Sony America has announced that Netflix access will be winging its way to PlayStation 3 owners across North America from November 2009.
The service, which is also available for Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console, allows PS3 owners to stream all the latest TV episodes and movies to their games console, with existing customers in the U.S. who own a PS3 able to snap up the service at no extra cost. A specialised Blu-ray disc is required to stream content, which will be provided free of charge by the rental company.
“The PlayStation 3 system has always been about more than just gaming, and it will soon be the only platform in the industry to offer consumers such a variety of convenient options for enjoying movies and TV shows,” beamed SCEA boss, Jack Tretton.
“Whether you want to watch content on Blu-ray disc and DVD, download it from the PlayStation Network’s video delivery service, or stream videos instantly from Netflix, the PS3 system is the only solution that offers it all.”
Reed Hastings, co-founder and CEO of Netflix, added, “As instantly watching movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix becomes an increasingly popular way to enjoy the Netflix service, our goal is to rapidly expand the devices that stream to our members.”
“As a leading game console and Blu-ray disc player, bringing Netflix to the PS3 system is a real win for both Netflix members and PS3 system owners.”
Europeans, meanwhile, will have to make do with the forthcoming Video Store service, which will be rolled out from next month.

@1
I believe the 360 will be getting something to do with sky, which depending on the channels you will have could be an interesting proposition, seeing as ive been looking into getting sky for a while, this could end up saving me money.

This is nice, I subscribe to Netflix w/ the Blu-ray option and was considering dropping it due to Netflix's lack of support for the PS3. This changes everything and since the PSN is free, it's another benefit over the 360.

This netflix streaming really isn't a big deal especially because it's mostly old movies. M$ charges for gold for absolutely no reason because online gaming is done by host for both consoles, you would think M$ would at least use dedicated servers with all that money. This coming to the ps3 is cool but it's yet another idea microsoft thought of first and it was cool for 360 owners with no internet browser. So many ps3 owners brag about the IB, but never use it. Hopefully netflix movies can be played by visiting the website on the IB.

Whats the point when we have the Video Store?

@16 - what's the point in having the video store when you can have Netflix? For 9 dollars, you get 1 DVD at a time through the mail and unlimited streaming through the PS3. For 4 dollars you get to watch ONE MOVIE on the PSN store and if you stop the movie, you only have a 24 hour period to do it!
With Netflix, you can stop/start as often as you want. You aren't RENTING individual movies, you're streaming them at no additional cost. You could watch content every hour of the month for the entire month and it's still the same 9 dollars. With Netlix, it's a stream and it's fast. With the PSN, you have to wait quite some time to watch a movie you just bought. It takes a while to download a standard def movie and the high def ones take for freaking ever. Nothing like "renting a movie" and not watching it until tomorrow because it's such a huge download. With the Netflix stream, it's instant. You see a movie you want to watch? You watch it. It's like cable on demand but the individual streams don't have a cost associated with them in addition to the normal subscription cost.
Your question is actually backwards, it's not "Why do we need Netflix when we have the PSN store?". It should be, what's the point in the PSN movie store when you have Netflix?

We don't have Netflix in Europe anyway so it doesn't matter to me. :P

It obviously does matter to you since you're being so negative about it. I realize you're jealous about this feature and I honestly can't blame you. It's great.

I think this announcement, combined with the price drop and PS3 will finally become this generation's console champion. 360 might have owned the first 4 years, but at least PS3 ascended at the end. So what if 360 gets everything first; we only have to wait a year or two and then we get it too. So ha!

FINALLY!!!!!! It always made me so mad that the Xbox 360 had this feature and the PS3 didn't. I heard it was an exclusive Microsoft deal for a while, I don't know if it's true but it would not surprise me. That's all Microsoft knows how to do, Exclusive BS deals that usually trickle down to the PS3 eventually. I think Microsoft is just scared of how good the PS3 really is and they have a right to be. I'm glad to see the sales and media attention finally turning toward the PS3, it well deserves it. If anything it still is the cheapest blu-ray player and not to mention the best gaming system that will only continue to get better.

From my understanding, the reason for the disc is because it uses the Flash implementation built into the Bluray specs. It makes me wonder if this will enable streaming to any bluray player on the market with BDlive functionality, not just the ps3.

@16 'What's the point when we have video store?'
What's with the negativiity? ...the point is choice mister! Sony were so slow to fulfil promises, and now that Sony are at least offering consumers more...you complain???
This is good news for US consumers who may have made the decision to go for 360 because of the extra benefit of Netflix. N. America is the biggest market, and Sony have a bigger task in that region. Sony are succeeding in the EU/Japan regions...so makes sense to support US first? Duh!
Stop whining...you have a choice to continue with PSN Video Store. As for the EU, we will get there soon. Our Video Store comes this November.
Here's to the continued success of my favourite console PS3. I'm no a fanboy, I simply choose Sony as my platform choice....again, my choice. Toodles!
