Mark....dayum, that dude is the real deal. Four Brothers anyone?
There is an independent film that has been in production for some time

im looking forward for a new max payne since the movie might resurect it
but we all know how movie based games end up...lol
@2 I don't understand why movies always have to be original to be good. Movies have been around for over 100 years now. Each year dozens of new movies are released. Tell me, how can every single one of those be completely different from the rest? I think the idea of a Max Payne movie sounds great. i liked the RE films (except Extinction), Silent Hill, Alone in the Dark, and Doom (kind of) so not all adaptations are bad. Most of them are though.
Come on, anyone but Marky Mark. I can't stand that guy.
Hehe, hope Mark can pull of that constipated look Max always seems to have :P
