Konami Digital Entertainment announced today that it has delayed the Metal Gear Online beta test in North America due to unprecedented demand.
Speaking in a statement on its official website today, the company stated:
“We would like to thank all players for their keen interest in taking part in the beta test. However, we regret to inform you that due to extraordinary levels of traffic from all around the globe, we have been unable to run the service to the level we expected.
As a temporary measure, we will be deferring the start of the US public beta test until we are able to stabilize our server. We would like to apologize for all inconveniences as well as confusion caused.
We would like to add that due to the above reasons, we will be making the following changes to the schedule:
1) Starting date: TBA. We will be making another announcement on 22/4/2008 23:00(PDT)
2) Beta Test closure: This will now be on 11/05/2008 at 24:00(PDT) rather than 06/05/2008 at 24:00(PDT)
IMPORTANT: Please note that your voucher code will only be valid up until 05/06/2008, so please make sure to register them by then.”
The full version of Metal Gear Online will be included in the forthcoming June 12 release of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Servers for the European MGO beta test go live today.
Stay tuned.
UPDATE:
The beta test has been post-poned for Europe as well. The message on the UK website reads:
1) Suspend beta test: As of 21/04/2008 08:00(CEST)
2) Restart date: TBA. We will be making another announcement on 22/04/2008 08:00(CEST)
3) Beta Test closure: This will now be on 11/05/2008 at 24:00(CEST) rather than 06/05/2008 at 24:00(CEST)
UPDATE 2:
The Konami website has been updated and now tells us that the beta will begin on April 25 instead. Here are the US and UK news posts:
US:
1) Start date: Planned for 04/25/2008 24:00(PDT). While the start is planned for the weekend, it may change due to unforseen circumstances.

EU:
1) Suspend beta test: As of 25/04/2008 08:00(CEST)
2) Planned for 04/25/2008 24:00(PDT). While the start is planned for the weekend, it may change due to unforseen circumstances.

You know what Hyrius? You're right...
I don't know why Konami didn't expected that amount of traffic. well I guess that the only thing we can do is wait. Its a pity that they cannot let us see the character editor during the servers fixing.

Konami clearly didn't take a hint from the insane amount of traffic on their ID site nearly a week ahead of the scheduled release to do something about servers. They also clearly underestimated the PS3 community's interest in the MGS series...Well now they know...

I wouldn't be surprised if M$ had a hand in this (don't care if it sounds like a conspiracy) but really, they're the opposing company and they know that MGS4 is gonna be HUGE blow to them. And paying for PSN wouldn't make a difference like it was said before.....hmmm now let's see...how long until the xbots come out of the closet ???

@Hyrius you are quite wrong. There were several problems on halo 3 as well. A programming error was found on the game Crackdown which brought the beta and no one was able to download the game at beta launch from the game. It took Bungie(Halo's company) one day to figure out the problems. The halo beta was extended because of the problems. Sound familiar?

why do devs (and whoever else readys a beta) never expect such high levels of traffic, its madness especially when its practically an open beta. As stated above you dont get this with M$ (rushes for nearest toilet to be sick j/k). Konami and Sony have let everyone down here, big time. We just gotta hope full release it worth the let down!

Up to a week late would be fine with me, after all, it is FREE! (apart from our download cap). The extension to the beta is compensating, plus we'll be able to play 24hrs as it is open worldwide and not just in the US! All all win win for everyone....once it starts working! :)

Hyrius, Actually you sound even MORE like an Xbot when you claim not to be one especially when you seem to claim it's better to PAY for a FREE BETA TEST.
Forthe record the beta is being run by Konami so even if it were on the 36* the problem would have setill happened because Konami still would have underestimated the demand and not had enough servers set up for the test.

I told you. I told you. You wanna know whythis has happened? Why everyone keeps underestimating the PS3 fanbases numbers? All the negative hype last year. People think PS3 adopters bought the system for Blu-Ray. Period.

Hey Hyrius, can't you read...the servers couldn't handle the OVERWHELMING demand. There was a great demand for the Halo 3 beta, BUT not overwhelming. I have an xbox and Halo 3 wasn't a must own(or play) for me....and believe this I wasn't the only person with a 360 that felt that way.

Konami knew this would be highly anticipated, but the thing is, Konami didnt know that probably 99.9% of the PS3 army were trying to gett down with MGO that night....lol
All I can say is good call for the beta Konami.....If anything this reasures me that the final product will be top notch.
People say "at least with xbox you see where the money goes with online play"
I think Warhawk and Ressistance are probably among the best quality online games for nex gen consoles.......And guess what, we dont pay nothing for that service.
Dont that tell you something xbots lol......?

like was said before they should have antisapated the huge amount of traffic just nowing about how popular it is should have prompted them to have more servers and than the traffic on the site should have told them also.
