Media Molecule talks LBP delay, reveals new release dates

Media Molecule has commented on the recall of the highly anticipated title LittleBigPlanet. As many of you are already aware, Sony has begun a global recall due to offensive material found within the soundtrack of the game. We've included an excerpt from the developers below; they're just as disappointed as we are.
"We learnt yesterday that there is a lyric in one of the licensed tracks which some people may find offensive, and which slipped through the usual screening processes. Obviously MM and Sony together took this very seriously. LBP should be enjoyable by all. So within 12 hours of hearing about this issue involving a lyric (in Somalian, I believe!), we prepared an automatic day 0 patch and had a new disk image ready; however a decision was made within Sony that the right thing to do for quality and support of people with no online was to replace existing disks. They assure us that they are doing everything in their power to get things straightened out as fast as possible, and will announce dates soon."
LittleBigPlanet will be released on October 27 in the United States and October 31 in Europe. Coincidentally, this was the original release date for Europe before the game was moved up a week.
Stay tuned for our review of LittleBigPlanet this weekend.

Wow Sony really cares about its customers. I can't believe they would switch all the discs just to please Somalia gamers. I don't think there are that many of them and changing all those discs is a major loss of profit because of the production. I don't think 6 days is a really bad wait though. I'm enjoying Dead Space now and have plenty of other things to do with myself in the meantime.

It is not that long, people ca wait for it. I will not be purchasing this game because there are games that I am more intersted in coming out. Not saying that LBP isn't going to be amazing, I just want the others more.

I think this is a good call.
So what its been delayed until the end of the month...I'm still getting it.
I'm glad to see they are not ignoring the many people who do not have access to the internet.
For the many people who would just start flaming other religions as the cause of this, get a flaming grip. LBP is a game for everyone...its not just a game for western gamers...it has no boundries. So a song that sets boundries is not good for the game. And if you cared about the game as much as you would like to pretend, then you would shut up with the idiotic remarks.

OMG people saying respect to sony for recaling this game
yeah right bunch of morons for giving in to this bulls**t.
what will be the next game to get recalled or delayed for a religious reason?
p.s. what would have happened if sony just released it anyway, do you seriously expect riots would break out, or that so many would boycott the game, don't think so.

How offensive could it be? In GTA you walk around and beat people to death. This PC nonsense is tiresome.

I blame lawyers. I bet their lawyers decided that it be best that they did this. Lawyers have been making money off of people being offended for years now. They go on to be politicians that write laws in the books so more lawyers can have more stupid cases they can make money off of. Political correctness and censorship has done nothing to fix the problems of the world. Has it done away with injustices based on race, religion, or gender? NO! It just stirs up more hatered and makes adults who the react to the "offensive" comments look like immature children. Worst of all, it has stirred up fear. People are affraid to speak their mind, because it might offend somebody. They are afraid they'll get labeled a biggot, or racist and lose their job and be an outcast from society. Is this the kind of world we want to live in? Stuff that needs to be said isn't always pretty. If somebody says something offensive to me, I tell them why they're wrong. I don't go demanding an appology, or call my lawyer. If they truly feel sorry about what they said, they should appologize without being told to. If they aren't, then I'm not gonna lose sleep over it. In the end, I think a person's right to say whatever they feel like, nomatter how stupid/offensive, is a lot more important than my personal feelings. I don't know why they didn't do a voluntary recall where anyone who couldn't get the patch online could exchange their old version for a fixed one...IF THEY WERE OFFENDED AND REALLY WANTED TO! Well, at least it wasn't pushed back for months over this whole ignorant mess.

You probably wont see this, but 67 is a great post!!! PC terms have never made things easier, we have to keep our mouth shut incase we get labelled for our opinions, so we get mad at the government for puttin this crap on us, and while we're at it, may as well get mad at the ones we have an opinion about in the first place and then speak yer mind and after the storm, get labelled a biggot... Well I do love a good ol' riot, when's the next one?

Stop..... and really think about this.
Why has society become like this? Do you seriously think it was a brain storm between a couple of lawers that brought this about or the more darker and apparently easily forgotten past of the free nations?

I'm amazed that Sony took control and made Mm recall the game and make new discs without the song. Also love it that the lyrics are in somalian, an Afrikan language and that the offensive material is offensive to Muslims, I mean, how many Muslims speak Somalian?

So everybody are attacking muslims now for this. What if it had lyrics that was against America? What would you say then?
Everyone can critisize muslims based on the actions of extremists, but not one person can say anything bad about America.
You all should be praising Sony for taking this action this fast. Also, it's not like it's a month delay or something.

Strudel, Islam is a religion, 20% of the worlds population (1.3 billion) follow that religion. I hope you understand that your race, country of origin, and culture has no bearingon what you choose to believe. If I interpret what you are asaying correctly you are assuming that all muslims must speak arabic? That manner of thinking is like all chrisians must speak english. it just isn't true.

Here are two basic questions for Sony:
1) Has Sony confirmed that the lyrics in question, which apparently are in Somali, are indeed from the Quoran? While a poster on the European forum claimed that they are, his account vanished shortly thereafter. Has Sony brought in an independent expert to verify this?
2) Has anyone contacted the composer, Toumani Diabaté, to hear his side of this story? This fellow is a celebrated musician throughout the world, including parts of the Muslim world. I personally find it very unlikely that he would do anything to "desecrate" or "blaspheme" his own religion, or the religion of much of his fanbase. Someone should ask him about the lyrics in question, and whether or not they truly are from the Quoran.
Could it be possible that the controversial phrases aren't really from the Quoran in the first place, and that this whole thing is based on a misunderstanding???

@71
I don't know if I quite understand the second question, so if I don't quite answer it, please forgive me. I'm not saying that it's some big lawyer conspiracy. People want what they see as justice for themselves, and lawyers or politicians jump on board and make things happen. As the old saying goes "the road to h*** is paved with good intentions". Usually freedom gets shoved aside because of a sad story of injustice, or bad turn of events. If somebody gets shot in a robbery and paralyzed for life, does that mean we should outlaw all guns? Some would think yes. I think that is wrong. I feel sorry for the man who got shot, but his misfortunes of somebody treading on his right to live in peace does not give him a free range to tread on my right to own a gun. Instead of society having the mindset of "let's not outlaw this, because some people deserve their freedom", we as a society, sometimes let emotions and our own morals get in the way of freedom sometimes. I'm not saying emotions and morals are bad, but when they cross with freedoms, they can be.
I kind of got sidetracked from the topic and made this a bigger issue than it is, but just to get back to the topic of the LBP recall, I think it was a lawyer's decision, or advice that prompted the recall, not the people who made the game. That was really what I was trying to get across. It's not like the where the game is really glitched and the programmers really think it needs to be recalled to work right. I'm just wondering if they are really sure that's what it's saying? I mean, did they get a translator and make sure that's what it's saying? Maybe the person heard wrong. You know, some people think that CCR singing "there's a bad moon on the rise" is "there's a bathroom on the right" :) I would like to know more details. Personally, I think they should replace it with Johnny Cash's "When the Man Comes Around". I'm a Christian and when he quotes the Book of Revelation in that, I'm not offended. I think it sounds awesome. Of course Islamic culture is different that mine, so who knows exactly what they find offensive.

I find it awesome that you say that. At least you can say that you don't understand what they find offensive. And I think that is the first step towards peacful discourse with everyone. I am sorry but I am not a religious person but I think that hearing people talk this way is just hurling more hatred at our differences then trying to get around them and understanding.
Now I think you are looking at this the wrong way. Sony has had games that can be considered very offensive before. I think that they are making the choice of message that they want to put across in game and considering consumer backlash more than lawyers. Sackboy looks like it appeals to kids, and if it had shipped with a song that had the lyrics "Every soul shall have the taste of death'" and "All that is on earth will perish" in my country if they ever found out what that meant i could see alot of angry parents. Even worse is it being lyrics from the quaran. In my country there is a huge hatred for anything muslim so that would just make people angrier if they found that out. Sony is just erasing a target from their backs.

The words were in my post above.
Every soul shall have the taste of death'" and "All that is on earth will perish"
Which is odd because the song sounds more uplifting than dramatic.

i think the only reason a somalian would have a ps3 is if they got it from pirates or maybe there one of those "warlords". why do muslims have to be so offended by everything? and i find it funny that they want to be veiwed as peaceful people but everything seems to make them so enraged? once again religion ruins something else that has nothing to do with religion.... at least this didnt start a war.

@83, words are not actually offensive from what I've seen. The offensive part is that they are supposedly taken from Quran, which if incorporated in music is blasphemous because music is restricted in Islam. That's like an insult in ones face. It's a good thing that Sony is rectifying their mistake otherwise it would be terrible for their business.

I think its worse that so many people are crying over a 1 week delay then the offensive material itself. Are you really destroyed personally and emotionally over this announcement? If this is the case it is time for you to find a new hobby. Afterall this is what gaming is, its not a life choice, its not a style of living, its a hobby. Unfortunitly we now live in a world where its ME ME ME. I dont get what I want so I am going to cry about it. If you are hurt by this its time to grow up, it one week people, get over yourselves and your selfish attitudes.

@ 80, cod4 Wasnt offending u know ehy, cuz they didnt mention anything about religion, it was the U.S forces attacking teeroists(but they didnt connect terrorists with muslims) and thats what i loved about the game.
back to LBP i think now the game will appeal to more poeple and i hope everyone enjoy the game, and i apologize for any comment that may have offended anyone, all i said was to give my opinion( a muslim's point of view). i raise the white flag loool :p.
anyways i think that psu should have like a small section for lbp where u can show the level u created and then choose the best and give out an award... that would make it mre competitive u know :)

@ 42...you've GOT to be joking, right?...I can't think of too many games that HAVEN'T been offensive to Christians in one way or another...only difference is, we don't delay games because of it... I commend Sony for the action taken...I also agree with the guy in the other topic who said somethin' about the Letter-Writing-Guy finding a few words offensive in COD4, yet he's perfectly OKAY with shooting another guy's brains out in virtual reality...

Hey Sony, you suck fat monkey balls. This game is the only positive media attention you will recieve this year, don't ruin it. You already F****d up the Socom franchise with your sorry excuse for an online network, so please just let this be. Just release a patch to solve the issue. It's actually sad that you have to delay one of the 2 decent exclusives you have just because of some lyrics. I guess even Sony knows that a offering a mandatory patch on release is just too much to ask. Nothing else I can do but feel sorry for Sony. Honestly, is this something that they couldn't possibly have seen coming?

So stupid... So there were verses from the Qu'ran mixed into a song on LBP. They were innocently put to music with no disrespect intended, and then a few of the really crazed Muslims scream 'OFFENSIVE!' and Sony bows out.
Maybe next they'll riot because girls in video games don't wear burkas. Curse the west for letting a girl show her face!
