PSP owners had fireworks set off upon Sony's announcement of Skype functionality coming to their handheld systems, but not all PSP owners will be able to share the same joy.
This new feature will only be coming to the new PSP model, the "Slim" or "Light" redesign, due to memory constraints on the original system. Sony's Nick Sharples officially released an explanation on this issue at CES and hopes to clear up any confusion.
“Although PSP-1000 and PSP-2000 are identical in basic functions, there are differences in hardware specifications to some extent and, for that reason, PSP-2000 may differ in features from PSP-1000. We had studied the possibility of supporting Skype with PSP-1000 but had to give it up because of the smaller size of main memory on PSP-1000 series.”
The discrepancy in memory is due to the fact that the original PSP has 32MB of memory while the new redesigned PSP was been bumped up to 64MB of internal memory. Our deepest condolences go out to the early adopters of the PSP, but PSP slim owners will certainly be looking forward to the day the brand new Skype logo appears on the XMB of our PSPs.

I need to get a new PSP anyway so I can put custom firmware on my PSP-1000 and wreak some havoc in BestBuy.

i'm amazed at all the stuff they are doing with a system that has been out for almost 5 yrs. it's really hard to keep up with everything they are adding to this system.
