Molyneux disappointed with PS3's performance in 2008

Lionhead Studios boss Peter Molyneux has described the PlayStation 3’s performance in 2008 as “disappointing,” feeling Sony’s machine was ultimately pipped to the post by the Wii and Xbox 360.
‘2008 was the year that the Nintendo Wii got even better, more than anyone really thought possible when it first launched. The 360 did well, although it was put into the shade somewhat by the Wii. PlayStation 3 has been disappointing to say the least,” Molyneux told the BBC.
It’s not all bad news, though: the famed videogames designer let slip that one of his favourite titles last year was none other than Media Molecule’s famed social platformer, LittleBigPlanet, which Molyneux described as a marriage of “superb artistry and a fantastic marketing job by Sony.”
“One of my personal favourites was Little Big Planet; superb artistry and a fantastic marketing job by Sony - yet it didn't make the numbers,” he said. “I wonder if Christmas is really the right time to release a new title. We've got into a rhythm [of sequels at Christmas] which is all fair and well while people are buying games but we have to make sure we don't get complacent.’
Unfortunately, the Fable 2 creator remained largely unimpressed with 2009’s impending line-up, adding, “Next year, well, it's all looking a bit dry. All the triple A titles came out this Christmas and while there is stuff in 2010 we can look forward to, off the top of my head I cannot think of anything next year that really excites me.”
Resident Evil 5, Killzone 2 and Heavy Rain might want to have a word in your ear about that one, Pete.

Man this guy is stupid. PS3 owned 2008... almost every single publication said the PS3 was the year's finest machine. Whether you like it or hate it you cant possibly expect to go on record saying it was a disappointing year and not expect people to look sideways at you. And 2009 boring? Uncharted 2 alone is enough to make me want to wet my pants... its gonna be an awesome year!

this is the year for the playstation 3 i mean look at the games coming out, the exclusive games Killzone 2 will crush everything M$ will offer st8 of and don't forget HOME which will be getting new things and always chaging to look and feel better. this guy has failed what he's trying to say GAME OVER

lol 09 looks dry? not on ps3: Heavy Rain, God of War 3, InFamous, Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, White Knight Chronicles etc. etc. My analysis of 08 is that it was the sheer amount of AAA titles that lead to low sales numbers across the board, when you have multiple exclusives they start competing for consumer dollars thats not to say they won't sell in the future though, people simply have priorities LBP and other titles (valkyria chronicles) will surely get their due sales.

Between Christmas of last year and this Christmas 9 people I know bought PS3s, not counting me! This isn't online friends, these are actually people I know. It would have been 10 if one of my friends hadn't got laid off around Thanksgiving. I know of 1 person who bought a Wii, 1 person got a DS, and another person got a PSP. The guy who bought the Wii also got a 360...AND IT BROKE A MONTH AFTER HE GOT IT! He was the only person I knew who got a 360. 3 of the guys who got new PS3s sold their old 360 to buy it and neither of them regret it. Maybe it's just me and Sony just happens to be doing good in my state. As far as games go, nobody else even came close to Sony's exclusive lineup. I'm not being a fanboy, I'm just stating facts! Of course this guy is going to say he likes LBP, it's like saying you like Mario games. Who doesn't? The only 360 game I wanted was Fable 2, until I heard it was a flop. The only other game 360 had was Gears 2 and Left 4 Dead. The only Wii game I wanted was...I honestly can't think of a single one. When I think Wii all I can think of is that crazy soccer mom lady snow boarding with Shawn White and reading the thank you note from her kid. *shutter* Oh, and controllers stick in TVs lol :) The only reason Wii is beating both consoles is it's the cheaper of the 3 and if this idiot hasn't noticed, the economy sucks more right now than a White House intern.

Its definitely the year for playstation. 2009 will be dry...for everything except playstation. Wii has absolutely nothing left, even nintendo has said so - all their ideas have been used. Xbox has what to look forward to?, urm, some cheap Halo spin off and Gears 3 next xmas which is also supposed to be coming to PS3.

@16 : using fanboyisms? not my fault that fable 2 did SUCKED big time, all the tihings he said that the game would be a revolution and that the would change the way we already see videogames and etc..etc..etc...is my fault that he lost all credits for that? jeez, he is a joke on the internet (look at penny arcade), even if he worked for sony, i won't buy any game of his studio

tell me 1 original thing that Microsoft have done on they consoles that you can say "wow"? i can say some examples that will make you say "WTF?"
Original Xbox = "let put a HD!!" "but won't let it use for other things that save games "WTF?" (thanks the scene it have another uses)
Xbox 360 = "let put an option to copy the game to the HD!" "but you still need to have the Game disk into the drive" "WTF?" (preventing overburning because of the cheap materials that M$ use on the 360? or the disc scratching issues?)
so, tell me good things that M$ had done to the Console market and maybe i'll read and change my mind

Why does anyone care what this guy has to say? His opinion is clouded by the unsuccessfulness of his projects. How does he figure the Wii got better? Nintendo just sold more of them - there weren't any exceptional titles that shadowed Xbox or PS. This guy never has anything positive to say.

psn id: gingo... i read with interest up to the point where he said 2009 is looking quite dry then i lost all hope for mankind when a figurehead in the gaming industry cant think of one good game out of the 20+ that are coming out next year, maybe he meant for the 360 though

... 2009 ... well thinking about Killzone2 , God Of war 3 , Uncharted 2 , Final Fantasy XIII ( + Versus) , resident Evil 5 , Wardevil , Bioshock 2 , Massive Action Game (M.A.G) , The Agency ..... yah peter ur right ....its a gonna be a dry Year
and also i was disapointed with Fable 2 .. it was so short .. that i can even finish the game befor finishing my Pepsi :) ..Fable its just a wanna be KOTOR or Mass Effect ... but failed to reach them ...

PS3 earned more money for developers than the other systems last year. That looks bad for the Wii and its hype must end this year. Sony will eventually drop the price and then we will see the flood gates fly open. The PS3 is holding its own around the world and only here in America will it really improve when the price is slashed, we love cheap well made devices.

Is he disappointed in the sales of 2008 or the line up? Because the line up was really good but the sales weren't. I don't see 09 looking dry it actually looks like the best yet. Maybe he only likes games like LBP and Fable?

PS3 exclusives start off great with Killzone 2, and a ton more, like inFamous, God of War 3, Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain, that thing from Team Ico,The Agency, The Ratchet and Clank sequel that was hinted to in Quest for Booty, Dc Universe Online, flOwer
this guy is a freakin idiot, he cant even make trees grow properly in fable like he promised, heck even IGN gave PS3 the best of awards for it's lineup. At this point, i wont be suprised if Molyneaux absolutely adores Wii Music.
if he's talkin about the ps3 lineup of 09, he's an idiot, cuz the only thing wii is getting is Animal Crossing and nothing else,and the 360...well, all it has now is a halo expansion and halo wars,

Seriously if you compare the ps3's lineup against that of the xbox then its way better.. Sony has lot of exclusives this year (heavy rain, infamous, god of war 3, killzone 2, uncharted 2) and maybe even a title from team ico..
I do think that microsoft is marketing its games a lot better than sony does.. -

Me personally, IMO, 2008 was a warm-up for 2009's lineup from Sony. I mean they just began to bombard us with titles starting as early as October of last year and hasn't let up since. Then to kick '09 in gear you have Skate 2 (Jan. - multi), KZ2 (Feb. - exclusive), SF IV (Feb.), & RE5 (Mar.). These are only disc based games. We're not even touching the PSN & PSP titles. This dude needs to lay off the pepe (that's coke in laymen terms).

I feel the same with next years games, they all look good but none of them superb. inFamous looks decent, but not brilliance, KZ2 looks alright, but yet again, not AAA. Heavy Rain looks good, but I fear for the gamelplay. And Fable 2 was good, but there was a lot that was dissapointing, and that didn't make sense. Loads of this good be fixed through patches, some are just concept, and can't be changed unless remade.

Pete is always saying things that don't make sense. If he said that the PS3 2008 lineup didn't appeal to him, than alright, thats fine. You can't say its dissapointing though, it was way better than the Wii and you can say 360 as well. Just because you didn't put Fable II on PS3 doesnt mean its disappointing. As for the 2009 lineup, its looking great on PS3, but as a whole i dont see much of interest. There are some like Skate 2, and alot of PS3 games. Nothing on 360 I care for, and god knows the WIi hasn't had anything for months already
