NPD: PS3 owners unaware of multimedia features

Research obtained from NPD reveals that many consumers who own a PlayStation 3 are unaware of the systems various multimedia features beyond it's standard functionality as a disk-based videogames console.

The study, titled Next Gen Functionality & Usage, details that, while PS3 owners are found to download as much online content as those who own an Xbox 360, the majority of users were actually unaware of this function. Furthermore, most were more familiar with the Xbox 360’s online capabilities than that of PS3’s, and as a result were more likely to play games online on Microsoft’s next-gen console than Sony's.

The study also shows that around 71 per cent of those that own a PS3 as well as would-be owners rate the systems backwards compatibility option as its most important aspect; however, only 37 per cent were aware of it as a standard feature. Elsewhere, only 40 per cent of those who own a PS3 were aware of it’s capabilities as a Blu-ray player, though the number of those aware of the machines high definition output was considerably higher at 50 per cent, compared to only 30 per cent with Xbox 360.

Anita Frazer, an analyst at NPD commented: "I think what this really means is that gaming and all that is has to offer consumers has to be the first and primary focus of the machines and the software developed for them, whether it's from the first or third party manufacturers. While the extra features might be nice, they're not going to be a primary driver of a sale of a system.”

"That said, to the extent that the extra features might provide additional revenue streams for the parties involved, yes, there is more promotion needed to get consumers aware of the features and using them. I get asked a lot by people outside the industry if PS3 sales will benefit because it's a reasonably priced Blu-ray DVD player, and while I never believed a non-gamer would go out and pick up a PS3 in order to play movies, our research now backs this [belief] up. The systems are, by a big margin, game-playing devices."

We at PSU can only concur; consumer awareness in the additional features of PlayStation 3 could not only prove instrumental in increasing sales, but also attract consumers that are otherwise not interested in video gaming to perhaps utilize it as a means of testing the waters.

This is the responsibility of Sony and Hollywood, who put their movies on Blu-ray.

this shows the reason why i dont have a ps3, i buy a console for playing games and thats it, i dont buy movies because when i see a film once i never want to see it again, i will get a ps3 when it is about 200 pounds and it is currently 425 pounds here in the UK which is equal to about 750-800 dollars

They (Sony) are trying to increase awareness, what with the PS3 included on the "free" movie offer.  They list and show the PS3 right next to the standalone.  Maybe they should consider a Multimedia bundle adding the BD remote and a copy of Pirates 1 or 2, then sell them right next to the other standalones.

Well i already worked the S@%T out of mine even loaded on yellowdog 5.0.1. Asome stuff, more content is needed though. I plan on utilizing more of  that OS function very soon. But Sony for godsake put some informational booklets out there explaining the other functionality of the system. My friends and family members always shock when they see me using mine or i mention something about  one of these functions. For example i use to stream movies from certain sites but they all moved over to divx arrrrggggh. The PS3 is really the home entertainment hub killer. Nothing else is needed. With updates opening up more and more capabilities of the PS3, it is becoming the No1 choice for the next 10yrs.

P.S. To those of you who keep asking or writing questions about the disk drive speed go and google it and you will see that the drive speed is way ok to use right now, but i bet you that Sony with an update will be able to up the speed if they need to.

heck ya, never have such true words been put out! No one knows the capabilities, and the sales of the system won't be helped by its mutlimedia features unless sony agressively markets it!

Yeah, the PS3 is amazing it's just that the uninformed people out there don't know about all it's abilities and that it serves multiple purposes.

I'm sorry but that study had got to be complete BS, you dont drop 600 bucks on ANYTHING and not know what it does. Seriously the questionaire had to be given to people who never to uched a PS3 in their life outside of 5 minutes at best buy on a GT demo track.

why the heck would anyone spend that much money on the ps3 without knowing its capabilities outside being a games console?? if u want just a games console with a few added features, get a 360!!

oh, and thats why the "over-pricing" makes sense. i dont care about its price, im getting it the end of this year, because i trust sony will deliver and believe me its gonna b much more than just a games console to me!

I make sure I know exactly what I have before I buy anything thats electronic. I guess that is something that I would belive. My parents have a ps3 for bluray my dad found out it was smarter to buy a ps3 than a bluray. He likes technology he even used it for music and ofcourse now games. BUt my mom thinks that its just a dvd player. LOL Im pretty sure there is more people out there that are the same way.

Maybe it's up to the ps3 users to create some commercials that show usage and put it on youtube. I'm surprised sony hasn't already called out to the creative people to make home commercials for their product. make it a contest or something. Just a thought anyway.

just goes to show how complicated the ps3 is.. thats why the 360 owns all

  27. The Cleaner

    • 10:20am BST - August 11th, 2007

scott333 - the reason why Sony has not "called on" users to make home made commercials to post on youtube is they got caught faking it with that stupid PSP blog that pretended to be a user and ended up being another big fat Sony lie. As a result any so called home made adverts showing up on Youtube is going to be met with ridicule, suspicion, or apathy. Sony needs to work very very hard over a very very long time to earn back any credibility. Thats why I think they should just focus on making high quality games and cut the crap.

I am extremely skeptical of the "fact" that only 30 percent knew about the 360's HD capabilities. Also downright unbeleivable is the "fact" that only 40 percent knew that the ps3 is a blu-ray player. I want to know who was asked/questioned with this survey, as well as the methodology involved. If the test was done say with gamers from Egypt or Mexico, who do not have the same access to HDTV as say Norway or America, then or course I could believe these statistics, but these "results" are highly suspect as I doubt that a large enough sample was taken from a sufficiently large enough and diverse enough group of demographics to assertain these sweeping generalities that are being passed as "fact". The simple point is: I call Bulls**t
